Catalina Factory Tour and Good-Bye Gulfport (e.83) | ⛵ The Foster Journey

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In the last episode we began our race against hurricane season down the west coast of Florida, and in this episode we pause in Gulfport, Florida and tour the Catalina Yachts Factory with two friends (thx, D & M!). Also, I share some technical information about our decision to buy a Catalina 387. Then we take a wet ride back to Cadence, change the oil, and say good-bye to Gulfport!
Hope you enjoy.
Cheers,
Matt

Who Are We?
We're the Fosters, and we just sold our house , purchased a sailboat, Cadence, a Catalina 387, and sailed away from land. We're on a journey to minimize our life, learn to live on a sailboat, and travel the oceans.
In 2019, Matt quit his public education career of 15 years, and went full-time building his own business. Olivia is ready to explore the world, and so am I...and now, we're on a mission to Maine!
We're sharing this journey with you in hopes that it'll bring you a smile, provide something helpful, and maybe give a bit of inspiration to live life on your terms - to explore your world.

Gulfport, that brought back memories. I used to keep my Irwin 28 there back in the late 80's. After I sold my Irwin, my next boat was going to a be a Catalina. However, before I bought the Catalina, I saw how much the kids and wife enjoyed fishing, so I ended up purchasing a center console.

very surprising how thin the hull is on that "C400" cross section. weird that it has a compresion post we have several C400's at my club and all have keel stepped masts The full depth keel sails much better than the wing version too

@@TheFosterJourney Galena is the goddess of calm and tranquil seas. But we didn't know that until after her name was chosen. My husband and I were engaged at Lake Galena, and of all the choices, Galena was the favorite.

I'm a big fan of Catalina but don't own a sail boat. I'll be taking a combo 101/103/104/106 live aboard course the end of September. I agree with your points about Catalina construction but I also just became aware of another manufacturer Sirius Yachts (Germany) that is beginning to make some inroad in the US and is already popular in the UK. They have a somewhat different design/design philosophy that results is boat that seems to address some issues that are just accepted with the more classic designs. Thought you might be interested in looking at their videos and getting your impressions. Thanks!! No reason whatsoever to take all those courses. Especially at the same time. You wont be able to grasp it all. Everything after 103/104 will be meaningless to you without experience. Sirius Yachts are nice but they are not serious cruising boats and cost almost twice as much as boats that are built like tanks such as Island Packet. A 35 foot Sirius START at $550K. You're up in new Catamaran prices. You can get a 42 foot Island Packet for less.

@@soldozer I don't think a direct comparison between Sirius and production boats (on price) is possible, more of an apples and oranges situation. The reason is that the Sirius are not production boats - at best the most accurate description is semi-custom built. They have a large number of "floor plans", but no two are really alike and most of the interior work is hand fitted/finished. My question was more on the design features unique to their concept and aversion to aft cabins. The test cruise video with the lady that has made an Atlantic crossing and has done a lot of coastal cruising around Europe (the initial market for Sirius) was good and she made what I believe is a very accurate statement. Just about any well made boat can be used to cruise, the real question is how comfortable will the you be in that boat within its inherent limitations/capabilities. I suspect that is a very subjective judgement for each individual. I would never consider a Catalina 22 for Caribbean cruising or crossing the Atlantic, yet there are those who do. I've spent many years in the GoM on work boats, ROV support vessels, fixed and floating platforms, and held several USCG ratings before I retired. I discussed with the instructor and he felt that I would be OK with the fast track combo course. I realize that the marine work environment of the GoM likely will have only minimal correspondence to being on board a sail boat. That is my primary reason for taking the longer live aboard course; like the very intense Motorcycle Safety Rider course, at the end of it there will be no doubt about the desire to sail and stay aboard.

Now that you have had your boat for a while and potentially been on other boats. Would you still base your purchase off the mention specs? If you were to purchase today, would those numbers be relevant in FW siding which boat to buy? I ask because, Cats cost more due to manufacturing in the US. More boat could be had for less when looking at it from a first time buyer. Any advise would be appreciated. Thx!

The biggest change we'd make is we wouldn't shy from a few things that scared us due to our inexperience. Things like, how to clean the interior, the condition of the running rigging or sails, the age of the engine, etc. I think the boat specs have held well to the conditions we've sailed in. And I think we've come to appreciate some lighter displacement boats (Catalina 445) as well as some older 1980s designs (Kaufman 47).
