Took the good ole Whaly boat out for a dungeness crab and fishing trip. Had to find a plce to camp first before dropping the crab pots. This camping trip was a little early in the season, so I will plan to go back out when Halibut and Salmon are running!

    Can we just take a moment and just appreciate how much effort this fisherman does in videography. We got to see a shot of him coming in on the sandy beach. Which means he already landed, set up his camera, went back out into the water so he could show us, his viewers, of him coming into the place were he planned to camp. This is pure entertainment dedication I cannot say how awesome this all is.

    Your best bet is to drop an anchor with a few feet of chain as you come in to the beach. Drop it 50 to 100 feet from the beach. Nylon is good for anchoring because it has stretch. Then use a bow line to tie to a log or branch on the beach. You can put some stretch in the anchor line to get to the beach and then ease off and tie your bow line with a bit of slack. Your boat will float on the water and not get grounded with the rise and fall of the tide. This system, if done properly on an appropriate beach will handle a significant tidal swing. I wouldn't trust that umbrella anchor in an unattended situation. Especially without chain. I've had good luck with Danforth type anchors but there are newer types some people prefer. Danforths stow well and are comparably light weight. Check out some YT videos ... sorry, couldn't help it. :-) Those buoys are illegal in WA and we can't keep females. Surprised both are OK in CA. Most people here use at least two proper buoys and plenty of line to help with the current issue. Also, you need weight in the pots to keep them from being dragged by current.

    The minute I saw that without chain I was going no no no ! I was the anchor puller on my brother in laws 36 foot sail boat and his belief was you could never have enough chain. Thank the Lord I was in my 30's and could pull that stuff up, but we never drifted with his set up. Good advice you gave Capt !

  • @dhpanko
    @dhpanko5 ай бұрын

    Hey Matts! Great video, as always. I've camped at that very spot. I often take a 15 foot aluminum boat out in that bay and have a pretty good anchoring technique. I drop a DANFORTH anchor (common man, get a good anchor. It will save your butt if you have a mechanical failure) out I then drive into the beach. Make sure the anchor is set properly - this is important given the amount of sea grass in that bay. I get another long rope and tie it to the stern or bow. I secure this line to something substantial at night (ideally a tree but another anchor works - just don't stub your tow on it at night). Keep this line slack. The hot tip is to disconnect the fuel line from your engine (not the tank) and put the motor in reverse at idle. I ghost ride the whip out off of the beach while paying out line - the engine runs out of gas in about 30 seconds. This way the boat is anchored out safely and you have it secured to a slack line on shore. This way, if your fishing departure is at low tide you can always pull in the boat as you walk up current on the beach and off you go. Keep the content coming. Love it!

Then you set the achor when you come into the beach, tie the boat on to the loop of rope and then pull it out using the other side of the loop. Then just pin the rope at the beach. There are videos on it

    so the best west coast (higher tides) dingy anchor is as follows: 50-60 feet of bungee cord tied to the anchor, hooked to a stern clip or cleat. Then a 50-60 ft bow line clipped to the bow clip with a second anchor. you drop the bungee stern anchor at about 60-75 feet off shore, gun the boat in, and have the bow line anchor ready to jump off and set. After you unload, let the bungee pull the boat off shore so the waves dont work it. When you are ready to leave you can pull the bow line into shore with the bungees slack. best rig ever.

    Great post! I have found long soaks ,the big crabs open the door and escape, Bastards! In my case I pulled trap but had no bucket to put two keepers in . So I dropped trap for another half hour. Pulled trap keepers were gone!!! Cheers!
