The phrase "More parties in the USA" at 3:39 is a reference to the Jonathan Richman song "Parties in the USA" which is on the album in the background of the shot!

I hope you will fulfill that goal of vacationing to the Cascadia region of North America. Years ago, I was able to spend a few days in Glacier National Park (Montana) in which several distinct ecosystems come together with a wide array floral and fauna display during the growing season. The glaciers, lakes and waterfalls there were lovely to behold, as well. Someday, I would like to visit British Colombia to add to my Cascadia experience and memories. Thank you for this review. I enjoy the game, along with many I have taught how to play it.

Great video. I've already fallen in love with Cascadia and enjoy all that it has too offer. I appreciate the commentary regarding how Cascadia can appeal to both newcomers and established gamers. There are subtle layers of depth to explore and delight in -- like an elegant wine. Also, the shout out to OFPG is very well deserved. There is definitely a quality than cannot be described, but must be seen. They do treat the boardgame community as an extension to their family. As any family reunion can attest to, this is not always an easy task. Thank you for all that you and Elaine do.

Thank you for your thoughts on Cascadia. You're so good at explaining what makes you appreciate (or not appreciate) a game. And I don't know how you do it, but you always manage to make games look better than other reviewers. This was one of the games that didn't really appeal to me because it looked so bland in pictures and videos. But then even that issue is solved by how it looks here. All in all, makes me curious to give this one a try.

If you're still looking for a "first-game" I highly recommend Sushi Roll (or Sushi Go if you must but I prefer Roll). It's got cute art, chunky dice you get to roll a lot, interesting but not overly complex scoring options, a little "take that" if you want it, and it plays fast enough to not over stay it's welcome. It's a perfect first game imho with the added bonus that it's super affordable so if she hates it you're only out $15 instead of 40!

Discussion point: Incorporating an extra/specific mechanic to create variation on an existing core mechanic to the game implies that that core mechanic isn't quite as refined/balanced/developed as it could have been. (In this case having a market refresh mechanic, even if being able to do so is as a reward for taking one of the more limited tiles).

@@NoPunIncluded this is an open design discussion, no need to put it all on the line like that! Now if that extra mechanic doesn't interfere with the main gameplay loop and has minimal overhead then perhaps it's the best solution.

Oh, I like the idea of discussion questions. My guess is that trying to avoid these solutions would result in rules becoming complexer or less intuitive. This solution is easy and intuitive, and elegantly addresses two of the main issues many tile laying games have.

This game looks super cool, and I love the review! My only criticism is that you've classified the whole of cascadia as an American thing, even mentioning British Columbia but neglecting to mention it's a different country. And locally, that's really important! As a Canadian, the cultural dominance of America is stifling at best, and within cascadia I have more friends on both sides of the border that agree on an allegiance to the local area more than to their respective countries. (If this is also a failing on the game's part, I would like to know about that as part of the review, though a quick google suggests that Flatout has offices in both the US and in Canada)
