Carving a Fan Bird Dove at Fan Carver's World

Step-by-step instructions of how to make a fan bird dove …tool identification …explains the purpose of the cuts …how to do the cuts …when to do the cuts. Fan-Carving is mechanical …everything has a purpose and a time. The cuts lend themselves to the bird design. Fan-Carving is an Old World folk art. It is the art of riving long-fibered wet wood and then turning the blades to create a 3-dimensional design.

    Thank you so much for your kind comments, Steve. Being a wood novice is a benefit. You don't have to "retrain" some preconceived ideas ...especially with "riving." This may be the only type of carving that you have to "feel" the rive line (fiber) and let the knife go with it. It's FUN!!! Watch our Riving video to get that part down. AND we are here to help you should you need first hand advice. Good luck :-)

    Love this project, one that I really am interested in carving...what is the hand knife you are using, as I would like to try that style. And I will finally order a draw knife like that one...I have another, but it is way to big for such small work:) am wondering how small a bird one can make doing this? It would look great on a native flute as the fipple part. THANK YOU for a great video...finally someone who knows how to TEACH it:) Cheers!

    Hi Vicki, The hand knife I use is the Flexcut Pelican knife. All other tools are Stubai gouges ...except, of course, the Flexcut 3-inch Drawknife that we designed for Fan-Carving. The patterns can be down-sized to create whatever size is desired ...I've seen very small fan birds. Some people like to challenge themselves to see how small they can go :-) Thank you for the kudos ...makes our day :-)

  • @FanCarversWorld

    @FanCarversWorld

    Bob Cochrane Thank you for watching our video. I wonder if you have watched our video on "Riving" the feathers/blades? Also, I don't know what tool you're using for the riving process ...in any case, I can tell you that the splitting edge of your tool is on a slight angle. Quite often the knife gets slightly tipped at the interlock (because that portion of the feather is more narrow ...less resistance. Pay attention to getting your knife started correctly and then Hold-that-rive-line throughout that entire rive. Examine the feather's thinness from top to bottom and see where the angle has shifted ...then you will know the area that you need to pay attention ...if you cannot determine an area ...if the whole length appears to be gaining thickness in gradual degrees/increments and shows up thick at the base, then you've begun your rive at the very top with the angle of your knife very slightly tilted. I hope this helps.

  • @FanCarversWorld

    @FanCarversWorld

    Just found your comment! The reason the feathers are thicker at the base is because the drawknife is not straight ...it is a bit tipped ...meaning that the cutting edge is closer to you ...the top edge is tipped out ...away from you. Straighten that out ...then "pull" on both of the handles while riving down ...with a slight bend in the blade. See how that works for you ...good luck :-)

    In the video I heard her say that she simmered the piece of wood in water on the stove for a couple hours before carving. I also heard her say something about the water coming out as she was cutting it. I didn't hear whether it was green wood or dried before she started though. I am guessing it can be green to do this.

  • @FanCarversWorld

    @FanCarversWorld

    Just found your comment! The measurements are 5-inches long ...2-inches wide ...1/2-inch thick (or slightly wider) ...the feathers are very thin ...like a thin shaving ...don't know a measurement. However, thinner is "always" better ...for interlocking, they lay more flat ...and if you lose some, it shows no gap.

    We hear so many regional names for white cedar. It is for that reason that we go by the botanical name of Thuga Occidentalis. A person can reference that name in a book, online or wherever they chose. In that way, they can sort out what it means to them in their area. Otherwise it can be very confusing. We learned this very soon, when we were traveling throughout USA and Europe teaching Fan-Carving.

    It is very nice. It looks amazing but, I don't think it looks realistic, if that is actually the purpose intended. My main objection is the 'body' of the bird. It is too narrow. You could have started with a chubbier piece of wood, and just chiselled enough wood away from the feathers portion. It would have given you the opportunity to have a more realistic, and why not say "cute" part of the body, giving it a little more of a round form. Just my opinion. Not here to ruffle any feathers. See what I did there? "Ruffle"! No! Not here for that.

  • @sarolynnye8132

    @sarolynnye8132

    3 жыл бұрын

    LOL ...no feathers ruffled here, Mario. And, you're right, it's not meant to be a realistic bird. It's a symbolic bird with legends and customs that date to the late 1500's that we've been able to track. We have done the style you suggest, but it's not fun ...and it takes away from the graceful bird hanging by a string and gentle turning in the air currents. There's a purpose for that. Thanks for your comment :-)
