You can argue the early trade with orange is a calculated risk. However, you dont get to tell red you disagree with him trading with orange, especially after you traded him 2:1 one or 2 turns before he won...

Dandy that trade at the start giving oj an early dream city and a settle in the same turn just finished the game. That trade was so much better for them than it was for you.

It’s a risky trade, no doubt about it but there’s a lot of things in hindsight here. If I knew the rolls would go the way they did and he would pull a mono first dev, then sure it’s not great but that is the nature of risk and variance in Catan. I also can’t afford to lose the 9 10 11 here since only having the 8 3 settle would be very difficult to win. Sometimes you have to take calculated risks and it might not always work as planned.

I understand the need to protect the 9-10-11 and the threat of Black with the coordinated roads on 5, but the card you need is Brick on 10 and the card Black needs is Sheep on 10, so I don't think it's as risky as you make out. I just don't think you needed to trade away the city here, especially as it gives Orange the City and Settle. It's not just the City. It's a tough call though because you didn't have a way to clear your hand otherwise. You would have ended up with 2o-2w-3s-2w minus 1 card if you were robbed, assuming Red still blocks the 5 and robs from you. So risk of holding 8 cards, which in the end wouldn't have been punished but easily could have been. In this case if you did 7 out you'd probably drop 1w-1s--2w and pop, leaving 1o-1s in hand. Not great, not terrible. Black on the other hand has a very balanced setup so can clear their hand easily and if you did 7 out then they had 2 of the 3 roads needed to access the 9-10-11. I don't see them going that far out of their way to take it though. And if Orange doesn't get the Ore then they probably still settle but don't have the City and that means relatively speaking you're slowed down, Orange is slowed down and Black isn't. So Black probably started to get targeted and maybe that incentivises them to secure a second Wheat spot. Tough call. There's a lot to this decision and you can't go through it all in just 60 seconds of thought. You'd definitely eat up your chess clock on this one!

As it gets orange onto the wood port, wheat port and brick port much faster, I think you can calculate it was a bad move

@DandyDrew - Catan, How come you didn't think about the 10-5-4 opening, point left to the 8-10-brick port? Coz the way i see it, you will have blocked anyone from the 10-8-4 & the 9-10-5 that is strong spots 😮 and you may have open sport at the 9-10? And with no other Road opening hand spots, i feel like you well not loss a race for the 8-10-brick port...

How in the world did Orange get that much ore I thought no ore = 7 point score

All that wood is worthless. It’ll end up being 4:1 The real issues were red leaving that second settle open for orange and dandy’s city for settle gamble backfiring. If orange had been weaker, they board could’ve teamed on black and neither orange nor black would’ve been that close to 10 points yet

Great question! As LaBandaRoja9 mentioned, the wood would clog my hand without a 3:1 or 2:1 port and ideally, I don’t want to give black access to the 5411 as this would be a very strong and complete setup for them. Plus doubling on both sides of the 4 allows me “own” the 4 roll by doubling my ore output. Even better that I got to road settle on the 9 wheat too.

@@LaBandaRoja95411 and point towards the open 3:1 is VERY strong for black. It gives him all 5 resources, the best OWS, coordinated roads on the 5, a guaranteed 3:1, and an unbreakable road network to connect his settles for longest road.

The two ore for brick wheat at 7:00 ended up being not worth Maybe better to save for city or dev

You cant blame it on reds trades, you traded orange the city and a 2:1 in the end for a dev which gave him the settle, its fine taking some risks but shouldnt blame it on other players then

Too much lingo... what is "popping"? Its not busting with a 7 is it? Is it buying a dev card? Using a dev card?
