We live on Sydney's upper North Shore, a happy home for funnel webs. They like the leaf mould from all the trees around as it hides them and lets them catch their prey. We catch a couple each season and take them to Hornsby Hospital. Their collected from there and taken to a laboratory just off the expressway. They're milked for their venom which somehow become the anti--venene. My memory is that there have been no deaths since the anti-venene was devised

Absolutely correct @doubledee9675. Since the antivenom has been put to use in the early 1980's there hasn't been a single recored death due to a funnel-web bite here. Thank you so much for doing your part in keeping Australians safe by contributing to the program! 🕷️

@@untamedwildlifeTV Thanks for your kind comment. I can't stress too much that people should not try to catch a spider unless they are wearing safe clothing and know what they're doing. My father taught me and in turn I've taught our children.

Yes very very very painful multiple bites. I know that from unlucky experience. Just out of interest, that's only one of multiple encounters with our famous wildlife. I'm on medical records as the second person in SA to survive a death adder bite, I was bitten by a western brown mowing the back lawn of the farmhouse and a king brown no thicker than my finger in the vegi patch (was wearing thongs that time). All of this was in the five years I was on a property on Eyre Peninsula SA. The Browns only put me in hospital for two days, but the death adder had me in for four days with interviews from ABC, local and national tv and papers. I thought the death adder was a lizard under the leaf litter in a dry creek when I saw my dingo (Kelpie X sorry, SA) doing his cat pounce at it and thinking I was saving a lizard from the jaws of a dingo, meant Kelpie X I tried to flick it to safety with my foot. Was so fast it bit my ankle before I even saw it, then I had to get 300 metres back to the farmhouse top of the hill. Pure chance my neighbour drove up my driveway and saw me, doing the 80k trip into Cleve Hospital on dirt roads in about 15 minutes.

And a special message to tourists. You're very, very unlikely to be at risk. The Opera House, Bondi Beach, Manly Beach, the Botanical Gardens, are not the sort of territory where dangerous spiders or snakes are. You are at some risk when walking along bush paths in the Blue Mountains, but the sheer number of people using the paths around Katoomba and Leura daily would deter them. More risk in the paths at Jenolan Caves, but again the numbers of tourists would make them pretty safe. You would be at much more risk if you go charging off into heavy bushland, but tourists are unlikely to be there - most tourist buses take people to popular and safe lookouts from which you would be looking into areas where snakes are, several hundred feet below you.

Honestly, the spiders of the only reason that I'm too scared to ever visit Australia😅 Everything else I can deal with, it's just the spiders I can't😖

It’s not like they’re some sort of constant menace. Massive majority of spiders you’ll see in Australia are harmless. Australian spiders don’t really stand out that much in any regard.

@@BugsandBiology And the dangerous snakes and spiders aren't exactly running around in the places where tourists are likely to venture. The Opera House has many attractions, but not for these spiders, let alone snakes. They want bushland.

"I don't want these girls to grow up scared of these spiders, but to have a healthy respect for them." Proceeds to tell them how vicious and deadly these spiders are, and how they are always ready to bite with those massive fangs. 😰
