CATAMARAN BUILD - Choosing Our Interior & Exterior Lighting (MJ Sailing - Ep 329)

We're back to working on our own boat and it feels so good!
In this week's episode we give a rundown of the lighting options we've chosen to go with, even if it will be a little bit before we get to install them.
While at METS in November, we ran into a friend that works for Lumishore, and after staying to look at their display, we were instantly hooked on their products. Everything they offer which we're looking to add (down lighting, rope lighting, courtesy lights, and underwater lights) are CRGBW, which means they can do both cool and warm whites, plus they can go through every spectrum of the color wheel. And not only that, but they also dim, so we can always choose the level of brightness we want inside or out.
I've put together a few diagrams showing what we thought would be a good fit on our boat, and they came back with something a little more amped up, but that will give us the most options in the long run.
On other work that's actually getting completed on the boat, Matt and I work to add in the aft steps we picked up while at the yard in Vietnam. This is going to help us so much day to day, as now we'll be able to easily step from the aft cockpit area onto the side deck. No more painful knees for us!
As always, it is a process. first is the cutting and fitting stage, and then drilling holes through the bulkhead into the aft cabin. Matt has to then backfill those holes with thickened resin, as well as sand off the gelcoat on the exterior where they'll be bonded in.
Once all of that is ready we slap some methacrylate on both the steps and the transom and get them bonded into place. A small visual change for the boat, but a big step forward (no pun intended) for the ease of us moving around now as we work each day.
We hope you enjoy!
Much love,
Jessica, Matt & Georgie

You might consider adding courtesy lights under each of those steps. It will make a huge difference when you need to climb up at night. Same for the helm steps. Maybe also consider some lights that can point up and shine on the mast to make it easier to check sails on passage

Final assembly - GREAT feeling! Nightmare having stuff kicking around waiting for another stage to be completed just so you can put pieces together - I had to buy some new fittings this week 'cause I'd "stored" the originals and Tomb Raider couldn't find them now! Great progress.

@@MJSailing Yep. You can always turn off a light or dim them if you have too much light. If you do not have enough, hard to create more light. And you do not want a situation where you have all sorts of shadows or dark spots on your boat.

Your an amazing couple. I have always has some kind of a project in my life, boats. motorcycles. RV's, side x sides and remodeling houses. All those projects had foreseeable finish the biggest being a couple of months. For the two of you to take on a job of this magnitude is amazing. Your level of craftsmanship and precision in this build are impeccable. All the best too you both in this build.

I agree it's pretty tedious. But it's the honest way that boats like this are built - we actually have lower build hours than the pros on the interior fairing. We hope to soon turn the page and start the things I've been waiting years to do... Install the mechanical items.

Nice work as usual. That bonding goo for the steps is supposed to be incredibly strong. Yes good lighting is crucial, not just for the mood but also to be able to see into nooks and crannies.

The more lighting the better. Like you say, you have to see into nooks and crannies. And if you do not have enough, then you start getting dark parts of the boat where you can not see as well. You can always turn lights off if you do not need them. Much harder to add light later on.

I like how they are building a yacht together for their future life. My advice - do not place spotlights (spotlights) mounted in the ceiling, especially in the place where you lie. Such light shines straight into the eyes and creates an unpleasant shadow. I have a whole house with these lights and I don't use them. I have uplights everywhere and I use the soft light reflected from the ceiling. Such Light does not create a sharp, tiring shadow. For example, in a bedroom that is 30 m2 (330 ft2) I have one LED lamp in the corner away from the bed with a 7W or 10W bulb that shines upwards and this is enough even for reading.

Jess- Those lights are going to make your boat the ultimate Christmas parade boat wherever you go. Can you sync the the lights to music? That would be epic! Also, since they are LEDs, they won't use much energy. I'm especially looking forward to seeing the effect from the underwater lights. Lastly, please excuse my ignorance for asking this question (I'm old). What is the music that is playing during the first segment of Matt installing the steps? I love your taste in music!

We can sync the lights to music!! We'll do a feature on that later once we have a few items in hand. If you go to Lumishore's KZread page though, they do have a video showing it. Normally I have all the songs listed in the video description, but I've been running a little behind today. Once I have my computer in front of me again, I'll check that for you. 😀

Matt, suggestion, for the deck steps? I don’t know if you did this or not but on the exposed edges, back them up with foam, round the edges and a layer of glass to soften them so you don’t catch the top of your feet if you miss the step. This is for the underside aft edges. Awesome video series too! Rock on! Also…step lights…..

Your lighting plan looks very well thought out. All of the options available now are so impressive. I have a few underwater lights, they are a pain to keep clean. I've yet to find an antifouling that really works on them. If you put underwater lights in, plan on a way to keep them clean.

Are you having lighting for the steps near the helm? I used to do a lot of landscape lighting and for any doubtful or undecided areas, I always put in spare conduits with a draw wire, just gave a cheap solution for adding later.

I think they molded the spot larger originally thinking the long side would run with the length of the boat. But after using them, we figured they were better running transversely, so need to fill in the molded slots.

You were talking about how to light your boat, I disagree with your logic, I think you should be considering how to light the people making youtube videos on your boat first and lighting the boat is just a seconary priority. I don't know about boats but I do know about photography. When you use a small source of light, you get hard light, which is good for portrates you exagerate wrinkles and you make old men look good with really weathered faces. When you photograph people with wide lights you get soft light which is good for photographing women who don't want to look old, it softens the wrinkles and makes a woman look younger with softer skin. If it was my choice based on my knowledge of photography I would just use strips of lights everywhere to make wide areas were loads of soft light is coming from. It would keep you looking young. Other people know more than me about photography, I've only done a few night school courses in photography. Why don't you consult an expert photographer instead boat light expert. Lighting you for youtube filming is far more important than lighting your boat.

That's why you go to the boat Shows to get all the free upgrades for your project. Meanwhile, everybody is watching. Is wanting to watch you build your future home, not how many freebies? Or sponsor, you can gain. Create another channel just for how to dupe sponsors into supporting your project/channel.
