I'm very sure they had that risk in mind when they opted to use this mining technique. I'm guessing they will punch a hole through the seam a few meters apart, like board and pillar style, and then reinforce the excavated portions before mining the remaining coal. There is a mine here in OZ that is going to use this for the very first time. We will find out soon.
