Cascadia Tremor leading to Bigger Quake? Historical Occurrences of full and partial ruptures. 6/10

Ғылым және технология

A U.S. Geological Survey study of core samples from the ocean floor, taken near the Juan de Fuca fault off the coast of Oregon, shows that large, so-called megaquakes of more than 7.5 magnitude have occurred on average every 246 years during the past 10,000 years. The Last Full rupture occurring 324 years ago. We see 19 earthquakes in the last 10,000 years that ruptured the entire length of the Cascadia fault, which requires roughly an M9 event to shift the 1000km coastline by the 10-20 meters expected. The last one, in 1700AD, was not proven until the 1990s. The interval between events has been observed to vary from 200 to 800 years, so if the future is like the past, the event is likely to hit any time from now until 500 years from now. The long thick lines in the figure are these biggest events. This and the last figure are from a recent review of the history of faulting along Cascadia inferred by Prof. Goldfinger.

    Thank You for keeping us updated on the earthquakes! I have been feeling that there have been a lot of earthquakes in California and when I'm lying in bed I feel like I'm rocking, but I know that we are not having one in my area but it's like I can sense that there is one going on and when I tell my boyfriend he thinks that I'm imagining it, but I keep telling him that I know what I am feeling and when I tell him that I proof, that's when he starts to believe me. I have always been in tuned to earthquakes and I also pay attention to animals because they can sense when an earthquake is about to happen and I pay attention to the weather patterns because they can give you a warning sign that one is about to happen and I believe with the problems that we have had around the coastline having a lot of land slides on the coast line, the sink holes and if the weather is going from hot to cold and humid then there's going to be an earthquake. But I'm concerned about the volcanoes and if they go off then it's going to cause extreme major problems, so with so many earthquakes that are happening it's either going to cause the volcanoes to erupt or both and we're near a lot of volcanoes and they are near the San Andreas fault line and it reaches from Washington to California. Mt. Saint Helens could go off and if there's a big quake it could cause the other volcanoes to erupt as well then it's going to cause a tsunami. So please be prepared for when it does happen and have an emergency kit ready for you and everyone else in your family. But it's going to happen and I pray for everyone's safety, because when it does happen have some stuff that is not listed in the emergency kit. Have garbage bags, rubber bands, rope, toiletries, matches or a lighter, grocery bags, a knife, toilet paper, food, water, flashlight, batteries, clothes, can opener. The garbage bags are for you to use it to keep you warm and they're good to use as a tent and the rope is to tie it down, and the store bags are too used to start a fire with some wood and they are good to use to keep you from getting hyperthermia and frostbite, so if it's freezing cold you put the bags over your feet with the rubber bands tied around to keep it in place, and you can use it to cover your head and hands. One thing that people who are homeless they know how it is to survive and they had to learn it the hard way, but when a natural disaster happens people don't know what to do in the situation, because people are so used to having a roof over their heads and they get used to having electricity and a lot of things that we get used to having, but when it's gone then they don't know what to do and they expect people are going to help them out, but if you're on your own then you have to fend for yourself, so don't expect that the government, cops and firefighters are going to be there and help you out. You have to learn how to fend for yourself in situations like that and yes you might be able to get some help, but if you don't then you will be on your own.

    When I lived in SoCal, I would sometimes feel that rocking sensation when in bed, too. This was before internet, so had to rely on newspaper accounts of quakes, and they were pretty sketchy if there wasn't damage. After moving to Midwest, I didn't feel that anymore for about 30 years -- until today! Yowza 😮

    A lot of people are sensitive to coming earthquakes. I know of someone who would see something shaking on a shelf when they looked at it (although it wasn't) and an earthquake would occur within several days. A lot of people are going to be homeless when this thing kicks off, without ANY help!

    This was a really thorough update. Really appreciate EM looking at data over time. Perhaps adding some smoothing to the data over time, maybe even taking 1st or 2nd derivatives and looking for inflection points might be useful. After all, this is a continuous, semi-regular process of subduction. What's old will eventually be new again. I'd hazard a guess that the microquakes will eventually lead to being able to map the interlocking features of the plates. More sensitive and more numerous quake sensors blanketing the surface should increase resolution. Add a dash of AI, and techniques from other fields may help unlock the mysteries of what's going on down thar 👍

    Cascadia will be bad but here in the PNW the real danger are multiple fault ruptures. If the Devil mountain, South Whidbey and Saddle mountain(Seattle) faults rupture at the same time like they have in the past there would be 1000x more damage locally. There are many lakes, hills, swamp lands and dead forests from the past event. I'll try and post a link.

    Every dam on the west side will no doubt collapse they are all 50 to 100 years old. The 4 or 5 Dams in the baker region that would send a tsunami down stream of the skagit river, Earthen dams off Highway two that would send a lake down sultan basin towards Everett. The power grid would fail, the roads and bridges would collapse not to mention the millions of people who will go full blown anarchy.

    Not so - the whole "subduction" part is that the old Farllon Plate remnants are reluctantly getting shoved down by the America Plate. Which also causes faults as the plated bend and crack. TEM has the right of it

  • @tofuluvrr837

    @tofuluvrr837

    @@gigartina That is incorrect. A subduction zone is a specific type of fault where one tectonic plate is sliding beneath another tectonic plate. That is where the Juan de Fuca collides with the North American plate 70-100 miles off the coast of Washington, Oregon, and Northern California. It is this activity that creates much of the "Ring of Fire" activity throughout the cascades, but to say that any activity in the Cascades counts as activity in the subduction zone is not correct.

    Not a chance. I live for the Cascadia Subduction. Every time someone mentions it my response is always "I have got to see this!" If its going to kill me then oh well, but I have lived my life here on the edge and truly, I have got to see this!

    Just our past sins. We still have to "pay" for the current stuff. Jesus' descending into hell for 3 days was to bring to Heaven all those who had died before Him. We're not off the hook.

    @susanjacquier5358 Susan, if the plates slide under, then why have the volcanoes that have bin off the coast still there after thousands of years? Wouldn't they be dragged under the content. They go up and down, and sideways, you have very little knowledge. The bottom of the ocean has not changed in how you think millions of years. The earth is about 260 thousand years old, but you're far too brainwashed. They lie to you. I've wasted a nuff time may ABBA FATHER YHWH BARUK you. thx
