Catching Fluke and Porgies in the Sound then mugged by a party boat in the fog

Late May means it's time to start transitioning from fishing the Northshore bays to fishing the Long Island Sound (Western region). Very foggy conditions contributed to a less than ideal encounter with the Super Current party boat out of Island City, NY. This is the second time a party boat has anchored on top of me but this time it just felt way more brazen. Oh well, not much I could do, just thankful I didn't get hit, and I tried not to let it ruin a somewhat productive spring morning of fishing for fluke (summer flounder) and porgies.

Pete, he has a history of doing that, driving small boats off spots. Same thing with the Riptide. And my boat isn’t that small. Can’t tell you how many times in the Marshall Fields area he has done that to me and others over the years. Once I was anchored off Lloyd Point and he came right at me and leaned on his horn. I got on the radio and told him I wasn’t lifting anchor knowing the CG was monitoring the channel. He backed down but still got right on my stern and ruined the bite. At least the JJ out of Huntington respects other boats; that City Island fleet acts like they own the Sound IMO.

They act like they own the Sound yet theyr practically in the East River, cracks me up. Interesting to hear you had similar experiences with them. Its a lack of respect, I agree, the boats that are closer to these spots like the huntington boat you mention at least respect others. Gotta try the radio thing next time...

So this dude is known to harass other boaters and no one has informed the police, coat guard, sheriff, whomever? He is doing it deliberately. Looks like he has more fun harassing others than doing anything else. His license needs to be revoked especially if he has a charter which he should.

We were blackfishing on my buddies boat and catching fish and the Riptide comes over and drops his anchor literally 3 feet off our bow! I'm not exaggerating either. I could see him in the wheelhouse and I'm staring right at him in total disbelief! He wouldn't even look at us. What a loser... if you can't catch fish just find something else to do.

pretty sure in NY state all that is required on a kayak you dont have a motor on is: a life jacket (pfd) and a whistle, flares or a light also in fog or at night. There are much more things though I would reccommend for safety and just to make the day more enjoyable. I can think of a video to do something like this, thanks for the idea. here's a link to the nydec website for the requirements in the meantime: parks.ny.gov/boating/non-motorized-boats.aspx

Got a few videos on my site catching them fly fishing off a volcanic rock reef covered in mangroves or sometimes off sand bank channels in the estuary. @@PeterRanieriII I am quite sure they do, especially when the catching on the boat is slow. Their job is to tighten the lines, they will go to where fish are caught if they aren't at their usual spots. It doesn't matter if it is fluke or stripers, mugging will happen if you are catching and they aren't. But with the fog that day I don't think they were watching you, might have seen you on the radar though and decided to investigate. I'll play devils advocate in this instance. *This isn't intended to be a nasty post at all. I'm strictly speaking about the instance in the video:* 1. I get you have every single right to go fish whenever you want. A kayak in the fog isn't the greatest idea at all, you're counting on other peoples radar to save you essentially. 2. You are recreational fishing, they are a business. They are trying to make a living and want to put people on fish. Maybe he was there the day before and read em good, that would be the first spot I'd go to as well. 3. I've seen plenty of times when fishing structure that 15-20-30 feet can make a difference. Just because you're not reading fish where you are, doesn't mean he isn't. 4. Just like it isn't "his" spot, it's not "yours" either. Do I fully agree with the party boat? No, not at all. But there's still that side to consider. Happy that you were safe.

The boat coming up to you at speed was not their fault. From what I could see you have no lights on you kayak, which I believe for the conditions are required. Where was your air horn or whistle or other noise making device. What about a handheld VHF to hail that ship. You should keep that in your life vest because if you go over it should be easily at hand and not somewhere in the kayak where you have to go looking for it in an emergency. So in that respect that boat may have never even seen you. That aside the capt was an asshat for setting on top of you and who wants to listen to someone else's blasting music like that? Shame on the capt for having poor judgment and taste and for allowing it all to happen.

@@PeterRanieriII It was fine for decades, had maybe 1 time in 20+ years that someone stole something. But then in the past 10-15 years it became a monthly thing, they'd bust into the cuddy cabin and take everything, life jackets, fire extinguisher, anchor, etc. Plus the traffic on the Hutch Pkwy, I couldn't deal, so I sold the boat and just fish freshwater and surf cast now.

It's a party boat you goof. And its not your spot. The ocean belongs to all.

Your right and I didn't mean to say it like its "my spot" you can't fish here...the ocean is everyone's playground I completely agree, so let's be respectful of the playground we share with others
