Episode 29
Castlevania is one of the most successful video game franchises of all time, and it all started on the NES! It's pretty incredible how many elements that became staples of the series were introduced right here in the very first entry. The Belmonts, the whip, the sub weapons, the music, Dracula, the castle, Medusa heads - It's all here!
So how did this amazing game get made? Who were the visionaries behind it? In this week's episode we'll find out! Then we'll dive deep into the gameplay, where we'll learn:
* Secret SHORTCUTS to get you through difficult levels fast!
* What EVERY item and sub weapon does - Check the sidebars for extra info!
* How to find every HIDDEN SECRET!
* Where to find EVERY hidden WALL MEAT!
* How to get tons of points to gain EXTRA LIVES!
* Crazy GLITCHES that you have to see to believe!
* How to defeat EVERY BOSS including COUNT DRACULA himself... AND MORE!
SPECIAL THIS EPISODE A cameo from KARMAJOLT!
Karmajolt has an awesome retro gaming channel that I personally like to watch when I'm not making U Can Beat Video Games! My favorite part of his channel are his short videos where he explains a secret or a glitch in 60 seconds or less - There are so many tricks that I didn't know! He does a lot more than just that on the channel, including live streams!
Check it out: / karmajolt

Holy Water is the worst in the levels themselves, because it doesn't do anything to deal with the most annoying regular enemies. However, it completely and utterly trivializes bosses and stunlocks them, and the bosses are honestly the real hard part of CV.

When I was young, my brother and I saved up for a NES when they came out. The Toys R' Us in our area only carried the version with the Strategy Guide instead of Super Mario Bros. So ... we had to save up more to buy a game to play on it. Castlevania was the first NES game we purchased. Something that happened once to us that we were not able to replicate was playing on stage 11 with the birds and hunchbacks. We jumped up in the air near one of the broken columns and got hit by an enemy, causing us to fall into/through the map and we ended up in the middle of stage 17's clocktower portion ... again, fighting birds and hunchbacks down the stairs. Whoever was playing was NOT ready for this event and we got hit by an enemy and fell into a pit, causing the screen to blink and we fell back to the ground level of stage 11 and died.

Hey!!!! I finally did it. I beat Castlevania. Thanks for the tips. I couldnt defeat Drac as flawlessly as you showed, but I managed by trying your technique. I was a 1 touch by the time I beat the cookie monster. Thanks again. Megaman 2, Castlevania, and on to the next one.

I have Castlevania Aniversary Collection and Death's Scythes appear at the same time as he does so you can't really stun lock him with the holy water before the weapons starts going for you.

Wow, I had no idea there were all those hidden treasures in that one section in Death's level...... Awesome. I did get the game early on, but unfortunately got rid of most of my games a decade ago. I pretty much knew where everything else was though. This was very entertaining!

The whip only does damage to Dracula's final form if you hit his head. Only the holy water was doing damage in the video. You can cycle between throwing a holy water and doing a jump + whip to beat him a little quicker. There's even enough time to get two whip strikes between each holy water throw.

The axe men have a unique defense/damage calculation thing. Basically, it's two enemies - the axe man, and the shield. The shield takes several hits to destroy, but the Axe Man himself only two or three. You can actually tell the difference when fighting them, as they make a different sound when hit. Notably, TECHNICALLY the shield only covers the front of the Axe Man, and if you can hit him from behind you will deal damage to the enemy directly. There are two ways to do this - one is with the holy water. If you jump and throw it so the entire weapon hits the axe man, you'll note that he dies from just one holy water - this is different than anything else with comparable HP (to the shield+axe man), which would ordinarily take a few holy waters, but since the axe man himself has low HP, he goes down from one. The other is to use the axe subweapon. Throw it and back away a little, and the axe will hit the Axe Man in the back behind his shield, and you can kill him in two or three hits.

Great walkthrough! A couple of additions: You can get the holy water in the section after first entering the castle. Before going through the door at the top of the stairs, use the holy water against the spawning zombies to rack up a bunch of 2000 and 4000-point hits. This can give you 2-3 extra lives very early in the game. If you have the boomerang in Death’s Hallway, use it on the axe men and medusas to rack up the 2 and 3-shots before going into battle with the Grim Reaper. I also recommend saving the pork chop until after getting the first 2-shot in case you get hit, as you can go back down the stairs. Another thing that I noticed about the Dungeon: it’s the only level in the entire game without a bottomless pit. Just about the only fair thing about that level.

Excellent video, as always. I'd like to add, since you're talking about the movie influence in castlevania, that the Belmont family we know in the west is actually spelled Belmondo in japanese, as we can see in the ending of this game, and there's no doubt that his name came from famous french actor and stuntsman Jean-Paul Belmondo, who was very popular in japan back then.
