My interpretation of the wife's character in her relation to the cat has to do with the Jazz Era decade, where women were said to be presumably free and wilder than previous generation, open minded and emancipated and they were not. Morally, they had more freedom of speech and behaviour and they were socially integrated but they still were restricted by social laws against them. I consider the cat in the story as a reflection of what she pretends to be. She wants to come back to those times of freedom and not to depend anymore on her husband who does not really care about her and any of her worries or personal feelings. She hides herself behind her needs on materialistic possessions to fill that emptiness in her soul as a wife. The cat for me represents self-being and freedom because cats generally seem to have no owners. Sometimes, they just leave and abandon all that security they have at home and that's what cat represents to me in comparison to the wife's character. The cat does not neccesarily have to be physically there but it is just an illusion she has, a reflection of what she wants to become, something which is silent and she cannot tell. She cannot break up with her husband. She has no right to divorce or to ask for it as a woman and the cat is the silent part of how she would really expect to become and that she will never be by law. She wishes she could be a cat but she cannot. The cat in the rain and rain itself means her sadness because she will never be able to be like the cat.

The villain (if there has to be one) is existence itself.

Thank you I have an exam soon ... and I have question /In Heming way's cat in the rain a big difference between the treatment of the American husband and the hotel owner to the American wife . Comment on this difference showing the effect of this treatment on the wife .

If you were in the position of the protagonist in the story of cat in the rain you have studied, would you act the way he/she does?Why?

I have Q.why hemingway use the word husband in first half of the story and then use the word George in the second half of the story?

I took the interpretation that the cat was somebody for the wife to love. The marriage was unfulfilling.

Maybe she wants to do/have things in her life as he wants the paper. Maybe he does not appreciate her or talk to her and the doorman is hotter and/or more tender, nicer, with better energy. How can she have her eye on the ball of a relationship when the husband ignores her? She is not fetishizing; she is interested in another as the husband is interested in isolation, not a relationship. Balance is key. He wants a doormat.

is his happiness internal? Y does he resort to the book then?

Образ хозяина - это образ сильного и далёкого отца, при котором можно чувствовать себя маленькой и значительной. Муж не так относится к своей жене, хотя бы потому, что он и не отец. И когда жена говорит о том, что хочет свой дом с накрытым столом, то муж отвечает фразой "заткнись". Видимо, он тоже раздражается. А когда служанка приносит кошку, то выясняется, что это другая кошка. То есть дело не в кошке, а в надвигающемся кризис е в паре. Хозяин, как отец поступил, а муж, как мужчина. И потом, как из коротких волос сделать длинные, как из гостиницы переместиться в свой дом? Ничего, завтра дождь пройдёт, выйдет солнце и всё наладится. Может быть.

great review if you just read the story, but you get much closer and less ambigious to the storyline 'answer' if you will, when you look at hemingway's real life at the time as clearly this was based on him and his spouse hadley. this was the prime of their famous romantic paris years and indeed they did have a baby in 1923, nicknamed mr bumby, and they had a cat, f. puss. also, check out photos of them at this time and notice hadley's hair. ahh but too soon hemingway had an affair starting in 1925 and left his spouse hadley for this woman pauline in 1926. so its not really solving the da vinci code here to see where this story evolved from.

There is no analysis needed. The story speaks for itself. The husband is engrossed in a book. I am sure it recounts a bit of personal experience of Papa.
