CATALPA WORMS! Catfish Catch 'n Cook

Спорт

Do you say Catalpa or Catawba? Or call em something else? I fried up some Nashville hot style catfish sandwiches on the river bank, fresh caught on catalpa worms.

Rapala filet knife, first year 1967. Mine must be close to that year. It was my dads and I don't remember when he didn't have it. Leather sheath with the fish tail at the end. That one looked as sharp as a razor, as is mine.

I was told by one of my uncles that fished with them that if you know where there is a catalpa tree that doesn't have the caterpillars to take a dozen or so from another tree that does and seed the tree that's without. He would collect them during their active season and freeze them in cornmeal for the rest of the year. The cornmeal kept them from sticking together and becoming a frozen block of worms. RIP Uncle Henry.

There is a Catalpa tree just south of Burkesville KY on the bank Cumberland River where you can catch a limit of big trout with a green and black rooster tail during the Catalpa hatch. The trout hang out under the tree just waiting for the them to drop into the water. I have done it several times.

It is amazing how fast they grow...you caught one on video pooping. If you stand close to the tree that has a good infestation, it will literally sound like it is raining - caterpillar poop that is. Great bait, but a very short window to harvest them. Many freeze them, but they will live quite some time in the refrigerator.🐛 That bluff you camped across from was beautiful...gotta love nature. 👍👍

I knowed some old fellars, including my old man, used to call them "Patalka" worms, or Patalca worms, haha. And they also call a mimosa tree, a firmosa, but that's them old briar hoppers or billhillys for you. Don't matter what anybody says, most folks knows what their talking about, for the most part. We've got Catalpa trees all around here and i used to check them all every year and never saw the first worm on any of them. I don't know, maybe it was something to do with the tree or something..

Important to get your deep fry oil hot enough to sizzle when you drop batter fish in, or the filet will turn into an oil sponge. You can test it with a tiny piece of fish. Looks delicious. I score the filet skin on the fish, peel it off with pliers, then cut the filet off. Fresh fish hard to beat. Good to have the bowfishing rig at the ready, if the environment becomes target rich for carp or gar.

Remember getting those with my Grandpa and catfishing. In right now, in Missouri, the mulberries are are at their peak. And if they're dropping in the water, the catfish will be there and the carp. Also, we just had a double dose of cicadas, and the fishing has been good.

I’ve done 2 river island overnight trips where we catfish and they were both an awesome experience, although we never ate the fish on site (we did take the home). This brings me back to those trips. Catfishing is so much fun and even better if you can share with a few friends and family. They usually battle well too! Those sandwiches looked amazing

Easiest way to get the worms on branches you can't reach is to throw a stick up to hit the branch. They will come raining down. Used to do it every summer at my cousin's house. All kinds of fish like them. Thanks for the video.

Years ago when my brother ran trot lines he and a buddy would lay an old bed sheet under the tree. Then they beat the branches with 10-12 ft bamboo poles to knock the worms out onto the sheet. Easy pickup. I knew about 2 trees, one would bloom, the other didn't. Every year the one that bloomed had worms, the one that didn't never had a worm.

I’ve come across one hanging out over the water. Bluegill and small catfish hanging out under it. You’d hook a bluegill and the catfish would be trying to steal the lure out of their mouths. It’d be funny seeing them hang out of a bluegills mouth and they’d still be trying to eat everything that fell in.
