    @Gate City Foundation Drainage Thanks for the shout out Shawn! Great video and nice job on the curb core. A little trick is park your truck next to the curb but leave room for the core drill. Lay the drill on a thin piece of plywood (to save it from getting banged up) & put a small bottle jack between the drill and the tire. Use the jack to slowly apply pressure to the drill. So much easier and faster and your knees will thank you. When you decide to upgrade you can buy a setup already made in a jig to do the same thing. Running that pipe up the downspout was a nice trick to keep that drain opening from spilling out in high flow keeping good head pressure. Nice work!

    @@GCFD www.amazon.com/dp/B00NPIPKPY/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_Z48924KJWNZD7RXG5X4H Here is a link to a drill setup that is basically just a drill press made to mount to the surface you core. Reverse the way the drill mounts on the rack gear so the drill faces away from the mount base. You can do this by taking the rack gear stop screw off the drill mount and then turn the drill around and slide it back on the rack gear then reinstall the stop screw. That's usually what keeps the drill from going to far up the rack gear and falling off. Once this is reversed you can rest the base of the machine against your truck tire to hold it in place while applying force to the crank handle. I would put a piece of 3/4" plywood or aluminum plate between the machine base and the tire. You could also use your power buggy instead of your truck so your not out in the road as much. I've seen these machines range from $250 up to $3000 depending on what you want out of it. This one comes with an 8" coring bit but I'm sure you could find one setup with the sizes you want. For as many jobs as your doing I would go this route vs a homemade job. I've seen guys make a mount for the drill to basically give a bottle jack something to rest on then the jack against the truck tire. If I see any of these ideas I'll send them your way. Hope this helps!

    This is the same principal as turning the rack and pinion gear around on a core drilling machine. He just made a much larger frame for the drill to use. This gives you a visual of how he used the tire to counter the drilling pressure. kzread.info/dash/bejne/ioFnpKuOgJbFn84.html

    use the trencher instead of truck for the backstop or trailer if you have one. you can also use a "pipe clamp" hooked behind curb edge also(best on straight cuts). which is pretty much a jig :)

    Core drilling makes the job look very very neat . So far as fall you only need a 1% minimum grade for a French or rain water drain. You can obtain grade with a line level , string,and two steel rods, 1” per 10’ equals 1% fall. Using a line level the string must be kept very tight, this is the way we lay off foundations for houses. Always use a mechanical level, or a line level for pvc pipe because pvc will bow in the middle and give you a false reading. The small level that you use is for ridged pipe only that does not bow or give in the middle.You should always bed your pipe in to prevent bowing after backfilling. When you leave the job site make sure it is as clean or cleaner than you found it, that speaks volumes about YOU

  • @GCFD

    @GCFD

    3 жыл бұрын

    Great comment Sammy. That’s what we typically don’t install pipe at anywhere near 1%. I want much, much more fall than that for more flow. This allows for subtle changes in how the pipe lays in the trench and keeps the pipe self cleaning. I wouldn’t take on a job where it was so close that a torpedo level couldn’t be trusted.

    May not have much fall but with the minimal amount it has, plus its collective cubic reservoir capabilities, the water now has somewhere to go and will self- level to the outfall. This system literally acting like a tubular catch basin with a slight angle. Great job with the topography you had to work with!

    Your way works and the job is done. I would have put a trench drain with a galvanized grate across the sidewalk which would eliminate the thickness of any concrete above the pipe (and also serve as built-in cleanout access). I like the core, aesthetically, as a customer but not sure it's that much better that it's worth the effort. I really like the idea of form cutting the discharge end to match the curb contour.

    There is no "fall issues" because you installed the sealed pipe high enough off the ground. By installing the sealed pipe about 3 feet off of the ground, you allowed the water pressure to be high enough to over come the slope issues. Your city probably has a water tower with the water high off the ground. By having the water so high off the ground, this allows gravity to push the water over obstacles with ease. The higher the water is stored the more force it has to easily push the water over obstacles.

  • @brendamayfuller8803

    A nice solution. The only other possibility I can see would have been a channel drain across the cement to allow for a little more slope at the start, but that would have had the problem of possible back flooding in heavy rain. This seems to be the best overall solution. And the core drilling looks better. If you work out time mixing, pouring and cleaning up after concreting, you will probably come out ahead time wise.

    Curb coring looked great! Keeps the integrity and leaves a neat, inconspicuous drain. ++ Back at the downspout, if you could arrange an angled tranfer to the pipe, (instead of the 90°) [especially since they were changing the downspout] would that give the flow a little more energy to help propel to curb? Just a thought! See ya on next one!

  • @GCFD

    @GCFD

    Yes G Man a couple of 45s would have worked too. We used a long sweep 90 for the best possible preservation of flow (energy).

    Also consider, that that one downspout drains about 50% of the house and garage which has a BIG surface area (see video from home owner) - that is a lot of water for higher water capacity/volume and force to clear/clean the drain as this compensates the "no slope" pipe run. I think the gutters should be the 5" with bigger down spout for that amount of water. The 20' piping does help too as less connections. Even if it had some tree leaves the higher water volume would clean it out. Over all, I think it will function properly and keep clean, nothing to worry about, but still good to keep your "one bubble" standard.

    Like the head pressure idea. Would sealing the downspout/pvc joint work to create even greater head pressure if this solution did not work ? You are kind to help the customer out even though your criteria weren’t met. Although time consuming and a pia, the curb coring detail makes the job neat,clean and nearly invisible. 👌

  • @kencramer1697
    @kencramer16973 жыл бұрын

    I think the only long term "problem" might be a section of that pipe holding some water. However with few tress looking to get into any cracks in that PVC i think the worst thing might be a bad smell coming out of the pipe. If that does become an issue a simple backwater valve might be a solution. Easy access if it needs maintenance and should keep any smell from wafting out of the top of that pipe.

    There is more than one way to skin a cat. 1) The storm drainage could have discharged into a soakaway below the front lawn. What you have excavated appears to be relatively permeable and would therefore have been successful as well as providing a small mitigation to add excess water to the river system that is at threat from climate change. 2) You could have used an ACO drain (a slotted channel) for any length of the footpath and drive that would have provided very shallow invert depths and thus given a decent fall along the length. The outfall of this drain could go to soakaway or to the kerb (not very satisfactory as a drainage solution that I know our UK Highway Engineers would object to). The other advantage of this system would be to help drain the standing water on the paving. I have used the contained head of water on an industrial complex where the outfall connection was too small for a standard gravity system. The extra head allowed the system to surcharge. My only concerns with your installation are vermin infestation in the pipework and the cracking of the paving over the drain line.

  • @GCFD

    @GCFD

    3 жыл бұрын

    Great comment Clive! Soakaways don't work here with our high clay soils. Even drywells quickly becoming overwhelmed with rainwater. If we can send the water off the property that is ideal instead of trying to deal with it onsite. We thought about the channel drain across the sidewalk but that wouldn't produce any head pressure to keep the system clean and flowing. We went with the pipe for results over the channel. Wildlife aren't really attracted to the smooth pipe as no debris holds in there and the pipe is white inside. Even a light rain produced enough flow to repel anyone inhabiting the pipe. These are all interesting points to consider when designing a system like this. Thanks for sharing! - Shawn

    I would have used the term "slope" rather than "fall". After watching basically all of your videos I am thinking of putting underground drains in my back yard (has a very nice decline). I need to add a gutter to the side of my house. One problem is that 2 neighbors properties are slightly uphill from my back yard and water drains under their fences onto my yard. I think I would need a 25 foot long L shaper French drain.

    I would suggest that when u core the curb u aim it at a angle so the water exits at a angle towards downhill so there's no chance water rushing down the street can flow into ur pipe and it makes the transition from ur dranage system to the street flow more streamline. on that video of the 3 pipes to the curb it came out at a 90 degree and when it hit the water flowing down the street it made big rapids. coming at a angle could also help with pushing debris away from ur outfall

    This would be the perfect job for a rotating laser. You could shoot the grade at the curb and the grade at the bottom of the sidewalk, then figure your fall percentage and use the laser to grade the whole ditch, there’s no guesswork involved there. That way you could have set the whole pipe on a consistent grade, rather than having a belly in the pipe. Definitely would be worth getting the laser. Even if you only had a quarter of a percent of fall, that seems like it would be better than having a belly.
