Episode Notes:
1. Remastered in 4K.
2. The Game Gear and SMS versions are nearly identical. You are missing nothing by choosing one over the other.
3. Both gameplay captures come from the Mega SG.
4. Sega really should have made a Castle of Illusion 2 for the Saturn using its 2D capabilities. I mean it was begging for it.
5. I plan on reviewing the 3D remake soon, which is why I brought this combo video back.

I just realized that I watch a ton of these videos because they mentally take me back to a time in my life when I actually enjoyed life.

Castle of Illusion was my first Genesis game in '91. I was blown away by the graphics, colors, and music. I didn't care that it was a Mickey Mouse/supposedly kiddie game, it is excellent. Sold most of my vudeo collection 10 years ago (really bad decision), but still have my original cart 30+ years later.

If you haven't played Land of Illusion for Master System, it's a must play for fans of the Illusion series. It's very fun, different but not too much, and has unique gimmicks and mechanics I haven't seen in other games. I definitely consider it better than SMS Castle of Illusion, and I love that game too.

Fully agree, Land of Illusion is stunning - castle is good but land is nearby perfect.
I HAD IT AS A CHILD IN MASTER SYSTEM AROUND 1991, WHAT GOOD MEMORIES IT BRINGS ME!
This was my first Genesis game. The thing that blew me away at the time was the parallax scrolling effect. It took me a while, but then I noticed the massive background door on the Toy Factory level. I couldn't believe a game console could produce that kind of depth in its graphics.
Out of all the Illusion games, Land of Illusion on Sega Master System is my favorite. It's such a sleeper, 1st and most important is it's fun, Mickey controls well and looks great. But there's so many unique mechanics and things you won't see in another game, I don't even want to list them cuz it'll spoil it for your playthrough. Just a lot of fun stuff that lets u know the devs cared. Quietly one of the best 8-bit Disney games period. SMS Castle of Illusion is great and I love the differences of Legend of Illusion, but the 2nd game Land of Illusion is the one that really sticks out as something very special.
This game and World of Illusion means a lot to me. My older brother got them for me and have been a fan since. It really helped my motor skills and taught me how to 'get good' at games. Music may be average but it's so nostalgic for me that I get strong shivers on nostalgia.
Yep, the Genesis game was great. I enjoyed it, but also it was the only game my sisters wanted to play... so I was always annoyed at their requests to play it if I were already playing something else. 😂 But we let them play it and it was always entertaining.
I played the remake on PS3 first which is a spectacular game as well, I didn’t play this until the Genesis Mini but now I understand why this game gets so much praise still a great game and the kids love it too

The remake was great. The final boss fight is epic.
Outside of Sonic, games like Castle of Illusion & Quackshot hold a very special place in my childhood with the Mega Drive. This was a great video & thank you for taking me briefly back to my childhood with your review!
The SEGA's in-house trilogy for Disney on the Genesis was amazing (Castle of Illusion, Quackshot and World of Illusion). Still suprised Disney hasn't released a collection like they did for Aladdin/Lion King/Jungle Book.

Absolute agreement here. SEGA's Mickey and Donald games would be a massive draw even today, I'd absolutely rebuy World of Illusion alone... though we can probably leave out Fantasia.
didnt experience this game till i was an adult. love what you do here, and for staying true to what you love!
I love how the witch's name is just a name-ified version of the word "miserable".

SLX, this game and World of Illusion have a fond place in my heart. More so World of Illusion as it was a 2 player game and I had a blast finishing that game with my brother.

I think World of Illusion was the first game I ever beat, and one of very few I ever beat period on the Mega Drive.
It was like controlling a cartoon inside your bedroom or wherever the TV was, it was mind-blowing 🙏🏼

To true.
As an SNES kid, Castle of Illusion was one of those games that made me a little envious of the Mega Drive owners in my class back in school (and basically up until a few years ago when I got it) XD All I had was the (brilliant) Game Gear version but that one turned out to be even better in hindsight. Genesis Castle is great but GG Castle is the OG in my book 🙂
Man your channel is the best! So much nostalgia watching these!
Beautiful game this is, I'm lucky to own a really nice CIB Japanese MegaDrive one still. 👏
Hey, i just wanted to say. You might feel that you harp on the same games too often, but i never mind one bit when you bring back up those loves from your childhood. Your videos constantly make me feel like a kid again when you describe your feelings for them. And im over 40, so thats saying a lot. I also respect you for the times youve opened up about the more troubled side of your past, and as someone who went through similar troubles for about exactly the same LENGTH of time, you have inspired me greatly to try and get over that slip in my lifes trajectory. Thanks again man. I have no doubt thst youve helped hundreds of others in a similar manner.
Awesome comparison SEGA Lord X, I like this TBH
Hands down, one of my favorite Genesis games. This took me back. Thanks for reviewing
I still remember playing this when I or my brother was in hospital when there was a TV and MD set up in his ward. I was hooked. I'm sure I asked for it for Christmas right away
I remember renting a Genesis from my local video store & this game. I had a blast playing through it as a kid & was in wonder by its sights & sounds in portraying the Disney world. Such good times!
I had the sequel "World of Illusion". It was one of my first Megadrive games back then in the early 90s, and one of the first games I played through. A few days ago, I played it again on my Anbernic ARC, and this game is sooo easy 😂 - but nice memories!
That music ❤❤❤❤ I LOVE this game. It's the game that made me buy a Mega Drive after I saw it on TV. I played and finished it so many times. The remake was really good too. The final boss fight in that one is one of my favorite recent gameplay memories.
Loved this classic as a child and even more as an adult during the Sega Genesis Mini collection 🖤
Micky was hauling ass to strike that intro pose. 😅😅😅
Am I the only one who watched both Voltron and Duck Tales? I also watched both Go-Bots and Transformers and had toys from both franchises. I still have the Happy Meal™ Duck Tales toys in a bucket somewhere too, and in another box all of the Voltron lions and the little figurines.
Thank you SegaLordX for making this review!!!! I bought a Genesis console bundle years ago that had this game with it. I said to myself " a Disney licensed Mickey Mouse game. How good can this be?" and traded it in to my local retro game store. Fast-forward to now a month or so ago I walked in same retro game store, and loose cart copy was in the display case and I said "oh you're coming home with me and staying in the collection this time!". Really glad to have the Genesis version again back, and I do own the Game Gear port too!
Castle of Illusion for the Master System is such a excellent 8-bit game! It's stands tall on it's own. Whenever i boot it up on my retropie or my original cart on my MS i instantly get warped back to the 90s.. Good times!
oh man thanks so muh for reviewing this! I had even fogotten that this game existed, but this video brought so many good memories. I was 8yo when I played it the last time I think.
Loved this game so much on the Genesis. I would let the attract screen play over and over again. This is one I really regret selling. Also the toy level kicked my ass over and over and over again. I did finally complete it, and the rest of the game was easier, but hearing that BGM again nearly gave me PTSD!
Yeeeeees one of my favorite games..
This game was a gem on game gear. I was blown away by the graphics on it. It was state of the art. On the genesis too.
These games (8/16bits) and its 2013 Remake will ALWAYS have a special place in my heart 💖

Sega Lord X back again keeping Sega Alive
I remember going to rent a game for a weekend when I was a kid and this was almost all they had left I wasn't expecting much. I ended up getting the game for Xmas I loved it so much
I never had a SEGA Genesis, but one of my best friends did, and I was always over at his house. He had Castle of Illusion, and we absolutely loved that. He also had Fantasia, but that's...another story. But, I did get a SEGA Game Gear during its launch year, and one of my first games was Castle of Illusion. I have memories, like you, of playing in my room late into the night. I loved my Game Gear so much! I even had the TV tuner. But the 8-bit version of Castle of Illusion will always hold a sentimental spot for me because it was my game. I also absolutely loved The Lucky Dime Caper, Starring Donald Duck. The graphics and colors in that were also fantastic for the time. Oh, and then of course Shinobi.
I read an interview with the woman who worked with Japanese game company’s for Disney in the late eighties, early nineties and was shocked to find out Quackshoot was almost a Ducktales game! You can tell the game easily could have been one with minor changes.
Castle of Illusion was one of my favorites as a kid. Gaming since the Atari 2600 days, the graphics here were incredible, like playing a cartoon. Better yet, the platforming mechanics were so good! And just the right level of difficulty to not frustrate too much.
I remember Sushi X on EGM stating music was a 10+! At the time of release, I was most impressed by the music playing multiple instruments at the same time. I still think this game looks and sounds great after all these years.
I love these compilation videos and yeah, I didn’t play castle of illusion two years later and it’s a really really nice looking and sounding game and takes me back to a time when both Disney and Sega was both at the top of their game, also about the music I actually like the music in this game it has that typical mega Drive/Genesis FM synth and is very pleasant on the ears.
I want a collection of all these games. They were class!
This was super impressive back when it first came out. I remember thinking how cool his idle animation was. He did it before Sonic, Bubsy, Metal Slug, and others. I liked the remake. The narrator was the same actor that voices "Sully" in the Uncharted games. I liked how when you pre-ordered it for the PS3 Sony threw in the Genesis version, handled by M2². That remained the only way you could obtain it on the PS3.
Great stuff bro!!
Good memories about playing it on the SMS, years before get a Genesis.
All that chocolate in the Master System version used to make me hungry.
I was always a Nintendo kid, but my brother owned a Genesis, and Castle of Illusion was one of the first games he bought for it, alongside Sonic the Hedgehog and Toejam & Earl. And man, I loved all three of them so much! I did briefly own a Game Gear at one point, and tried the Game Gear version of Castle of Illusion, but was actually disappointed in it at the time -- I was expecting something more like the Genesis game, and felt that what I got instead was inferior. I never did wind up finishing it, and quite regret that now, as I'm certain I'd like it a lot more if I were to play it as an adult. I also picked up the remake on PS3, though, and absolutely ADORED it. What a fantastic remake! They really captured the feel of the original game perfectly, and from beginning to end, the game was a joy to play, really taking me back to my childhood. It's up there with Ys: The Oath in Felghana as far as remakes go, IMHO, which is really saying something! Such a shame that the studio behind the remake got shut down shortly after its release, as they were clearly quite talented.
Good reviews! This is one of the first games I saw for the Genesis at a friend's house and it absolutely blew me away as I only had an NES at the time. Definitely a showpiece for the system in the early '90s! The 8-bit version was also one of the first games I played on the Game Gear as well and I was impressed at how good it was for a handheld title! I didn't care much for Mickey Mouse even as a kid, but these games were stellar in their own right! I played the remake many years ago and it was pretty good as well! I would love to see a new Illusions game on modern consoles!
This game was utterly charming. I never played it on the Master System, but I am intrigued. Thank you for showing this blast from the past. Please consider a similar treatment for Quackshot and World of Illusion. Quackshot was one of my favorite Genesis games, and I never got the chance to play World of Illusion.
Played this on the Genesis and the Game Gear. Very impressive title when it came out.
I loved the Castle of Illusion games back then, especially the Master System/Game gear version, I played the hell out of it.
I'd forgotten that this game came out in 1990--BEGORE the SNES came out. A truly epic game for its time.
The master system game was the second game I had for that system, I was about seven or eight. I liked how it had a practice mode: very easy versions of the first three levels, so you could get a feel for the game before tackling the normal levels. Some of the later ones were difficult, as were the dragon and witch bosses, so it was a while before I finished it, but worth persevering with
JFYI the 2013 Castle of Illusion remake was also released on PC. I didn't know this till I realized I have it on my Steam library. I don't remember when I bought it, but it is there. I never had a Sega console, but to this day I love chiptune music from the 80s and early 90s. Thanks to my love for the Atari ST, Amstrad CPC and yes even the Amiga which didn't have many of them. These games look really good and sound even better.
The Master System port was one of if not the first game I ever completed. Good times.
The only case when 8-bit version beat 16-bit version

I totally agree. The gameplay was tighter and more challenging, and even though much of the background music was the same as the Genesis version, I found the 8-bit mix to be more enjoyable. Land of Illusion was an absolutely fantastic sequel for the Game Gear, and while Legend of Illusion wasn't quite on par, it was also a great game.

That dragon is super impressive for 8-bit.
It was my first game on the game gear as a little one. In a way this one is the reason why I never stopped gaming
Now I want The Castle of Illusion collection in modern consoles.
It would've been cool if Minnie had been playable in the end.
Castle of Illusion on SMS is amazing ... It's so good. The Genesis version is like a old skool HD remake
The most charming games of my childhood…
This game was part of my childhood. It was this and Quackshot. In fact, I had those games as in a "2-in-1" cartridge. The remake/remaster was okay. Somehow decent. I liked the Quackshot reference in it. I thought that game was gonna be next to be remade. Alas... :(
I first played Castle Of Illusion on the Master System before I got my Mega Drive and absolutely loved it. Would of been the year it was released in Europe because I just played everything I could get my hands on on the SEGA Master System. I did eventually play it on the Mega Drive about a year or maybe two after. Still own my original systems (being a big SEGA fan) I am. I have more of a soft spot for the Master System version. Both very good developed games. I did sell many of my games to fund other things back in the day, but am on a mission to re collect my childhood games plus others I didn't own but rented or borrowed from a friend. Yes the Master System is underrated. "Nostalgia overload for me"
Yes! Other than Road Rash, Castle of Illusion is my favorite Genesis title. The music and art is just so beautiful...

Oh man road rash! These 2 plus streets of rage 2 and earthworm Jim were my jam.
Only game I wanted to play on the Game Gear. Well. Maybe Shinobi too.
there's something that you missed when talking about the Stages and Difficulty on the Genesis version. on the Practice Setting you have the short length of the stages, in Medium you have the moderate length stages and in Hard you get the most length for the stages. it makes a world of difference imo, as you're not quite prepared for those extra long stages
Mickey Mania was my go to Disney game.
Thanks!
In a lot of ways, I find the 8 bit release to be superior to its 16bits counterpart, but both are truly fantastic games that I spent a lot of wonderful hours playing over the years (and I still do to this day)
14:30 Chocolate devil!
The Sega Disney games were so good! Especially Quack Shots! U think they would re-release these classics in a completion or something, I'd pick it up straight away.
Very cool
I love the 8bit version. 😁
Awesome thanks
just was thinking on ducktales when you mentioned it
My Sega master System copy still sitting pretty on my collection:-))
I'm kinda surprised the remake wasn't included. Still, great stuff!
Tremendos juegazos!! Igualmente me quedo con la versión de Master Systen!! Es una autentica maravilla!! Exelente video!!
Wow great times, I played the sms version a year before upgrading to the MD version and what a difference. It was incredible animation at the time until Sonic one changed everything!
I had the game gear version of castle of illusion & I enjoyed it very much
I'm still hoping they will a Sega Disney 16 and 8 bit collection with Castle of Illusion, World of Illusion, Quackshot, Legend of Illusion and a lot mote. Also the library song sounds very similar to the intro theme song from the CITV show Spatz that aired here in the UK in the early 90s.
I love Castle of Illusion since I played it first when I was 5 😅
I had it on SMS (European version). I love this game so much!
I didn't want this to be one of the best sega games ever but it really was.. alongside alex kidd, this made a lot of the system epic for me... great stuff. ❤
Thanks
The music composition in Genesis Castle of Illusion is brilliant. It's too good for a video game, really.
The new ending is awesome, Streets of Rage is a great game.
I always activate the butt bounce by pressing down, just like scrooge's cane.
I have the sega ages game, I should give it a go since I've never played it before
Took me till adulthood to play Castle of Illusion on the Genesis, first through emulation, then later on I went ahead and bought a copy. I do remember the game in ads, but it's a shame that when it came out, you just didn't see games with their own commercial just yet. At that time, Sega was focused on selling the console itself, they'd just show clips of the games, not really enough time to gauge interest, unless friends had a Genesis, and the games themselves. I unfortunately know no one who had Castle of Illusion, but I knew at some point I had to find a way to play, and eventually did.

I always say that the SMS version of Castle of Illusion is a superior platform compared to Mega Drive. Of course, the graphics took a hit, but the challenge is better.
Duck tales game was so good, because the cartoon was awesome also! Must watch back in 1985 to 1990
I remember when I was about 9 or 10 I had chicken pox for 2 weeks, my mum rented this on master system for me, I played the shit out of it, so I have a soft spot for the 8 bit version. I also relate it to how sick I felt at the time so a bit of a love hate relationship haha
