    on the first "quiz" I picked that spot too. But my reasoning was that as 1st, either you take that, or you're going to play wheatless because on a low wheat board like that it's certainly not going to come back for the 8th pick. I disagree with the concept of edges of the board that are not likely to get blocked. This is only true at the very beginning of the game... as soon as someone gets the lead, they're going to be solo blocked like any other square. On the contrary, central squares that have 3 settlements from 3 different people aren't likely to get blocked simply because any of them rolling a 7 will move the robber away from there. in the last game that you showed, imo black made a mistake: he should have taken 3-11-10, simply because he can't leave you the chance to expand there, considering you already have an absolutely monster setup with all resources and 23 peeps of production.

    Another perhaps more advanced/meta defensive placement is placing in such a way that you make it more likely that your opponent will place somewhere to enter in a road race against another opponent, or to block a second opponent directly with their next placement. They will give highly advantageous trades for "that missing brick" and if you're lucky they will go all emotional on each other.

    Issue with your final example: when black sees you take the 8-4-3 and point your road up to the 10-3-1, if I'm black I'm 100% taking the 10-3-11 or the 9-10-11 to punish you and the road upward to even rush to the 4-5-11 to secure the middle of the board and block your expansions there. I think this was more a misplay by black

  • @johnnyandtheinsatiablevoid
    @johnnyandtheinsatiablevoid8 ай бұрын

    I mean I personally would go right next door to the 6/5/10 and face road to the right, since it shuts down the 6/9/10 AND the 5/8/10, granting you decent ore production while simultaneously raising the overall value of ore in p2p trades. Second settle I take the 4/11 brick port or the 3/9/11 for first turn road and wheat for first settle at 6/9/12. Admittedly this probably shuts me out of getting a 3:1 port but I like it better than having to trade for all my ore while playing an OWS game.

  • @andrewgoehring9108

    At 8:40 there is no way trade will work out long term here. As we see red got enough wood to get the the brick port and he will never trade with you again(he also has the same poor wood as black). As for black they had a(not great) wood tile, they may also decide to just wait and hope for the best working their way to the 6 wood spot given the way everyone's roads are going. I would not make that trade with blue. Even orange could get going better if they get the sheep port.

    Under each number there are some dots. Those are called pips. They represent the probability of that number being rolled, i.e., 6 and 8 (5 pips) are far more likely to be rolled than 2 or 12 (1pip). When placing the settlement, add the pips from each of the 3 hexes to come up with the total pips for that location. In the first example, note that he said the 6/9/10 was 13 pips . . . but it is not. It's only 12. The highest combination possible is 6/5/9, or 13 pips.

    If your talking about where black should go, honestly I would have taken the ore port and doubled down on the 2-1 trade + some sheep. As for his own pick ya just one spot down would block black and given him a port and the two other resources he needs. Edit: finished watching. Black is an idiot, he gets a 3:1 port then goes south to another 3:1 port with NOTHING ELSE. I guess he was too slow and red took what he wanted, but tit's still his fault for a bad starting pick. Red also dumb, why would he take the 3:1 port with the worst sheep tile when he could have gotten double clay and the clay port. He also had a chance to cut off whites longest road. If i'm reading it right 10 points was needed to win both black and green were very close to winning too.

    I found this channel when it first started out and marveled at how much strategy there could be to Catan. But I really think it's being stretched too far. There is no objective "best pick". Leading in a free-for-all game gets you nothing. I'd argue that picking a 8/6/8 gold spot is a bad decision because it means you'll get robbed all game. Furthermore, since collusion is perfectly legal, there's no such thing as "optimal play". If all of Bo's opponents agreed at the game start that they would all mutually benefit by nonstop solo-blocking Bo all game, his magic status as a good player suddenly disappears. And there's no rules against it because it is in all the player's interests of that agreement to participate in that agreement.

    0:59 "There is an objective best first position pick." I bet that Dylan has never looked in the dictionary for the definition of "objective". Here is a definition from the Cambridge Dictionary: "based on real facts and not influenced by personal beliefs or feelings". Other online dictionaries give similar definitions. What are the real facts that make the 6-9-10 better than all the alternatives? Considering that Dylan makes no attempt to assign a score to each alternative spot, I am not seeing him making *any* comparison, let alone an objective comparison. The "facts" that brings on the table are the merits of the 6-9-10 spot based on his personal experience from being both a player and a viewer of other people's games. Without comparing the merits of the 6-9-10 with the merits of the 5-10-8, how can we say that the one is better than the other? The fact that Bo Peng, who Dylan personally believes is one of the best players in the world (2:01), made a (dissimilar) decision while playing on a different board, proves nothing about the 6-9-10 being the best spot on the initial board. It's not even a fact, let alone an objective fact. It wouldn't have been an objective fact even if Bo Peng had chosen the 6-9-10 on an identical board. So, I am sorry, but I have to call BS on the whole project of proving the objectivity of the 6-9-10 in this video. For anyone not familiar with the term BS, it means "objectionable". 🙂
