Catching GIANT Fish in a FLOODED Creek

Спорт

With the river blown out, I fished Chickamauga Creek with my buddy Phil. I was able to cast net about two dozen threadfin shad, which we used as bait. Our hunch was to catch catfish, but the freshwater drum would not keep off our baits. They were fun to catch, especially the big ones. Don't ever underestimate the potential of a creek...you just never know what could be at the end of your line.
When: March 9, 2018
Where: Chickamauga Creek (Chattanooga, TN)
Time: 10:30am - 12:30pm
Conditions: Breezy, moderate current
Bait: Threadfin shad
Tackle: Gander Mountain "Competitor" medium action spinning rod spooled with 10 lb monofiliament line and a Shakespeare 7'0 medium heavy Wild Cat rod with a Daiwa spinning reel spooled with 20 lb monofilament line carolina rigged with a 20 lb monofilament leader line
Method: Fishing from a dock

It's so fun to see young people appreciating every fish they catch. As an old timer, most of my buddies will kill every drum they catch for no good reason other than "wasting" time they could be catching walleye. I've always found drum to be fun to catch, especially one GIANT I caught on a fly rod, and if the water is relatively clear and less than about 60 degrees they are actually good to eat. Cheers!

I got tricked into trying it the first time by a buddy who told me they were white bass. We soak the fillets in milk with a pinch of salt for about an hour and then deep fry them and they are better than white bass if not quite up to the standards of walleye or perch.

Looks like they were having fun, which is what's important. Personally, I don't throw drum back. You'll never get rid of them but at least throwing them up on the bank gives the raccoons and other critters a few meals. They're eating tons of the bass/crappy fingerlings that you'd rather have grow.

My grandpa caught a 70 lb flathead out of a Creek in Kansas. by Creek I mean you can jump over it at some spots. He caught it in a hole that was about the size of a standard backyard in ground pool. Apparently that Creek and its many hidden pockets produced a lot of 40+ lb cats.
