Castle Ehrenfels - Why is it a ruin today?

Ehrenfels, located in the UNESCO world heritage location of the upper middle Rhine valley, was built in 1211 and destroyed in 1689. Here we research a few more details about its history.

    I am surprised that the castle survived siege in the C17 without destruction, given the availability of cannon and the beautiful target the wall and towers facing uphill presented. In England during what is termed the Civil War (there were, however, several previous ones but without capitalsation) many castles were slighted and left ruinous.

    That is actually a very good point. If we compare it with, say, the way Chepstow Castle was breached by cannon in 1647 (was that the year?) , one should say that a proper artillery attack should have pretty much pulverised Ehrenfels. Remember that Chepstow was heavily fortified against artillery by that time and only withstood three days of cannon fire. I have to read a bit more in my old books, but I recall that the sieges in the thirty year war were ended by surrender through famine and the attackers were interested in it as a fortress for their own purposes, so perhaps didn't want to cause too much damage.
