As a Cat diesel fitter i used to get called in to a mine to do a top tune on any 793 that had a overspeed event. The contractor had installed a indicator liight that showed a overspeed and it was taken out of operations until it was inspected and then the supervisor had the key to reset it, the operator got a boot up the arse but it was all about minimizing failures.3500 eui engines had a run also of cam failures back in the early 2000s and i changed out hundreds of cams but 3400 engines were not bad apart from throwing legs out of bed when they felt like it ! LOL

Thanks for videoing this. Had a couple of buildings and total of three 3516’s for standby AC power use. Seemed dependable, low hour use. Only considerable negative: Each drank an average minimum of 34 gallons of fuel per hour.

Most likely you mean a 3516. Unless it was really big then could be a 3616, but not at that fuel consumption rate I suppose. As far as I ever knew theres no such thing as a 3416, biggest is the 3412.

You can figure on a gallon per hour per 20 HP consumed.. You calculate the HP required and that will give an accurate fuel consumption, +/- 5%....

I'd love to have a job like that but you almost need to be a mad scientist to understand how all that stuff works together. I'm such a mechanical genius many of my projects finish with me outsmarting the engineer because I always end up with extra parts.

Will you flush out the oil cooler as well, or replace it with a new unit? Good thing you decided to tear the original engine down before installing the replacement, otherwise ypu would have carried the oil contamination over...

I have seen in the comments that it was a "Overspeed" that caused the failure. Isn't there any Rev limiter or governor on these engines? Or is it like when you miss a gear shifting and it revs? As you can tell I'm not a Diesel mechanic.

If you’re going down a decline in too high a gear you will get a overspeed, also not getting early on the retarder will also not help slow down before ground speed gets too high. Most overspeeds are down to operator error.
