Catatonia Symptoms
Catatonia is a group of symptoms that involve profound changes in activity and responsiveness.
Many people believe that catatonia is a manifestation of schizophrenia. However, most cases of catatonia are manifestations of mood disturbance within bipolar disorder.
Catatonia can develop during the course of several different types of psychiatric illness. And symptoms of catatonia can also develop from medical conditions such as autoimmune disease, cancer, or Parkinson’s disease.
This lecture was given at the August 18, 2020 meeting of the SZconsult learning community.
SZconsult is a free consultation + education service offered by Northeast Ohio Medical University. It’s open to any clinician who wants to learn more about schizophrenia-spectrum illness, or who wants to tap into the collective wisdom of the learning community to find answers to clinical problems.

When I had my FEP psychotic episode (related to mood disorder) I became catatonic & displayed stupor, mutism & posturing. Interesting stuff.

my daughter has been going through this for 4+ years now. No speaking, eating, pooping sleeping for 15 days at a time. This happens about 7 or 8 times a year so that is roughly 90 to 105 days in this state. She does not remember anything.

I have not read or seen anything stating that those diagnosed with Catatonia schizophrenia has issues with their gate/walking and balance. However, I have a client that is diagnosed with catatonic schizophrenia but I don’t see any of the signs. Maybe it’s because he’s on the lorazepam three times a day, getting 6 mg a day. However, this high dosage is making him very tired and sleepy. He doesn’t want to do anything because he’s always tired. He does have a very slow walk and balance issues.

In 1960’s in a big Psych Hospital Rotation for Nursing School there was a woman sitting in the most uncomfortable looking, odd and strange posture on top of a table. She did not move it was like she was frozen in place. Why the staff allowed her to be on top of a table I don’t know.

Can ketamine, MK 801, or Esketamine cause this, or other glutamate antagonist?

According to Max Fink and Edward Shorter, neuroleptic malignant syndrome is a type of catatonia. Also withdrawal from neuroleptics, lithium, and benzodiazepines can cause NMS/catatonia.

More people need to WAKE up to how actively we are engaged with the law of attraction; we should have it working in our favor while we can.
