Cats are born to be supervisors. Usually dogs are greatly relieved by not having to think so much, but humans, in theory more intelligent, often enjoy being managed, too. I suspect if the human's Mom had been taking the video, we would have heard her caution the baby. She would know there is a security mesh but the baby wouldn't understand that yet. She might have let the cat act, but us viewers would know Mom would spring into action if needed. Dad may be one of those parents who thinks "Just throw him in the pool, he needs to learn how to swim some day..."

How many cat's have you owned in your life? Cats are pretty stupid animals; I have owned 16 cats in my lifetime. They rarely have concept of danger to themselves let alone a 3rd person. I know everyone thinks - and wants - the cat to be doing this out of care for the kid... but in reality the cat is just playing with the kids hands. Certain dog breeds will have the intelligence to understand the danger to the kid in this situation, but never a cat. Sorry to burst your bubble.

Jokes aside, this is genuinely fascinating to watch. The way the cat flat-out stares at the owner the first time kid gets a bit to handsy with the railing. Then, realizing the human isn’t going to do anything, hesitantly nudges the child away from the balcony even reaching out fully when the child uses the other hand, before hurriedly lurching over the edge in order to get the baby away from the ledge entirely. It’s likely the cat either witnessed the parent do this a few times or is just straight-up trained to do it. But that stare down and the initial hesitation is what makes this so interesting to me.

I'm usually not a big fan of cats, but wow how smart and protective is this cat. I always assumed they are selfish.
Loved how the cat glanced over: " um ... can you come and get your big weird kitty right meow!"

Its a male filming. This means full on entitlements and moving personal responsibility. In this case only a cat was available.

@@fingerprint5511 i get your point, sadly to many dad's suck and sadly to many societys accept it. HOWEVER, in this case: A. There's a apparently pretty solid net B. The dad is literally less than a second away, theres not a chance in hell that kid would ever fall. The kitty is a different story but with the net I don't think there was ever any danger. At least not more than comment in everyday life. C. You don't know the person, how can you judge by a minute long clip?

So was I! I was less concerned about the baby because there's no way he could climb that, and if he somehow could, it would take a while and the parent would probably realize that they actually needed to get up and help, so the baby would be fine, but the cat is already up on the ledge! One wrong move and he's over the edge! This video was sweet because of the cat being protective, but it pissed me off that the guy was just recording! I'm glad all ended well though. But it went on far too long. I'm not trying to be a downer, but it just made me nervous

Fun fact: cat adopted the child and the guy recording this is cat's home caretaker
The cat isn't just swatting the toddler's hands away, it's doing it very expressively. The first time, the cat bows its head and brings its mouth towards the child's hands, as if to kiss it, saying "please don't do that." When the child reaches again, the cat says "no" more emphathically. And the third time, it's like, "I said no!" The gestural conversation between the two of them is remarkable!

It looks very much like what a human parent would do. She's obviously observed his mom telling him off for doing something he shouldn't and mimicked it. That's remarkable !

love how he looks at the father like, " aye you wanna check out what you child's doing? " then the 2nd time around when the child wasn't letting go he could've easily unsheathed his nails and a slight swipe would've done the job but he did it without hurting or majorly scaring him. They def more intelligent then we casually think
The cat really knows! And cares
That baby didn’t even complain he just understood and walked away-

Thats the effect of enforcing healthy boundaries effectively. It works with fellow humans just as well as it works with pets and babies.
