Just a small detail I love is that the girl sacrificed herself for Peeta because she knew that he had to stay alive if they wanted Katniss to work with them. Shows how everybody already knew how important Peeta was to Katniss even before she did

I hate the fact that they have Peeta say “I never even knew her name” because so much of the book was spent on district 12 team doing research into the past victors, and actually spending time with them and trying to build alliances during training. Katniss doesn’t remember her name, but Peeta would have. It was his idea to watch the past quarter quells to try and get an idea of what they’d be facing. The scene with Peeta and the D6 morphling in the book is so much sadder, because he had actually spent time with her. The flower on his face?! 😭”thank you. That looks beautiful”

The quarter quell is actually like an event to celebrate every 25 years of the hunger games. Fun fact: the second quarter quell was Haymitch's game. What was different about this one is that they doubled the number of tributes, so instead of 24 tributes, there where 48 tributes.

@@sentosaco They are pretty good. Most people often don’t read them because it is a YA novel, but I don’t know. I read them years ago when I was younger, but they are very close to my heart so I think I am kind of biased when I say that everyone should read the books. The movie is fairly accurate, but there are small parts that they leave out. For example, in the first book Peeta actually loses one leg because one of the “dogs” injured him pretty badly.

If you read the books you’ll find some explanations for little things. Like Haymitch sleeps with a knife and waking him results in him swinging around dangerously, so that’s why Katniss wakes him rudely, she rather get it done quickly so they avoid anyone getting cut.

“Most of the victors are good-looking”. Well, the games are also a popularity contest. Being good-looking probably increases your chances of getting sponsors and, therefore, increases your chances of surviving.

I thought the same thing when they said it. In the first movie they said you need to perform to get sponsors to like you and send you stuff. The more attractive you are- more sponsors is a pretty safe bet.

That’s literally exactly it like katniss points it out in the books even, even though it’s not supposed to be a beauty contest it helps a lot of the tribute is attractive. The way the capitol treated finnick especially is enough to show what they’re like.

Didn't they also do plastic surgery on the winners? After the games, they need to patch the winners up. Most of the time with surgery, so they do some plastic surgery in one swoop too. I remember something about them trying to give Katniss a boob job in the first book, wich Haymitch or Katniss herself fought pretty hard against.

1:17:22 she’s not mad at him that he failed to get peeta out, she’s mad that he created an elaborate plan to save katniss but didn’t include peeta in it in the first place. in the books, haymitch focused on her for sponsors in her first games and didnt get any sponsors for peeta, so she told him to do the opposite in the quarter quell. finding out that the entire game was a way to save her from the capitol made her feel like haymitch didn’t even try to prioritize peeta like he said we would

People who give Katniss shit for being emotional and panicky also forget that Katniss is a 17 yr old with PTSD. Why do some ppl expect her to react calmly or stop to really evaluate the situation?

I will forever be annoyed that the movies never included peeta's leg being amputated after the first games (I think he had a prosthetic in the rest of the books), cause that literally explains why he couldn't keep up like the others

That explains so much. Never read the books, but even when I was young I wondered why he was essentially just deadweight. But him missing a leg makes it much more reasonable and forgiving in my eyes. Not that anyone is a deadweight on purpose, but Peeta in the movies did very little for the group compared to the others(I thought at least).

@@kunilsen2519 they really messed up Peeta in a way because he definitely wasn’t deadweight at all. Katniss is even annoyed often because Peeta has saved her life and helped her so many times that she knows she can’t repay him, and in fact she makes things worse for him often after him helping her and she starts to feel guilty. The movies don’t show this at all. The reason katniss wants to save Peeta and for him to live in this movie is because she knows she owes it to him to give the same back. Plus I’m confused how even though the movies messed up his character, katniss was the one who was slow and got caught in the smoke and Peeta goes back to help her which makes the smoke burn his body up the most, so it was actually katniss that slowed him down which got him injured until he could barely walk so I’m confused how people act like it was Peeta who was deadweight for no reason even in the movies.

I never got to read Catching Fire but have heard plenty of the info and contexts that were left out. So it’s also really interesting that during the train scene in 9:06 Peeta said “if you can stop looking at me like I’m wounded”. Did he every say something like that in the books or was this from the movie script and did he mean that literally? Because when he said that while I was rewatching and when I learned about his amputated leg context in the books I was thinking “well yeah, you kinda are”

Fun fact (which I always loved when I was younger, as I was obsessed with this trilogy): Effie wants the 4 of them to feel like a TEAM, and actually the letters of the word "team" are the capital letters of their surnames (T = Trinket, for Effie Trinket, E = Everdeen, for Katniss Everdeen, A = Abernathy, for Haymitch Abernathy, and M = Mellark, for Peeta Mellark)

Been reading this series for ages and I love this little detail; I never noticed it before. My favorite revelation that I had about three or four reads in is at the end of the first book, when Cinna is trying to make Katniss look young and girlish for the final interview, it is only partly because of fear of her being viewed as a revolutionary- the other part is because he doesn’t want her to become a sex icon like Finnick did.

Re Katniss's fake pregnancy - I don't know if they address this in the book, but I think it's an interesting social commentary (intentional or not) that the Capitol people are upset at Katniss entering into the Hunger Games with an embryo/in the early stages of pregnancy, but totally up for children fighting each other to the death every year.

They address it in the book, she lied she loss the baby to the people in the bunker of a building in district 8 who are wounded before later blowed up by President Snow but it was later televised to all district by district 13. I read the book more than once it was interesting than the movie.

They collect the bodies of the fallen tributes to prevent cannibalism. They only had one tribute in the 66th hunger games (Titus from District 6) go savage and try to eat the bodies.

One of my favorite themes in the Hunger Games series is how fashion is used as a form of political protest: the wedding dress burning, the mockingjay dress, the hair braids, etc. Best line for me is when Katniss is in her wedding dress and Effie tells her "Let's go show them what real beauty looks like." So good *chefs kiss*

just gotta say Suzanne Collins is actually a genius for having the capital be incredibly concerned about Katniss’s fake unborn baby far more than the lives of actual children dying every year. like these books/films are much more radical than people give them credit for

​@@oncerand_directionernot at all the same. Women CHOOSE to have sex and choose to not use protection 99% of the time when they have abortions. The tributes have zero choice to get picked and the Capitol justifies the violence by propaganda of not losing their human rights (the things that are actually privileges) and showcasing violence against peacekeepers as proof that we shouldn't care about these people. Not dissimilar from 'well blacks are killing each other so who cares. Or men are doing that to themselves women are all dying from men we shouldn't care about them.' That exists today.

I will say this: as far as the books go, Suzanne Collins did her fucking homework. She drew inspiration from real history and politics, but also put so much life and detail into her characters. If you’re debating reading them, I cannot recommend the series enough, it’s really freaking good 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻

The books were chilling in the year 2012 when I first started to read them. They're becoming more chilling every year as we start to see how this kind of dystopia could be possible in real life.

in the books, gale was caught and whipped for having a turkey (because they can't leave, and hunting is outside the fence, so it's illegal) he wasn't even fighting back, he just had a dead animal

The thing I do miss most about this trilogy is the mayor’s daughter in district 12, her and Katniss were friendly acquaintances and she was the one that pointed out that the footage of district 13 was just a loop of the same footage every year. She doesn’t survive the destruction of 12 but she was a nice intermediary that kept katniss from being out of her depth. It was also the mayors house where katniss actually saw footage of the riots. A few other things to comment on though; I do like how they set up Finnick to be this cocky bastard who knows everyone’s secrets. In reality ever since becoming a victor he’s been lauded as the most attractive and Snow routinely took payments from people for the ‘pleasure of his company’. So yes finnick does trade in secrets because that’s the only payment he got out of what Snow put him through. Joanna and Haymitch are in the same boat of ‘snow couldn’t control them so everyone they loved was killed’ which is why they’ve just forgotten how to care. Suzanne Collins writes ptsd really well for all the characters in the trilogy and I do feel like commenting on the fact that Katniss’ response to Peeta being taken by the Capitol is expected, she values his life above her own because in her eyes he is a better person than her. Katniss starts off oblivious to how Gale and Peeta feel about her respectively but after the hunger games she just shuts it out, feelings make things more complicated so for the second book it’s literally just her realizing her own feelings and blaming it on the act and assuming Peeta is just a better actor than she is. I do get irritated by the whole “Katniss turns into an ass because she’s not behaving logically” thing, PTSD by definition means that your reflexive fight or flight response is much more active, she’s running on adrenaline 80% of the time so of course she’s not behaving logically, her priorities are to protect the people she loves and reach for her own freedom, The resistance means nothing to her, at this point she’s a 17 yr old who just got made into a symbol without her consent. Fundamentally she agrees with taking down the Capitol but she’s tired and her immediate concern is not politics

Yes, the Mockingjay pin was also given to Katniss by Madge (the mayors daughter') in the first book (they changed it in the film). The Mockingjay pin was also originally owned by Maysilee, who was one of the district 12 tributes in Haymitch's games and was Madge's aunt. Having it become the symbol of rebellion 25 years later was brilliant!

it was actually 2 girls fleeing to district 13 in the book that pointed out the looped footage. katniss even mentioned them in the third book as wondering if they made it or died on the way.

@@LionWithAGun thank you 😊 I loss count how many times I read the book and listen to audio and yes it was 2 girls who made it out from district 8 and Katnis saw them in the woods of district 12. Anyway lot of things were removed from the movie.

Peeta drew Rue as a rebellious sign to the capitol because she was so young and the games were so wrong. Katniss added to it with Seneca

If I remember correctly, it wasn't so much that other people were trying to poison Snow, as that he was poisoning others to achieve his goals. and for some reason he drank the same thing he gave to others, that's why he's sick, and that's why he always has roses with him - they cover the smell.

That’s true, and also the roses are genetically modified to have a pungent smell to cover the scent of his blood in his mouth. This is something that wasn’t very well captured in the movies in the scenes where these roses were present, since the books were from Katniss’ perspective.

He drank the same thing they drank in order to lure them into a false sense of security, it's actually a pretty commonly used tactic in real life. In a lot of ancient cultures, the chef for a royal would be ordered to take the first bite of the food they made for the royal to prove it wasn't poisoned. Snow drinking the wine and not dying on the spot would make the person he's poisoning think it's safe.

he drank the same thing so that the others would think it wasn't poisoned, basically he would drink it as a way of saying: see? it's not poison bc I drank it too and no one is crazy enough to poison themselves right?

The sad part for me is how Mags and Finnick not only have the mentor-tribute/mom-son relationship, but how she had the "I'm old anyway" moment to save Annie. Annie and Finnick are in love, but because Finnick is the capitals boy toy and Annie was left severely traumatized and f'ed up by the games they could never go public. Mags did them both a favor by sparing Annie for her and for Finnick. Because of Annie's state, there is no way she would've won.

So another small detail from the book: Katniss' initial gut reaction to kill Finnick when he does the mouth-to-mouth on Peeta? She's actually never even seen or heard of CPR before. She's completely baffled by it for a split second, and only then connects the dots that it's a resuscitation effort and someone from District 4 (the fishing district) would be well-versed in something like that. Really no other districts are exposed to water the way District 4 is, if I remember correctly.

Also! The quarter quell arenas are always waaaayyyy worse than the regular arenas (as if it could get any worse). The one from the second quarter quell was described as a gorgeous nature scene, with the cornucopia sitting in a vast meadow with mountains to one side and a forest to the other. It was massive though, and even worse everything in there could kill you. The butterflies had a lethal sting, the flowers smell could kill you if you inhaled it directly. One tribute died from cute fluffy squirrels eating her alive and another died when she was attacked by these beautiful pink birds with razor sharp beaks. Even the forest animals the tributes could catch to eat were poisonous and the so was the stream water. The only way to get proper food and water was to risk going to the cornucopia.

Yep and the girl who got killed by the pink birds was the original owner of the mockingjay pin. There were also double the amount of tributes. Quarter Quells are crazy.

@@NEWBOTANICA The pin was a tribute token, I think their usually made so they're small enough to be kept on the tribute. In Maysilee's case, hers was literally a pin and was probably just stuck on her corpse when they shipped her body back to District 12.

Actually, no. A Quarter Quell isn’t an all star season. It’s that every 25yrs, they have something special to remind ppl to keep them into place. The first QQ (25th Hunger Games), the districts had to vote for who to send “to remind the rebels that they were the ones to blame for the Hunger Games”. The second QQ (50th HG), each districts sent 4 tributes (two girls and two boys) “to remind the districts that twice as many rebels died than ppl from the Capitol in the war”. Hamitch was the winner of that HG. He outsmarted the Gamemakers so they punished him by killing his family and then every year, he had to watch kids die when he was trying to help them so that just drove him into alcoholism. So the third QQ (75th HG) was the Capitol wanting to kill Katniss. In the books, at every QQ, they open a box that contains an envoloppe with a twist written on the paper inside. It’s up to interpretation if in the third QQ, they switched the box and made sure it was to use old victors. In a deleted scene of Catching Fire, they filmed that it was indeed a switch to make sure that it was that twist. Honestly the layers of that trilogy is so *chef kiss* and Catching Fire is regarded as the best movie of them all.

The way they leave out in the movies that Finnick was essentially sex trafficked by the capital when he was a new victor always sat weird with me. He mentions it in passing but I shows how genuinely fucked the capital to the victors even before this.

Especially since he says it in the next movie so they could’ve picked it up themselves, he says if the same way he does in the books it’s just there’s action scenes mixed in so some people just don’t listen to what Finnick is saying.

@@clover2739 Exactly. And for those who miss what he says, that's on them. People have forgotten how to pay attention to more than what is easily noticeable. People have forgotten how to listen. I love the way it was presented. Having events overlap the way they did made the scene work so well. The Hunger Games films are rewatchable many times over. I've seen them all multiple times and still notice new to me subtle details. The attention the set designers and writers and costume designers and directors put into this series is incredible. One of my favourites is the three black nails that Peeta is sporting in the Capitol, right under President Snow's ever watchful eye. Even after seeing people get dragged off and killed for the three finger salute, Peeta does that? And the only glimpse we, the audience, get of it is when his left hand briefly moves in front of the camera. And another is in Mockingjay part 1 where Effie saw Plutarch quietly follow along with President Coin's speech to District 13, the same way Effie in the first film quietly followed along with President Snow's speech during the video shown to the Districts every year. It was basically a mirror scene foreshadowing Coin being as bad as Snow.

Of all the lines in this movie that are amazing, the killer for me is "you never get off this train". you just feel the claustrophobia and suffocation of that, because it really is never ending.

I wish they had explained the Morphlings more. Peeta bonds with them during training and I remember being really touched when she sacrificed herself in the book.

I’m still quite bummed that we didn’t learn much about the Quarter Quell in the movie, especially the 2nd Quarter Quell where Haymitch won, but I completely understand as it would take up too much time. It’s just… the way it was described in the books was so great. And also Mags’ death/sacrifice made me cry in the books. It was much more heartfelt and sad how she had to sacrifice herself :(

Yeah but since they omitted the Madge character altogether, they couldnt very well tell the story of Haymitch's Games, considering it was her mother's sister in the arena with him. Huge disappointment to me since it's an important part in the story of how people are affected long term by losing someone in the games. Madge's mom lost a sister to the games and as a result she has migraines and nightmares, Madge grew up and gave Katniss the mockingjay pin which started it all. The mockingjay pin was a family heirloom once owned by her aunt who had died in the games.

Efie is so underrated. She cared for them from day one. The issue was that she was never a powerful person and she has been playing her part in the Capital's game for years. She did what she knew how to do best and trying to "promote" tributes from the least favourite district of the twisted, blood thirsty viewers was not an easy job. Furthermore it was way easier to worry about tables and hair and appearances, since those were the constants in her life.

If you think about in that way is is definitely her coping mechanism. Everyone is owned by the government and these games. I wish they showed what the did to Flavius Octavia and the other stylists in the movie.

@@QuestionableLifeChoices plus her style was all she had to keep her strong. she was raised in a twisted society and I think that inside she knew that it was far from perfect and glamorous. she is so obsessed with clothes and material things not only because she was raised like that but because for so long it was all she had to care about, so it became obsession. it is not desrespect on Katniss or Peta and their value as humans, but she had a one-track mind for many years.

@@exarakiit was the moment that Snow made Katniss go back in the arena she realised just how unfair it was. The victors were humanised by their status, and Effie got to know Katniss and Peeta and knew that they deserved to have a great life. Throwing them back in the arena was a wake up to the whole of the capitol that what they were doing was wrong, and the capitol weren’t as benevolent and generous as they had been manipulated to believe.

40:00 Meg had a stroke that limited her speaking and cognitive abilities. She is one of the few oldest tributes still alive and kicking. 41:50 A really nice detail - Plutarch tells Katniss during the ball that Seneka stopped breathing. Which she obviously interpreted as this. It's an obvious connection especially as no one really knew how he died. 43:50 Wait I remember them censoring her mouth and words for the movie release - I thought that was specifically done to imitate the TV like style... I guess that wasn't a choice. 1:03:35 Fun fact - Blight's death actually saved them all as the cannon woke Katniss up, before fog started descending. Also it also fits with the timeline as the clock trap activated blood rain - then battle gas fog - then the deadly monke and we can see them actually descend from two slices from them. Kinda wish we saw more of Blight, cause he was kinda hot dude... Just saying. 1:09:45 If the games actually continued normally, I feel like they wouldn't survive - both Katniss and Peeta would die together, sacrificing themselves for Finnick, as he is the last one who actually had someone outside the arena. Katniss' family had Haymitch, Gale and money from her win. Peeta's family were already doing ok as bakers and had other kids and Annie needed Finnick. 1:15:10 In books Katniss didn't have this much luck. She got burned a lot during this, having permanent damage afterwards. Kinda like Peeta literally didn't have a leg after first movie.

i would have to kindly disagree w/u on your take that both Katniss and Peeta would die if the games due to sacrificing themselves for Finnick. Reason why i say this is bc in the book Katniss made it her mission to make sure that Peeta won(which obviously failed but), knowing that it’ll result in her death; She was even willing to have Haymitch enter the games w/her to ensure Peeta lives. With that being said I just can’t imagine that Katniss would sacrifice herself for Finnick.

@@nial1081 but Peeta would sacrifice himself for Finnick, and Katniss would likely ultimately follow behind Peeta. That or Katniss would sacrifice herself and then Peeta would voluntarily die after. Peeta would sacrifice himself to keep others alive period.

@1:17:15 By this point Katniss has deep feelings for Peeta (even if she herself doesn’t even realize it), so of course she was hysterical that the Capital kidnapped him. She’s thinking that he’s being tortured (which she would be correct about). Also Haymitch DID promise her that he would put Peeta’s life over hers. She has every right to feel betrayed and pissed off about it.

The quarter quell is like a special version of the games every 25 years. These games are the first where they reap from the existing pool of Victor's. the last quarter quell which was Haymich's games they actually doubled the amount of tributes. I don't think they explained it very well in the movies but it was flushed out pretty well in the books how the quarter quell works.

There was supposed to be a different Quarter Quell reaping. They changed it just to get Katniss killed, even though it violated the treaty with the districts. The victors are supposed to be able to live out their lives in wealth and SAFETY!

In theory the quarter quell reaping was of the entire pool right? Which means technically there could be at least 74 victors - the reaping wasn't just for the last 25 years

@@realSimoneCherie Yeah, I haven't read the books in a really long time but I know that they reaped from the entire pool of Victors for each district. So in theory, if all of the Victors were still alive by that point there would be 75 victors to reap from (because there were two Victors in the 74th hunger games). Most of those victors would be from districts 2 and 3 since they are the career districts. Snow was pretty much guaranteed Katniss would be in the games tho since she is the only female Victor from 12.

Another thing about the Quater Quell was that ALL of the changes for each year was written when the first ever games happed. So they’re all predetermined. As was mentioned, the game makers cheated the system and changed this one so we never know what the original game was supposed to be.

The naked elevator scene made way more sense after sense after I read the book. I’m the first book Peta gets much more severely injured than in the movie. Katniss have to basically peel his pants off of him to get to the wound and she’s very obviously uncomfortable with seeing him without pants. It’s basically implied that she’s very sexually innocent. In catching fire they talk about how the tributes are often naked and being plucked and wax and cleaned in front of people for the parade and stuff. So after all that Joanna gets naked to fuck with her and she’s confused and Peta explains that people see her as innocent

Can I just take a moment to really thank you guys for making full ass 1hr and a half long videos for us? Peeta immediately went to haymitch asking for his help to prioritise katniss over him. Katniss had a tantrum first, and arrived an hour later after peeta had already gone.

Mag's death scene always makes me shed a tear in the movies. I dislike how in them though they don't go back into her backstory. She mentored to finn and annie and was like grandmother to both. After won her games basically by being a strong swimmer when the arena was flooded by the game makers and everyone else dying. She ended up being not so mentally stable. Finn fell in love with annie. So in catching fire when annie gets her named called Mags volunteers as tribute instead of her. Also in the books its implied she had a stroke and which is why she does not speak. Mags was too pure for that world =/. Also i nthe books it describes how when mags went into the fog she seemed like she was dancing when in reality it was her body's reaction to the poisonous fog...

Effie's arc is what I love the most about this series (and Haymitches too). She was so shallow at the beginning but slowly but steadily changed into a more considerate and emphathetic person.. so did Haymitch. He never stopped being a drunk (and honestly who could blame him?!) but he worked hard to try his best to help Peeta and Katniss. The hunger games series is so much about humanity and keeping/discovering your human side during extremely tough times. If we face something unfair and traumatic the best thing we can do is stick together and try to make a difference, even if it's a small one.

I am one of those irritating people that gets hella annoyed at storyline changes between books and their movies (understanding that filmmakers are limited in what can be included and how best to get the audience to understand subtle details notwithstanding), but even I feel like replacing Katniss's prep team in the sequels with Effie was masterful, and I feel plays into the story better. That being said, the idea for it was Suzanne Collins's, as she wanted Effie to be more involved. I feel like she might have realized the benefits of fleshing out Effie's character only after she had published, and saw the movies as the opportunity to make it better.

One of the thing I liked about the dialogue writing was in 48:49, the last thing Haymitch said before Katniss went to the games, he said “remember who the real enemy is”. And when Katniss was at the moment of truth, Finnick called it back to her at 1:13:12. It was a reminder to Katniss not just to remember who the real enemy is but also to subtly say to her that she can trust him because Haymitch also placed his trust on him to be an ally (Haymitch’s golden bangle from Effie in Finnick’s wrist). It was a good way to wrap up the start and end of the games and the main theme of this book

btw when Johanna knocks out Katniss near the end its to dig out the tracker from her arm! She knew the rebels were coming for Katniss (which is also why the camouflaged lady sacrificed herself)

30:31. The quarter quell is typically different according to what the game makers feel is most brutal at the time. Haymitch was the victor of the last quarter quell where twice the normal number of tributes were selected. He was the first victor for district 12 in decades and nobody had won until the 74th. This is not true for the wealthier districts, who often illegally trained prior to their games and then volunteered, like Cato did in the last games. These “careers” come from districts 1,2, and 4. The mentors from these districts don’t have to bear the burden every year as a result.

The Quell is not chosen by game makers (except the third because snow ordered it to be). When the games were created they set up hundreds of years worth of quarter quells and wrote down the twists for them all. They're kept secret until that quell year.

You know after rewatching this I really wonder why Jennifer Lawrence got so much flack for her acting in the hunger games, or at least that's what I remember. Katness actually has a personality, she's that awkward introvert with poor social skills, and I think she makes it convincing.

The audio book is free on KZread, and the narrator does a wonderful job at immersing you in the story.

I would recommend the newer versions narrated by Tatiana Maslany, since she actually puts emotion into her voice

I remember getting into this franchise and reading all the books before Catching Fire and Mockingjay (both parts) came out, and I loved Johanna so so much. It doesn't explain in the movie (due to time restrictions i guess) but her whole backstory is that she didn't want to follow what the capitol wanted and they basically killed everyone she loved (families, friends), but keeping her and only her alive, that's why she says that rant and line in the movie. Her character is one of the best in the book imo.

“The capitol loves him” they sure do, pay a lot of 💵 for his company. I would’ve loved if they had somehow managed include in to the movies that the capitol prostitutes winners. Would’ve added a whole new level of fucked up in to the supposedly amazing life all winners get after the game… Also the victor pool is way bigger than you seem to think. There have been 74 years of hunger games (this is the 75th) and sure some of the victors are probably already dead but most districts have a decent amount, 1 and 2 the most (as the “career” districts) the poorest districts have less (like 12 only having three victors ever, Haymitch being the first).

It's in the 3rd movie when Finnick is talking to the cameras as a distraction for Peetas rescue, it's subtle which is why a bunch of people miss it

@@jennafer2327 It is but the scene in the book where it is stated outright is better because Finnick was supposed to be exposing how he got those secrets as well as what those secrets were, making it a more believable distraction than in the movies.

@@jennafer2327 yeah but it’s such a throwaway line that I, even though I’ve seen the movie many many times, managed to forget about it. They move past it so fast that most people don’t even catch it never mind contemplating it’s impact on the reality the characters have lived through

Love Catching Fire & I think it's the most accurate out of all the movies but there are still things that were cut/changed that I thought were a shame to miss out on. . When Peeta gave Katniss the pearl on the beach he makes a joke about it being made from coal in reference to an earlier scene in the book where Effie, trying her best to be supportive talks about how she kept telling everyone in the Capital about how him & Katniss might have been "a bit rough around the edges but just like coal they'd been put through something tough & came out shining' which made Peeta & Katniss secretly laugh at how little people in the Capital seemed to understand how coal works . After finding out that at least two of them will have to go back into the games Peeta throws all Haymitch's booze away & forces Haymitch & Katniss to train with him to make sure that they're all in the best shape that they possibly can be . The head peace keeper of District 12 that gets replaced, gets turned into an avox (a Capital servant that has had their tongue removed) & has to serve Katniss & Peeta before they go into the arena again (Snow dose this specifically because the man was friendly with Katniss, often buying the meat she hunted even even when it wasn't very good, despite it obviously being illegal to do so) . Katniss actually thinks about writing a letter to all her loved ones on the train to help her move on from the lack of goodbye in District 12 but after realising her intention to keep Peeta alive will mean that she'll never see them again she decides she can't do it because it will just make it harder for her to let go of them . As her "talent", that all the Victor's are pushed to have after thier Games so that the Capital can always be sure to have content for future interviews, Cinna decides to get her to pretend to be a designer (he's the one that does the drawing, he just tells her what to say about them) & she's low-key jealous/insecure that Peeta has two talents (baking & panting), that he genuinely cares about (the chefs in the Capital adore him) while she obviously can't share the one thing she's good at because (now that she's not in the arena anymore) archery is deemed too "violent" of a hobby for her & hunting is illegal . Peeta dose end up showing Katniss some of he's art but she's shocked at how upsetting it is as it was all stuff he saw in the arena (he probably did it as a form of therapy) which she finds strange as she's, understandably, trying to forget her time there . Peta has some difficulties walking for the enterity of this game because not only did he get electrocuted by the force field but he's still getting used to he's prostecic leg that was amputated at the end of the first book, so he's in pretty bad shape for a while & needs more sleep then the rest of the group . The constantly open door on the train were Katniss conveniently gets her information about what's happening in the other Districts is a lot more believeable in the book as she actually sees the footage in the office of the District 12 Mayor while visiting he's home for dinner as she's lowkey friends with he's daughter (she's actually the person that gave Katniss the Mockingjay pin in the first book) but the Mayor's busy & he's wife's sick with what i can only describe as an intense 'trauma migrain' so Katniss is free to briefly wonder the house by herself . None of the tributes can swim except Katniss (her dad taught her when she was little from a lake in the woods) and Finnak + Mags (they're from the fishing district), everyone else only got by because in the book they're outfits had a belt that was a built in flotation device . In the book Gale gets wipped for being caught with meat from illegal hunting not for attacking a peace keeper . While Prim dose help treat Gale Katniss's mum doesn't become too shaky to inject him (in fact Katniss says serval times throughout the series that the only time her mum seems to actually be confident is when she's faced with injured people she can treat) . In the book Gale & Katniss actually have a huge fight about her wanting to run away & Gale storms off, leaving Katniss upset . In the book there's a whole thing were Katniss gets trapped in the woods when the electric fence surrounding District 12 suddenly gets turned on so she has to climb a tree to get back inside the District but jumping from so high up makes her twist her ankle & hurt her ribs making her conversation with the new peace keepers even worse because, hunting being illegal, she had to pretend not to be injured & come up with an excuse as to why she was back so late despite there now being a curfew . Katniss actually meets two runaways from a different District in the woods who are trying to get to District 13, explaining to her about the rebellion where they're from & the theory that some people have about District 13 having survived . The elevator scene did happen but in the book its much more about the other tributes teasing Katniss about how "pure" she is (hence the random kiss from that other tribute) especially compared to what they're used to in the Capital (i think it comes from the fact that in the first book Katniss had to litrually had to strip Peeta to bath him when he was injured but she bassically refused to look at "most of him" while she did so + to help get them out off having to live together, like the Capital exspected, Katniss's mum told the camera people as soon as she got back from the Capital that Katniss is too young to date yet) not Joanna randomly deciding to hit on Peeta . Katniss & Peeta start putting together a book of plants & herbs that can be eaten or used for medicine (Katniss describes them & Peeta draws/paints them) & she spends half that scene thinking about how long Peeta's eyelashes are lol . The Capital are able to spin the close relationship Katniss has with Gale by everyone in town pretending that they're cousin's (because obviously just a boy/girl friendship where they're not related would hinder the believerblty of the Peeta x Katniss relationship to the Capital citizens but more importantly the other Districts that President Snow desperately wants to believe in the 'love story' angle of why the two defied the Capital) which actually works pretty well because in the book Katniss says that her & Gale, along with most people in the Seam, look like they could very much be related . While on the train Katniss & Peeta watch footage of the previous games so that they can better know what they're up against (Joanne won her games by pretending to be super meek & hiding until most of the tributes were already dead before she came out swinging her axe, Finnak though obviously talented got a lot of help via very expensive gifts from sponsors because of how handsome he was) . (Still part of the previous point but i think it kind of needed it's own separate spot) Katniss & Peeta debate watching Haymitch's game but eventually end up watching it after he's gone to bed, it was a Quater Quell & that years twist was that it had twice as many tributes as usual, Katniss was shocked to see that her mum was friends with one of the girl tributes & that, that tribute was the twin sister of the current Mayor's wife, Haymitch teamed up with her for a while but they decided to spilt up when it became clear that they didn't want to have to kill eachother, Haymitch won the game by using a force field in the arena against the remaining tributes (by leading them to the force feild waiting for them to throw thier weapon at him & then ducking down so it flug back & hit them) but the game makers didn't like one of thier tools of control being used to benifit a victor (especially one from District 12) so to punish him they murderd he's entire family & he's girlfriend . This was actually stated in the first book but you asking it here reminded me that the reason why the Capital takes the tributes dead bodies away is because a few years back there was a tribute that went nuts & started eating the people he killed, which grossed out the Capital citizens, until he died in an avalanche (which Katniss believes was set up by the Capital to stop him from becoming the winner) . A subtle detail in the Capital Party scene in the movie is that if you look closely only certain fingers of Peeta's are painted which makes it so he can secretly be giving everyone there District 12's now famous, 3 fingered, funeral, salute as a sign of disrespect to the Capital

In the books it was left more ambiguous whether they changed the rules for the 75th games or it truly was written to be like this all those years ago. I liked that more but still a great movie and reaction/commentary!

For Finnick's interview, I really liked how ambiguous he was, because he serviced a lot of capital women and maybe men and he wanted their favor but it's obvious he had annie in mind

This was the second project I worked on as a background actor. I got to be a part of the reaping scene (and see Elizabeth Banks in that amazing butterfly fit in person). The tone when the cameras weren’t rolling was pretty chill. Jennifer Lawrence kept making jokes to try to make Woody Harrelson and Josh Hutcherson laugh right before they called action, but as soon as the cameras started rolling the mood was so somber. It was an awesome experience.

I think Peeta is a result of having a story that's actually written by a woman. In so many romantic stories it's the male gaze trying to define what women want. Peeta is a love interest that shows characteristics that women dream of. The respect for Katniss as a human being, the recognition of her skills and no jealousy or need to gain power over her either in their personal relationship or for the people watching, truly supportive, communicative, and emotionally intelligent. He's really such a gem. And a fantastic counter to the "women like alpha men who are mean to them" trope.

The Quarter Quell is an event that happens every 25 years where they basically throw in a curveball. In the first event, the people in the districts had to VOTE who in their district goes to the Games. In the second, DOUBLE the amount of tributes had to go (this is the one Haymitch won)

The bombing of district 12 was also not shown in the books, since the books are from Katniss perspective and she wasn't in 12 when it happened, and "asleep" so she also couldn't have cought it on TV like she did with the rebelion.

I'm glad everyone is clarifying the Quarter Quell thing, just another thing about the tributes I heard ya'll talk about, there isn't just 26 victors in the reaping pool. It's touched on briefly in the 1st movie that the careers (Districts 1,2,4) win almost every year (and if I remember correctly there's so many victors they don't all get houses like in D12 but like condos I think) so for those districts the pool was a lot bigger than in D12.

There are 75 victors (74 years but year 74 had two winners). This Quarter Quell is the 75th year, so there are a max of 75 possible candidates, but many have died, iirc. But in the outer districts like 12, where they don't "win" often, Katniss is the only possible female candidate. I love the scene when Effie takes the one piece of paper out of the bowl. This is touched upon in the books too. That they set it up to LOOK like it's random and fair but it's always rigged.

@@emilyk5168 its funny I actually started re-reading the series around the time this video came out- just got to the quarter quell part in CF- Effie sends Peeta all the games of all the living tributes and Katniss says there are 59 living victors and "each district was able to scrap together two living victors" - so we can assume most of the victors are in 1-4. I also lol'd at the reaping scene bc Effie had to dig around in the bowl for Katniss's name...really just adding insult to injury at that point

Sam, the pool of victors is bigger than 25. it is mostly district 1 and 2 in the pool, but they had a winner (male and female) in every district, but way more than 25 total. look at Mags. she won a really really long time ago. way more than 25 years you seem to think its only 25 years worth of tributes

Yeah, there were 59 victors still alive by the 75th hunger games and in the books the announcement of the quater quell adds that all victors have to be present at the reaping and can be chosen no matter their age, mental or physical state.

Okay so here's a bit from the book. Peeta's father grew up with Katness's mother. They were not that poor since they were children of merchants. Mr. Mellark wanted to marry Katniss's mom but she married an even poor boy (Katniss's) dad because he was set to have a beautiful singing voice that even the birds would be still to hear it. Mr. Mellark would buy Katniss's game to help her feed her family. He was so nice just like Peeta. The day of the reaping he also visited Katniss to say good buy as well as his soon and took Katniss cookies. He was the one to promise Katniss he would make sure her sister and mother had food. Also Katniss had a friend besides Gale named Madge. she was the Mayor's Daughter and was rich. she was the one to give Katniss her Mockingjay pin.

It's been 74 years, so 75 victors (since there were 2 from the 74th games). We don't know how many of the older victors may have died over time, but the 24 would still be roughly 1 out of every three victors. Haymitch actually won the last quarter quell, when the twist was there were twice as many tributes, so 47 people died that year.

We know the first ten are dead by now. Mags, the 11th, is still alive. The 25th I think was dead. All others could have been alive, but most of the earlier ones probably weren't.

💃 🕺 perfect end to the weekend lol

Still respect so much that Katniss & Peeta pledged to give 1/12 of their earnings to the families of Thresh and Rue. Katniss was unconscious for days during a literal fight to the death - they never would've survived without a lot of help.

Some more background on the Quarter Quells: The different ideas for the quarter quell were first written when the games began and were sealed and marked with which quell they would be used for. In theory, no one knows what they are and they are a surprise every time. So they are pretending that the twist of victors going back into the games was there from the beginning. The first Quell the districts voted on who their tributes would be. The 50th (Haymitch's year) the amount of tributes was doubled.

Honestly, I could see Sam being type-cast as the unexpectedly-wise Asian himbo, and Stef being like he described, but maybe not so bad? Like, as a pair they'd be some weed-smoking older brothers. Get a movie of their own, it'd be hilarious.

I always get a little snicker when reactors call Finnick "Aquaman" because Alan Ritchson (Gloss) *DID* play Aquaman in a couple of things, like Smallville; he still comes to my mind whenever someone says Aquaman^.^

I think Vomitoria is synonymous with Vomitorium, also a passage in the amphitheater as far as I’m aware this whole thing of Romans going to vomit after a meal is only a myth

Fun fact: Mags won the 11th hunger games, she’s likely witnessed every games there ever was. Fun fact two: Johanna correcting herself with Annie’s win “4- 5 years ago” is because Johanna herself only won 4 games ago. Annie won the year before her.

I wonder if Mags was one of the few people alive by the 75th games (before her fog death) who actually knew about Lucy Gray Baird despite the Capitol-and especially Snow's immediate actions of trying to remove her from Panem's existence, considering that Lucy won just the year before Mags

Finnick became my favorite character, I couldn’t wait to get to his time in the book after you see his character development.

@@missylang6705 I had to reread what I had read to make sure I read it right, cause it happened so anticlimactic. I threw the book, and couldn’t finish reading for a few days.

Something I wish the movies did is that during the training all the victors were helping each other, even the ones not part of the rebel plan. They were all being nice and would sit together when they were eating and joke around. Even katniss couldn’t get out of it. There was even more of a connect with all of them and you could tell they were friends and it would’ve made it even better if they showed that, because in the moved it made it seem like they were all trying to intimidate Katniss which isn’t the case. They were all being helpful and friendly towards each other. Before their individual assessments the victors were all joking about what they’d show off and they would be like ‘well I’ll just model for them’ ‘I’m going to take a nap’ just because they’re so done with everything they don’t care anymore. In the books as well Katniss didn’t see Peeta’s painting of rue but she knew he did something because they covered it up. It was his own act for rebelling and he wanted them to give him a low score so he’d have less of a chance to win than katniss but katniss did the same thing so they both got 0 as a score.

one thing i wish was pointed out more in the movies is how much effie wished to fit in with those in the capitol. her outfits are outrageous to us but still aren’t enough for the capitol. she follows the rules and presents herself so she can win over those she wants to impress. this is also probably why she’s stuck with district 12 every year. this movie/book is her kinda giving up her wishes and throwing away progress to support katniss and peeta by showing them support and being their friend.

how dare yall drop this while im at work 😭 this movie is THE quintessential standard of book adaptations and ensemble action movies for me

I love Finnick's message being that super generic "If I die, I will be thinking of you!" looking straight to the cameras so that every single sponsor he ever slept with would feel those words were for them and send him more stuff. That was playing for the crowd at pro level.

The Quarter Quell isnt always past victors. Is just a **special** game where they can do something new and different. So they could have a year where all tributes chosen are siblings. Or they could choose to do a year where its the parents or where its all girls or whatever.

Such a great follow-up. I have to remind myself that Katniss is like 16 when I see her go after Haymitch lol.

The thing that works about Effie for me is that she really has bought all the capital propaganda so hard that she legitimately doesn’t see what’s wrong until it slowly dawns on her.

In the books Finnick sobs all night when they camp after Mags dies...

Yeah I think for what he did they did a good job with finnick in the movies but they take out a lot of scenes that build his character

Theres actually a deleted scene in the film where Plutarch before seeing president snow goes into a special room that only the Game Masters can go. It's a room filled with Specific Quarter Quell instructions on how each one is to be conducted every 25 years for quite literally the next 2000 years. The scene shows Plutarch taking out the ORIGINAL 75th Quarter Quell Specifications and BURNING THEM. Making it look like he's setting up Katniss to be killed in the games but we find out later on he put the Rebellions plan in motion to get them out through the Quarter Quell new rules to Reap from the Victors and to Spare anymore new child victims.

I know you said you don't want to but I highly recommend reading the books because they give so much more background information. plus, it answers the question you had about the Peeta/Katniss/Gale love triangle thing. short answer: it was not really this dramatic in the books. they played it up a lot more in the movies for drama, which annoys me but ya know, hollywood. that being said, my favorite thing about the books is that they're told from Katniss' perspective so you get a good insight to what her character is thinking and feeling throughout. they're very well written and go into a lot of background on the history of the games and the districts. anyway, thanks for another amazing reaction and I can't wait for the next one (which happens to be my favorite!) ❤️

I hear you, but, I didn’t actually say I didn’t want to. Just that I won’t and that’s because I don’t have time. Right now I’m working 6-7 days a week and barely have time to fit in music practice and working out. Haven’t played basketball in about two months. I’d actually like to read the books, I just won’t be able to fit them in - Sam

I like the fact that Snow legit never lies to her.

I absolutely love how these guys take the movie so seriously as the effect of the consequences that katniss and peeta made in the first hunger games just hits deeper even years later. Like hearing these guys just explain their emotions through the trials and tribulations of the story unfolding really just embodies the realism of the character's response to what's going on, heavily empowering this movie even though on the surface it is just seen as a dystopian family movie. I really enjoy how these guys analyse the movie so greatly to its potential

I always thought effie’s character was the perfectly depiction of ignorance; she was never inherently a bad person. She just never took the time to understand what was happening around her; much like most of the people in the capital I assume. What made her such a great character was her willingness to change when she did learn.

The vomitorium is actually an exit in theaters, to vomit the public in and out of the building. The vomitorium, to vomit a meal to take another is actually a myth popularise by Huxley in one of his book. (sorry for my english, I'm french, and we suck in other languages haha)

Loved the reaction guys, but Steph, we definitely have tropical climates in North America hahaha. I get your point, as most of these people clearly don't come from those areas, but there are tons of tropical and humid subtropical climates across the continent. We even have rainforests in the pacific northwest (they cross the US and into Canada).

I just noticed this but Katniss had 10 minutes to do that whole Seneca Crane display. So if all victors had only 10 minutes each, that means Peeta painted that picture of Rue in only 10 minutes o_o

in the book there wasnt any description of district 12 getting wiped out either bc it was from her perspective but im pretty sure the entire book ends with "katniss, there is no district 12." i remember literally screaming in middle school bc i didnt have the next book yet

Each quarter quell has their unique reaping rules that represent different symbollic meaning. The first quarter quell (25th hunger game) had the citizens of each districts to vote on who would compete in the Hunger Games as a way of reminding the rebels that they were responsible for the Hunger Games, and it was their fault that their children died in the Games every year. The 2nd quarter quell (50th Hunger game and the year Haymitch won) had four tributes chosen from each district instead of the usual two to remind the rebels that for each Capitol citizen killed, two rebels died.

In the booke Peeta painted Rue because he wanted the game makers to feel responsible, if only for a moment.

For me, blowing up the dam wasn’t to show pain but to prove the capital isn’t untouchable

I believe I remember the books saying that the Games workers retrieve all of the bodies to prevent cannibalism, which happened in an early game, but I may be mistaken.

Love the vid guys! I highly recommend you read the books. They give some details about past games (haymitchs in particular was interesting) and other world building stuff that are really interesting. They feel more like slice of life things (though I also love the multiple perspectives we get from the movies) Edit: I got to the part about the quarter quell. They actually change the “wrinkle” in each one. There are some cool fan ideas for future ones floating on the internet. Haymitch actually competed in the last one where they had double the number of tributes.

Ok I wasnt expecting this and kinda forgot about this story, but honestly Ive been really enjoying revisiting these movies with you guys all these years later. Thanks for this guys. Cant wait for the last 2 movies.

When I was reading the books I wanted so badly to have Stanley Tuccis' character to be a secret villian all alone and confronts katniss but nah he's just a talkshow host Also notice as they walk into the party how this random guy touches katniss's shoulder. The victors are eventually used for "physical" things and I liked how Finnick was able to use that to his advantage by paying with secrets of the capital instead of riches Also also The sores in president snows mouth is actually how he became president He poisoned everyone at a dinner who was elected and swirled the elixir in his mouth to avoid suspicion which resulted in "sores that will never heal"

Effie probably shuts out some things and tries to remain positive throughout everything going on, and I find her and haymitch as a team pretty funny since they’re pretty much opposites but haymitch is just realistic is all, he’s been thru it

I haven’t watched the movie buds in a while and mostly I’ve just watched their reviews on kids movies and comedies - but I appreciate the commentary here is so thoughtful and they compare the messages from these movies to real life conflicts. It’s very well rounded and they take it very seriously. Well done lads!

I saw this with my mate one day and I laughed my ass off because the bit with the mandrills (which is actually a scary situation) she went “no not you Rafiki!” And it went from “scary mutant mandrills” to “wise old mandrill from the lion king”.

I just want to say thank you for the videos. Whenever I need a break from studying or assignments I always come to your channel bc it’s comforting. It’s clear you guys put a lot of effort into your reactions and I always enjoy your insightful perspectives.
