Catching Sheepshead Fishing With Shrimp Rigging Tips
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
I'm no expert at catching sheepshead, but I included some really good fishing tips that will help you when fishing for them with shrimp. I figured out a way of rigging for sheepshead that works great! I also share a few other things that might help you catch these stripped fish known as convicts.
I've always wondered how to catch these stripped fish. My trial and error for getting the right set up for hooking up with these fish produced great results. I started out freelining shrimp because the tide was almost slack. That method produced a couple of nice keepers. I then crimped on a couple of small split shots as the current started moving and had good results with that rig as well. The best set up I discovered was fishing with what is know as the knocker rig.
Here are a few tips that will help you catch sheepshead:
1. Use a number one size short shank hook, not a one ought, but the smaller #1 hook. The Owner brand is by far the sharpest hook I've ever used, choose that one if you can.
2. Match the sinker size to how swift the current is. I was using 1/4 to 1/2 once weights in this video. It's best if the bait moves along the bottom a little bit when fishing in rocks like I was.
3. The small to medium sized live shrimp seem to work best. If you have a really large one, break it in half or thirds depending upon how large the shrimp is. They will devour the pieces if the shrimp is freshly broken while alive.
4. If you are fishing in the rocks like I was in this video unhook your fish over some sort of container. These stripped fish are powerful when the flop in you hands. You don't want to drop one in the rocks and lose your catch.
5. Consider fishing with straight mono because you are going to have to rig often. These fish hang out around structure, plan on getting hung up a lot and breaking off. If you use braided line with a fluorocarbon or mono leader, you're going to spend a lot of time rigging leaders. I find it's a lot faster to just use mono on the reel. I was using fifteen pound test line on the reel in this video.
Those are the best tips I can give you for catching sheepshead. I went fishing in a boat the following day and caught a pile of these stripped fish again, in a different location, using the same knocker rig. Try it! If the fish are hungry, you'll catch a bucket full of them!

@radreelingfishing, search for Silver Steenbras (mussel cracker) in South Africa. The body shape of it is so similar to the Sheepshead, but they get very big. It's a very strong fish as well. I caught a 13lb fish using a 10ft Shimano Vengeance coupled with a Daiwa Laguna 4000bi reel. I thought the rod was going to snap and that was considered a small mussel cracker.

Hey JC! Great video.....who needs a boat to go fish? Was watching your video on sheepies under the bridge and around docks. Bring a small garden shovel and scrape those barnacles of the concrete and the docks. Chums 'em up and keeps 'em around a bit longer. Thanks for all the videos!!! You are a rock star man!

Thanks for watching. Make sure you register the kayak as a canoe or kayak not a boat. I think it was about $20. Here's a page to help: www.flhsmv.gov/motor-vehicles-tags-titles/vessels/vessel-titling-registrations/
When the hot bite suddenly stops it usually means somebody with bigger teeth just showed up to the party. I learned this Speer fishing offshore about 25 years ago.

I do a little of both Mickey. Thanks for commenting. I'd say a very delicate tight line with interleaves of allowing slack for the sinker to move with the current.

Rad Reeling Fishing yeah it was and I couldn't get him on video due to the battery running low, smh. That's how it goes though. Tight lines bro
Messing around with a fabric tape measure .... well, it requires too many hands and takes too much time. Let me suggest that you take a paint marker and mark 10" and 12" and 21" increments onto your fishing rod .... Then all you have to do is pass the fish by the marks on your rod to determine their legality. 10" for Mangrove Snappers; 12" for Sheepshead ... etc. I think it might make your life a bit easier and keep you from having to bring one more tool fishing.
When measuring the fish, I don’t think you’re supposed to follow the contour of the fish. That can give you an accurate measurement. Great video though.
If you have to measure it, it's too small ! A big sheep head is 18-20" +
@RadReelingFishing
5 жыл бұрын
I love this comment, ha ha...yeah, that area get's fished really hard when the sheepshead are running. Not too many big boys dodge the coolers therefore measuring is necessary if you want to take a few home.
