GW-5000-1JF: Looks basic, but is seriously prestigious. Nobody'll give it a look

I bought my first CASIO G SHOCK back in 1987...I was 17 years old after i saw the commercial on TV with the hockey players slapping a G-SHOCK wrapped around a hockey puck all over the court...I just had to have one...I was bagging groceries and pushing shopping carts for Winn Dixie and it's the first thing I purchased with my own money...I've been wearing a G-Shock ever since....I'm 46 years old now wear a G100-1bv...I think Casio could do better at making better case backs... they seem to be quick stamped too thick with sharp edges and now even the overall designs are starting to get a little weird and over colored...also too many useless round digital eyes that blink with useless information...I wish they would make more classic designs and even go with some tritium technology on the analog models...and the lack of second hands on the anologs is kinda standard...worst of all are their prices...even basic models start at $75+ and go up to $2000! but I digress...I'm still a Casio man till the end.

Thanks for the review and comparison between models. I was trying to decide between the 5610 and the 5000 but you’re right the 5000 just has that premium quality. Just pulled the trigger on it.

Just got mine in the mail! :D I really have to say it is very expensive. But looking at it from a watch enthusiast perspective, this is truly a really well made Japanese G-Shock watch. GW-5000 just feel very, very high quality overall. It is truly a collector's piece. In terms of functionality and value, DW-5600 and GWM-5610 should do the trick. But GW-5000 is defintely for the enthusiast.

I wound up buying a GW-5000-1JF for myself. Feels amazing on the wrist, but more importantly it's a sleeper. I took it to the CASIO store in SOHO and nobody recognized it as a G-Shock until someone looked up "GW-5000" and realized it was *THE* square-body G-Shock. (aka: not chinese, not thai, not fancy, not "urban lifestyle," but rather a full-on proper Japanese G-Shock.) I have grown to see it as Casio's love letter to their home market, along with the MTG / MRG halo models. (I do wish I could get a MTG or MRG at some point just to have an analogue compliment to the GW-5000). Great review! Sells this watch.

The urethane strap is the big difference to me in practical terms. It is more comfortable than the regular material.

Great option don't need to fool with the buttons.....all on your phone and no need for atomic antenna.......right way to go.

I own a 5000U. Improvements: This watch is a tool for me. I use it at night often. The intermittent 1.5 or 3 second backlight is useless. Option for a 15 second, or even manual on/off back light so users can see functions in the dark without having to hit the light button again. Second: Wider band please. Personal preference of course but I'd like to see this watch band a consistent width from lug to clasp or no more than a 1mm taper. Lastly; of course the buttons are hard to get to without some concentration. Larger buttons would be great but if a diameter increase is not possible, consider making the buttons taller by .5mm and maybe some knurling. I like this watch. It could be better as a tool for us working guys with some minor tweaks.

Will a Casio combi bracelet fit this watch?

I bought one yesterday at Bic Camera store in Tokyo for 228 USD. I also have a DW-5600 and a GW-5610 and I can tell this one is worth if you are a G-Shock fan or collector.

Hi...i got this watch from a top seller on ebay. Its brand new and never used. But i noticed a little small white corn/particle/dust inside the crystal and i also noticed that it leaks lume/light from the right side of the display. Is this a defect unit or is yours the same?

van Yama I had a speck of dust in my DW-5600E that I removed by taking the module out, but your comment amount an uneven illumination is concerning... I can't say I've seen that on any of my G Shocks.

@@JamieHofman $284 Oct. '19... Went with 5610 instead. I'll be getting metal bezel's and metal/leather straps to interchange when the mood fits. I'll end up spending more than the GW-5000 is worth, but will look like a $500 full metal chrome or something 100's of years old with aged components!

i think the contrast is slightly better on 5610?

I am torn between the 5610 and the 5000......have a combi band to put on it......don't care for the rubber bracelet.....I am not a collector.....any suggestions??

They can only make this better now by making the display higher contrast and maybe an AR coating underneath the crystal.

My wrist's 7 inch and it suits perfect

Really nice camera work and pleasant presentation but you really didn't "review" the watch. Mostly just compare & contrast with other models. Good for those who previously owned the watch. Not so much for folks just starting out.

Now there is a new square flagship. Casio GMW-B5000. Full metal, stainless steel bracelet and stainless steel bezel. At around $550.

The case is new as it has new way of attaching the strap/bracelet. It has new type of solar panel. Features a Bluetooth connectivity. It's a really interesting piece for a G-Shock fan. :)

DDW Reviews Since that comment I have bought a couple of watches and in these watches there is a GMW-B5000D! I love it, really happy with it. I have a short wrist video on my channel. I am thinking of getting the GW-5000 and I got back to your video. Good comparison.

They need to make this watch more expensive like 1000 dollars to discourage other people from buying it. I want to be the only one wearing it in my town.

GW 5000 and GW 5610 do not have the same module. The functionality is also different.

I don't have the exact date but I remember I bought it immediately after launch. Maybe it is a regional thing, I live in eastern Europe.

Z-Collector Yeah that's the module that the GW-M5600 would have. Multiband 5 instead of 6 and a few other small changes. Weird.

The 5000 is heralded more because it’s made in Japan...IMO
