Casting In Iron (1940-1949)

British Instructional Films present 'Casting in Iron'.
Produced in association with the Council of Ironfoundry Associations and R. & A. Main, Ltd.
A woman cleans her gas cooker. She takes the hot plate off the gas rings and turns it over and over, having a good look at it. Man pushes a trolley loaded with these gas plates. Foreman counts them and inspects one. We see how the pattern for the plate is made. Young man shapes the plate. He dusts something with fine powder. The mould is prepared. It is dusted with powder. Then a dark powder is sifted over the top and then shovelled in. A metal tool is used to press down the powder. The man then jumps up and presses the powder down with his feet. Holes are made in the powder and the sides are bashed with a hammer. The mould is emptied and excess powder brushed away. Holes are cleaned out. Bellows are used to clean away powder. Mould is put back together again. The iron is melted.
Coke, limestone, pig iron and scrap iron are shown. Two men stoke a furnace. Wheelbarrows are emptied down a chute. The molten metal pours from a small hole into a large bucket on wheels. C/U of the hot metal. The metal is poured into smaller containers which in turn are emptied into the moulds. C/U of the metal being poured. Tops of the moulds are lifted off - steam flows out. C/U of the moulded metal. It is lifted out, nails are knocked out and it is stacked in piles. Fettling - two men remove excess moulding material with a hand tool. They then use a machine to smooth the edges. Man uses a file to soften sharp edges. The plates are stacked and loaded on to a trolley. Foreman counts the plates and inspects one, this shot fades into shot of woman in her kitchen cleaning the plates on her cooker.
