I would like to wish everyone a wonderful fourth of July. Enjoy your freedoms where you can and God bless us all.
The 2019 swarm catching competition isn't over yet but things are at a near stand still at the moment for swarming activity. At the beginning of the season I racked up on swarms taking an early lead. Mr. Ed, AKA Jeff Horchoff, rallied and trapped a bunch mid summer. I think he has one or two actual catches of hanging swarms and the rest are swarm trap catches. I have five swarm trap catches and the rest of mine are from swarm calls similar to what you see in the video. Either way we've been counting them and he is now in the lead. One day when he gets bored with trapping I'm going to teach him how to catch swarms like a pro.
I wish I had more time and I would set out swarm traps by the dozens. I just don't have time to monitor them and that is the main reason I don't trap much. For most people who want "free bees" traps are a great option and fun. They aren't a guarantee though. It's just like fishing. You may go out on the water at the right time with the right bait and all the latest gear but come home with not a single fish. The only sure bet is to buy bees. Even if you buy bees I recommend you at least try trapping if for nothing more than the experience.
Swarm catching is the real fun though. They'll teach you a thing or two when you start catching them no matter how good you think you are. It is a good way to learn the nature of swarming bees as well. On all the beekeeping channels you see these catches that look so quick and easy. Truth be told, a lot of them take and hour or two to work the bees and have them settle on your equipment. It is definitely a fun endeavor though.

I had a big swarm hanging from the eave of my house. A bee keeper came and used a long feather and brushed them into a cardboard box. A big ball of them dropped to the ground like an apple falling from a tree. So neat to watch them.

That second swarm was so large, your standards, I'm surprised you didn't add another deep to it immediately, after all, they did almost fill that brood frame......at least one side of it. After thinking about it, you probably didn't add that second deep super because all you probably had was more of those nice moldy frames. I will give this to you though, you raise some might hardy bees, if they can survive in your bee yard, they can survive anywhere. I almost hit 41 swarms today, lucky for you they took off an hour before I showed up. God's peace brother.

I cought 1 swarm this year but with all my friends are scared of bees and cannot help me for this reason. After getting one I am thinking I will count on splits and leave the swarms to the younger ppl. I got my bees late this spring and split it 2 times this year. I run 10 frame deep boxes and found I can split in early 2 frames with 1 honey frame, now feed them both pollon patties and sugar water, and they will grow from that. So splits are my thing its easier then swarms my 2 cents after trying it cheers. I now sit at 3 hives for winter but look out next year end of Aplil I plan 4 more 5 frame nukes then split them in July again cheers and thanks for all your help

Once ceptured and homed, a tiny swarm with a strong laying-queen will soon be just as strong as a big swarm with a so-so queen. It's not about how many bees are in it at capture, but how many more bees it's going to produce.

As far as a sherpa goes, they haul all that gear up on Mt. Everest., and the dead bodies and trash down. But the word "Sherpa" originally meant "people from the East" and is pronounced "shar-wa" by the Sherpa themselves. Before mountain climbing became a popular pastime in the Himalayas, the word Sherpa simply denoted a group of people who migrated to Nepal from Eastern Tibet.
