Carving an Apple spatula

I don’t carve many cooking spoons. Even fewer spatulas actually. I decided it would be a nice change of pace to carve one for my KZread followers to show a little variety. Enjoy.

Watching you work it occurs to me that spoon carving teaches to be really creative with our grip on things. Got to hold this so it's at that angle, and stable, but all the fingers and thumbs are clear of the path of the axe, or the knife ;)

Absolutely. Most of the grips are very intuitively your mind and body just adapt accordingly. There are grips that I’ve used before I’d even seen them online or in books. For the most part, our common sense tells us what to do if we really listen

Excellent! Axing's a blast....I really do love it!! I'm getting gutsy with it and it's paying off by "nearing the line" confidently. But I've paid the price too.... Good vid. Sean!

@@HuronSpoonCo That certainly always helps. I really need to build a stump block just like yours. Very functional and a lot lighter than a full sized stump.

Mark Wilkinson I actually have an album on my Facebook page that outlines how I made this one if you’re looking for pointers

@@HuronSpoonCo Thanks man, but I don't do FaceBook. I've actually studied it from some of your videos, and I'm pretty good mechanically. I'll get it done and leave it maybe 2 or 3 inches higher than what I think my minimum would be. I can always trim the legs. I appreciate the reply and info on where your guide is though. Looking forward to more from you. Thanks.

Where did you get your carving posters?... Those are very cool for a carving shop wall... Your videos are very informative. You have inspired me to build a very similar spoon carving block... Great design.

That turned out great. I would have liked to have the camera a little closer during your knife work to see the progress a little easier.

Doug Roll apologies for that. I’m not really set up for perfectly shot videos honestly.

Doug Roll no I understand totally. Sometimes it just seems as if I can either get better at my craft or get better at sharing it with the public. Sometimes there just aren’t enough hours in the day

Great video. I enjoy watching you work and seeing what you create. Why was it necessary to soak the Apple billet? I thought Apple was very slow to dry. How long did it soak for?

linda austin-morin I actually soak all my carving wood to ensure moisture content is at maximum for carving. This makes it much easier on the knives as well as my body. I change the water once each week to keep it fresh.

Yes i do. This keeps it soft enough to comfortably carve as well as prevents cracks from appearing in the wood from drying

Jane Camisa I understand. It’s difficult to make a quality video when all you have to film on is a cell phone. I don’t have a fancy Nikon, a camera crew, or any experience with filming and editing so it’s not easy to convey everything I’d like to in a single video. I do have other videos that show greater detail if you’re interested
