Something for owners to keep in mind: In 1997, the AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association) came out with the strong recommendation to never use the scruff area for vaccines. No vaccine (adjuvanted or non-adjuvanted) is to be given in the scruff area under any circumstance. They are to be given as low on a limb as possible. This is to allow for limb amputation if a VAS (vaccine-associated sarcoma), although rare, occurs. Here's to happy, healthy cats!

Thank you for that!!! That is an easy way to tell weather your veterinarian is stuck in the outdated practices.

Yup my cat just got her back leg amputated from an injection site sarcoma and is going through chemo now. Unfortunately there are still vets giving vaccinations on the scruff. At least my cat has a fighting chance. This type of cancer is aggressive as heck.

Feline distemper vaccination can also cause kidney disease. I have 2 cats that developed kidney disease 2 weeks after the vaccination. Please do your research. If you have an indoor cat, it is not necessary to vaccinate it.

Certain vaccines are compulsory like rabies. If you don't vaccinate it you may catch the disease from your cat especially those feral cats that contacted with infected cats or dogs

@@countreegirl8029 So were my cats. They were always inside the house but yet they all died because of deadly viruses. It doesn't guarantee everything as we can't see germs. They could be attached on your clothes and then transferred to your cats.

My two cats are 6 years old and got rabies shots when they were spayed at age six months each. Then they got a second shot last year. They are inside outside cats. I'm going to get them a booster rabies but a little bit scared to. Is the three-year one safe and is it really necessary because I read that rabies shots last a lot longer than one year. Thank you. As I mentioned they got rabies shots last year.

i am planning on vaccinating stray cats for Rabies, fvrcp and deworming.. the only problems is that these vaccines comes in two shots (within two weeks) and then a shot as a booster after a year, i can only manage to vaccinate with one shot because i wont be able to find the cat again because it's stray.. does it work if i vaccinate them with one shot only?? i hope you understand my question.

  • @AnimalWised

Heartworms are much more common in dogs, but cats can become infected with them. In fact, it may be more common than previously believed. However, preventive medicine for heartworms comes in the form of deworming treatment and generally wouldn't be controlled by vaccination.

  • @svv3244

Don't worry about heart worm unless your dog or cat is constantly drinking swampy water with mosquitos. The heart worm medication and preventative is POISON.
