Soushirou Hokkai, the main composer, wrote the following comment at the liner note for the original soundtrack album: "Sorry for people who disappointed. As you heard, it uses PSG sound module mainly. Such a limitation was needed to realize an action game which approaches "Nocturne in the Moonlight" for PS. And you may know, GBA has specification that makes the adjustment of the PSG volume difficult. However, I never gave up and tried rich expression. Also for the composition, I tried to get back the progressive factors to game music." Source: VGM or Chiptune of The Year 2002 (VORC).

@@jensvide777 I can understand those who didn't like that ost of felt it was inferior to, say, Circle of the Moon's. It really felt like the GBA was PAINFULLY screaming the sound. The melodies are nice and all, and in the end, it's quite good after a while. But really, Circle of the Moon had a more pleasing sound designed OST for ears. Maybe without PSG, things would've turned out just sublime.

@@jensvide777 I agree, Circle of the Moon is great. I owned Circle of the Moon, and then HoD on my GBA back then and was slightly taken aback with both visuals and sound. I even wondered if there wasn't some downgrade or something. Well, Circle of the Moon used to be sold in stores for 45 euros or so for nearly a year. HoD? I got it for...29 euros, i think, roughly two months after its release. Both brand new of course. That alone is another sad sign.....

If he felt that what he had to work with was limited by using PSG, then he definitely made up for it with the harder work he put into compositions. I understand the apology because at first I was one of those disappointed people, since I played both CotM and HoD on the days they released and was following news about them on IGN those days in the early 00s. There were many fans, including myself, for whom the music of Castlevania was always a big deal and when we learned it would be taking a hit in music quality so that they could make a game more like SotN in other ways, we were disappointed by that (maybe mixed feelings is more accurate). It took many years of hearing HoD's ost on its own, without comparison to CotM or other games, to truly appreciate HoD's OST for what it is. Now I love it. There are OSTs back on the NES that still sound better than some modern OSTs. It's not the sound module or instrument, it's what you do with it that counts.

This composer is such a badass, the details he got from such a limited soundchip is a miracle. Also really loved how progressive he made some of these tracks. Castlevanias foundation relys on the strength of its music. Even the titles of the games denote music's importance to the series. The soundtrack for Dissonance is especially nostalgic for me :)

Una obra de arte.
What people take for granted about the 8-bit sounds is that the NES and GB had so few channels that they could never realize a soundtrack with this many harmonies going on. It is so awesome to hear jazzy and dissonant chords with the sound of 8-bit, in my opinion. It's honestly too bad there weren't MORE good composers using the PSG module.
Juste in such an awesome character. Even if he slightly looks like another wannabe alucard, still want to see him in more games.

Speaking only for myself and from what I read from a few other Castlevania fans at the time, when the game was released it was compared directly with the quality of Circle of the Moon's OST, the GBA Castlevania that released just before this one. Plus, I swear in some interviews with people who worked on the game, they admited themselves that they had to use lower quality audio in order to make the game more like SotN in terms of visuals, so that may have given a lot of people an early negative bias towards the music. I think it's easier to give the soundtrack a more fair listen without those biases in mind. When the game came out I thought it sounded worse than CotM, but revisiting the game years later I now love the OST way more than CotM's. Of course, the game does use lower quality synth, but it has far more creative and interesting compositions.
The composition is phenomenal, very complex and full of layers. Unfortunetly the audio quality may scary most of people that played it, but those who can stand it certainly found gold.
Love this OST!

I always loved Harmony of Dissonance ost from the start. I love it so much, that it's usually the main reason i want to replay it ^^
I really enjoy the soundtrack, even more so because of the chiptune aesthetic. Despite what people say, this soundtrack is my favorite of the three gba games.
This is one of those soundtracks that grows on you over time while you're playing through the game.
I admit I only played this game when the Advance collection was released last year, but the music is one of my favourite parts of this game, it stood out to me the most. I never would have had any idea that people disliked it because of the sound quality. I grew up on NES and constantly listen to VG music of that era so maybe that's why it never bothered me, but even so, the compositions themselves are nothing short of fantastic.
20:59 "Halt! The color of your soul... You must be a Belmont"
This is the best soundtrack of all the 3 GBA games and one of the most underrated soundtracks ever. The compositions are consistently strong and catchy. People didn't like it because they weren't expecting the 8 bit sound/aesthetic, but the roughness of the samples effectively builds the atmosphere along with the grotesque, horror-y enemy and environment designs. "Harmony of Dissonance". It's too bad the game was so easy.

This game does have really interesting composition, but that doesn't mean the in-game versions are good. They sound very unfinished, but the underlying composition is very good and on-par with the rest of the series. I honestly love this game's composition, but the in-game versions quite often feel like 2008 youtube 8-bit remixes (the ones with lots of static that are slightly off-key)

It's "Harmony of Dissonance", not "Dissonance of Harmony", lol. Its easy for this sountrack to make a bad first impression, but if you really take the time to listen to it and the way the tracks are composed, it's got a unique power to it. I like it more than CotM's OST now.
Konami should release a remastered album of all the gba osts, to listen to them like they were originally composed
The ultimate test of any game soundtrack is this: does the music get caught in your head? For me, the answer is yes here. So I must count the soundtrack as a success, despite any technical limitations of the sound quality which resulted from the very clear prioritization of graphics. This is one of the exceptionally few cases I can point to of a game not completely screwing itself by making such an imbalanced compromise. Rather, I would say it has given this game a distinctive identity. I know of no other GBA game that treats you to PS1 graphics combined with high-quality 8-bit style soundtrack. It's trippy. But not bad.
The first song is a masterpiece! Very few can even touch it.
Castlevania has a lot of soundtracks where I find myself liking or loving every single song, and this is definitely one of them.

This is probably my favorite soundtrack of the GBA trilogy. Honestly not sure why it's so disliked. Relies less on series remixes than the others, and a ton of tracks here immediately get stuck in my head once I hear them. The lo-fi synth sound effect the game mandated works for it too. A lot of it is like the off-beat jazz of Castlevania IV meets dancey chiptunes. It rules.

They allocated an ABSURD amount of this game's memory to visuals. And it shows. The visuals are out of this world. This left little cartridge space for making a soundtrack as high-quality as say... Golden Sun or Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire. Games like the latter two clearly demonstrate that the GBA was capable of high quality sound. This game's visuals were just SO pumped up that there was little ability to have high quality music. As you note, the compositions are good. The quality is just sacrificed. I wish they had made the visuals just a little less colorful to squeeze some more audio quality out of the original cartridge.

The fact that the GBA had such underwhelming sound hardware forced them to work around it, causing GBA soundtracks to sound pretty diverse. How much 8-bit tunes were used for example varies wildly. They really ran with it in HoD, lol
@Synathidy
Жыл бұрын
It's not that the GBA was inherently incapable of producing amazing-sounding music. I point to Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire and the Golden Sun games as a direct evidence of the system's sound hardware producing great sounds. The problem is that they held this game's visual standards to that of a PS1 game, and after squeezing that level of visual quality on a GBA cartridge, there isn't much space left for audio quality. They didn't work AROUND sound quality here. They made the conscious choice to PUSH sound quality out of the way of graphical quality. The potentially good sound quality was there to use, but they threw it away for visuals.
It's not great but it's not terrible sounding though.
Man this game would have great music but the limits of the GBA really threw a wrench in the works. Some of the songs still sound pretty good, but you really have to treat it as though you're listening to a game 10 years older than it actually is. GBA had a lot of issues with sound, though other games handled it more gracefully than this. Kind of a shame.
Just finished HoD. I actually enjoyed it quite a lot, though it was a bit shameless in everything it picked up from SotN. Though it's a common point of criticism, I liked the music, too. Not because it was good (it wasn't), but because it reminded me of Shadowgate, one of my favorite NES games. Though it doesn't speak well of the game that the music quality, at least technically, is NES level stuff. The composition in itself is good though, I reckon.
@Despatche
7 жыл бұрын
"I like the music for reasons that have nothing to do with the music itself." Shockingly, this is also why everyone *hates* the music. The GBA has the GB sound chip in it, and some developers used it to save space for bigger games on smaller cartridges. HoD was one of these games; even though CotM or AoS use the same cart size, HoD is a bigger game than either of those. The early Yu-Gi-Oh! titles used it for the same reason.
@23Scadu

While I disagree with you on the quality of the music, you're right about the Shadowgate vibes. 20:57 especially sounds like it could be an unused track from Shadowgate that somehow wandered into a Castlevania decades later.
