Ichiban's story introduction is so perfect, he deadass went to prison the whole time Kiryu was busting heads from Yakuza 1-6. Even though Ichiban is a 42 year old hardened ex-con, he is basically a Lvl. 1 Novice character when he gets released from prison in a whole new world different from the one he left behind.

Thats not the reason why its always about kiryu, the real reason is his HUGE popularity, its also the reason why majima keeps appearing and why he was changed from an phsychothic evil goon to a more simpathetic rival, its all about popularity. i heard kiryu had such a huge female fan base that the fan girls were angry he gets someone at the end of yakuza 2 leading to a hard reset in the sequel with that female character never to be seen again, ryuji shouldn't appear in any future game after yakuza 2 but he is so beloved he keeps appearing in non-canon games. The characters got so popular that became mascots meaning they can't change too much, getting a new MC for the franchise was a risky move

Start with 0 and play Kiwami 1 & 2 then go back to the remastered collection and do 3-5 then either play 6 or judgment (my order is 6, Judgment) and then 7. If you wanna go back and experience the original releases. Even Dead Souls is worth checking out. But to Star Wars it a bit. Prequel trilogy: 0-K2 "Enhanced" Original Trilogy: 3-5 Sequel trilogy: 6, Judgement, 7 Rogue One: Dead Souls Original Trilogy VHS collection: original Yakuza 1, 2, and 3. (OG 3 is rough tho) Edit: Also not to be taken seriously with actual Star Wars otherwise that order would be a lot different.

I was avoiding pat's LP until I was finished but I realized I zoomed through a majority of the game just based on how fun it is. It has incredible pacing, at times where other JRPGs hit a lull in the story, Like a Dragon / Y7 hits a peak, and it then manages to top it right when you'd think it'd stop. I agree fully with everything Pat has said about the game, this is the best RPG and a great entry point for anyone interested, and has a very low difficulty curb since its a turn based RPG with added mechanics you can learn to master with time. It's clearly made with love towards RPGs in general, and also reminded me that Atlus is just a Sega subsidary, which is why the P5 OST tracks are also buyables in-game, and its got all the really decent parts that P5 had to offer (social links -> drink links, character commentary during meals you share, a personality stat raising system) and I'm truly hoping the game RGG studio said "if no one likes it we'll just go back to the old game style" never reverts to what it once was. Looking real forward to that Y0 playthrough, Woolie!!

Honestly, more turn-based games need to take note on how dynamic the turn-based system that RGG Studio created. Characters ain't just standing still on the same spot, interactable environments along with party members and enemies, etc. This should be the standard for the future of this genre.

Kiwami suffers from some of the same problems as the first game like Mediocre story and substories compared other games in the series, it doesn't help many substories were altered in kiwami to be more "funny" so many of them fell flat or just drag out when in the original they were just something you did in a minute and moved on. Also like it has been mentioned the Dragon style being nerfed to be completely useless until endgame and considering this was the only style you used in the original, it just feels wrong and unfaithful to the first game especially since every yakuza game after the first game was polishing that style game by game but kiwami drops that for just a watered down version of Yakuza 0 combat. There are other minor problems like the 2005 atmosphere the first game had going for is completely lost in kiwami and just in general feels kinda cheap and rushed in presentation

Basically none of the game is original content. nearly every boss fight has a reused moveset and all the original features they add (mesuking, majima everywhere) just use stuff from 0 with slight tweaks. There's also the issue of "artificial" difficulty with some boss fights, as the game probably has the tankiest bosses in the whole series (except for maybe yakuza 3) and you can't knock any of them down.

Weird. Maybe it's my own tastes or my prior understanding of the games release/remake orders, but having just marathoned Yakuza 0, Kiwami and currently plucking my way through Kiwami 2, I haven't gotten the impression that any of them are bad. I know there's going to be a bit of a shock when I finish Kiwami 2 and go back in time to continue from 3 onward, but the ONLY issue I ever had with Kiwami 1 was FUCKING MAHJONG AND HANAFUDA GAMES and those are in ALL the games anyway. I can definitely see it maybe being 'not as good as technically later entries' chronologically, but I would love to hear Pat explain why it's just outright bad.

Having played every Yakuza game from 3 onward, here’s how I’d rank them: Yakuza 0 (The fighting system is great, the substories are the best in the series and the only karaoke song to top Kiryu’s “Judgement” is maybe Majima’s “Get To The Top” Yakuza 7 (So far, I haven’t completed it but it’s not really gone wrong yet) Yakuza Kiwami (Yakuza 0’s combat is back and the story is touched up with bits of Nishiki’s backstory. Plus, the Majima everywhere system) Yakuza 5 (though I still think one character’s backstory of feeling like she has to have an abortion at a young age for the sake of her idol career, having it and subsequently becoming infertile is WAY too dark for a Yakuza game) Yakuza 4 (Akiyama is a great character and “rubber bullets” became a meme for a reason) Yakuza 3 (quite a different sort of story but decently executed with some great moments) Yakuza Kiwami 2 (I don’t like fighting in the Dragon engine. It’s better than 6’s combat but still a step down from older fighting systems. It’s the only game in the series outside of 7 but I’m still playing that in which I never finished the story) Yakuza 6 (outside of the baby rugby scene, nothing really jumped out as having that Yakuza charm) Yakuza Dead Souls (although Majima on the karaoke almost justifies it being above 6)
