Casting a Bronze DAGGER│3d Print to Sand Casting│Knife Making
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Welcome to Robinson Foundry. In this video I will be using 3d printed patterns to cast a bronze knife/dagger. I modeled the dagger in fusion 360 and then printed the patterns on my Creality CR10 and Elegoo Saturn 3d printers. I then made a sand mold using petrobond sand. I melted bronze in my homemade furnace until it reached a temperature of about 2200 degrees Fahrenheit or 1200 degrees Celsius and then poured it into the mold. I finished the dagger by wrapping the handle in copper wire. I did not come up with the design for this dagger. I was impressed by an image I found online and tried to recreate it.

When printing something in two parts and then attaching the parts to each other I like modelling in for example half a sphere in one and a matching indent in the other for easier alignment 🙂 Or two holes + a metal pin or something etc. Makes life much simpler than trying to match two flat surfaces precisely 😊

Yes, common approach. Called registration marks. Remember to put an offset face on the registration marks so your parts fit together though. 0.1 to 0.2mm tends to work well for me!
Cool to watch someone who actually seems set up to do professional sand casting!

I'm new. Is this a big investment for the furnace & sand?
That hot glue trick was pretty good!
Resin printing tip: Once you've cleaned your print in IPA, if you soak it in hot water for about 20-30 seconds, you can just pull the supports off without needing clippers (they'll practically fall off under their own weight), and anything that's left behind can be easily scraped off with a fingernail

Hi im from the future, thanks… this works with lost wax type resins i imagine
next gen nano-tech liquid blades. sounds like a cool idea for a starwars item or something.
I keep coming back to this video. it's a very lovely knife
Very cool Dagger and creative.
Very low volume background music, wonderfully detailed narration, great resolution video; all that and stuff I love watching: sand casting and knife making. How could I NOT subscribe?! Thanks for sharing your passion with us 😁👍
A.very.pertty.knife.and.great Workmanship..10..BRAVO
You give me how it's made vibes
Absolutely beautiful as a display piece or a letter open, as a functional tool or weapon it will suffer a bit and require more maintenance.
That is absolutely beautiful
I really like it. Copper is my fav metal. I love it's properties. I'm glad you added it to the bronze.
it looks majestic
Very nice color and the wire wrap looks amazing. Let's go hunting.
Absolutely my favorite project of yours that I've watched so far (with the small shell being a close second). This thing is BEAUTIFUL and I love the wire wrapped handle. Gorgeous!
I now know what else I need in my collection.
Cool dagger you did really good
Your skills at hand filing and working the metals you use are really amazing and the end product is almost shocking to see. Beautiful work!
If the apocalypse ever comes, i'm living with this man
Beautiful work, Just beautiful.
Loved this !
That's beautiful.
Seeing the wire-wrapped handle literally made my jaw drop. Stunning
You’re awesome dude, keep it up
I'll definitely buy one of these as well
Consider using slightly smaller diameter wire and twisting two strands together before wrapping. Cool look and gives a bit better grip! Love the video! Great info, really enjoyed!
nice work dood! casting daggers today and i think i will use copper wirte today! cheers fella
This post was a joy to watch and very educational… I hadn’t heard of resin 3D printing before now 😳
In a thousand years, archaeologists will find this and wonder how such a primitive civilization made such precision work.
I enjoyed the watch. Thanks for explaining what you do!
Man that is really lovely, very cool indeed.
The dagger turned out nice looking. I liked your idea of soldering the ends of the handle to the knife.
Excellent.
Sand Casting at it finest! Great result and detailing the finished cast. Well done! Great idea of the hot glue on the top of the blade.

That's pretty cool! I'd however put the holes for soldering the copper wrap ends on the edges; that would make them disappear!
Looks awesome! Of course it would’ve sucked if you went to wrap the handle and found out you didn’t have enough wire.
Also loved the copper wrapped handle
I got lost in your voice, then I saw the dagger and was like “Where the frick did that come from?!” lol
This dagger looks incredible! 😍
Awesome
Great job - as usual. Your videos never disappoint. From informative content to final editing, your audience is always gaining insight, inspiration, and knowledge. Bravo!
😳🤯 Sweet! Great work bro. New subscriber here because I was impressed with a project you did that I watched earlier today. You making it look too easy
Very cool it just seemed like a lot of work
I like the dagger if you do another video try paracord on handle. 👍
I most certainly enjoyed watching.
Very well done. Thank you.
Awesome. Amazing hand made
I don't work in metal, but I can certainly appreciate your craftsmanship. Nicely done!
Very cool piece
Brother, the hot glue on the tip of the knife is genius! I have injured myself too many times by sanding too close to the tip and then stabbing my finger/hand!!
So that’s how they made the centurion’s boot knife… I want one now!~

Actually, a real knife would have been cast much thicker, then hammered down to a similar thickness to harden the bronze. Otherwise, bronze doesn't hold a cutting edge too well. A dagger for decoration or display like this works fine with just straight casting, but things like extra hardening processes and difficulty of obtaining tin were big reasons why eventually everyone just started using iron when they had the heating technology to do so.
Interesting idea for a dagger 🗡. I like the design and the copper wire handle wrap. Excellent job. Just subscribed. Thanks for the video
That was awesome.
wow, great video! there is a nice way to straighten out wires with a drill.
Super nice!
great video as usual, I love your way of filming.

love to see with silver wire.
That is badass! I want that!
Dope!
Really cool!
That is a beautiful, leaf-shaped blade. It’s been fascinating to watch your castings grow in sophistication as your technique has improved. Regarding the sharpening of the blade, I have read that some cultures hammered the edges on a metal post, after the initial sharpening. This compressed the metal along the outer 1/4 inch or so. This made the edge harder and finer, and left a characteristic ledge around the blade. The appearance is hard to explain. I’m sorry I can’t say it more clearly. Again, it’s very nice and innovative work. Just out of curiosity, how do your neighbors feel about your foundry? Would you care to sell a bare, rough finished blade blank? Let’s be careful out there.
Hi new sub in the uk 🇬🇧 here. This came out looking amazing, when you have all the right equipment just shows what you can do. I am going to try a more amateur version of this as unfortunately don’t have a 3D printer. Love the home made furnace as well, I have a beer barrel in my garden and you have now inspired me to make my own. I was going to get a 10kg devil forge but can’t quite afford it just yet.
Beautiful piece! Steel is obviously better for a "real" dagger, but bronze just looks so damn good, I love it. That dark, near-golden colour looks amazing.

Always producing awesome work mate
Nice. Work
Really nice!
Great work! Looks great and I think you did an excellent job with the copper wrapping!
Fantastico🔥
If you think about it, all living things derived from the primordial soup. You. Are. Liquid.
That is SHARP! and I don't mean the edge
Nice work on the design and casting of the knife. Fascinating to watch. I loved how the blade turned out, but I have to say I think a nicer handle material, or maybe doing a more interesting pattern in the wire-wrap might have made it nicer in my opinion. But still.. love the design and the look of the finished blade.
Not gonna lie...those little nodules left over from the support material looked kinda neat, and I somewhat wished you'd keep them. :)
Beautiful'
this dagger was perfect for the aswang here in the Philippines 🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭...
Man you gotta make it look so old that the guys at your local pawn shop think you found some ancient artifact that cost like a gazillion dollars and make a prank of it lol crazy idea but people like that sorta stuff 😄✌Or bury it with your name and year on it for aliens to find haha w
impressed
Love the knife, though I would have added a filler on the handle sides, probably wood, so it would have a better grip.

I mean this dagger is purely decorative, you wouldn't do this method at all if you wanted a functional weapon.
I absolutely love the look of the dagger. My questions are: 1] How is the weight ? 2] Where is the balance ? 3] Have you tried throwing it ? Seriously though the design is sick

Look nice but don't confuse it for a bronze blade made for any form of cutting. Bronze has to be work hardened to not bend as much and hold an edge. This is all decoration. Now if he made the edges a lot thicker on the dagger and hammered them into a final shape and then finished the edge with a bit of filing, then the casting could have been used more like a knife.
@JJAB91

@@silentferret1049 I would still worry about aspects like grain size and temper. Casting generally never was done for hand weapons for many reasons after all.
That’s awesome I want to make one
That turned out fantastic! Nice job. What is the overall length and thickness?
Super 👌
Wow that dagger design is just incredible, is there a way i can get a template of that design, id love to make a steel version of it 😁🙏🏻
very much enjoying your videos, thank you well appreciated. I would like to try and cast this dagger have you shared the files for this I wonder....
Looks great, as always : ) . Have you ever cast anything with Nickel alloys?
I hope to see a bronze tomahawk !!! I have several of you'd like to borrow one for a mold
Awesome job, but I must say - without a proper bolster this knife can cut your hand as easily as it can cut anything else.
Would love to buy one of these blades from you!
love the design and video, you make it looks easy. I'm tryin to figure out Fusion 360 myself. Any chance of getting that file to use as a template to start from?
if only bronze was as strong as steel
beautiful piece! I like the way you do your videos with explanations of every step that's why I subscribed and tickled the bell. Do you sell your work?
Slick transitions
I don't have access to a 3D printer, does anyone know where I could purchase 3D molds like in this video? I like the idea of the two piece mold. Great video!
One of my favorite projects that you created. Are you willing to share your file for the dagger? Thx Mike
Don't you have to cure resin with UV in addition to washing it off?
Very well done. Should have work hardened the edge before sharpening though.
Mastercrafter sell that your making millions
Dagger turned out great but I would have done a leather wrapped handle instead of the copper.
