Your bro’s marine tank is already a deadly ticking time bomb with strong water current, overstocked fish, and lacking efficient biological, chemical, and mechanical filtration systems. Just to share below for marine tank beginners and keepers, based on personal experience and friends as well, who used to be marine tank hobbyists/enthusiasts for a very long time: - First, properly clean and disinfect empty tank. Do not use laundry detergents, regular bleach may be used. Just ensure the tank is thoroughly washed a few times making it totally free from any bleach residues. Then, wipe dry the insides of the tank using a clean flannel rag/cloth, or paper towel. - Fill the tank with fresh water until it reaches 95% or more of its capacity. If you prefer to use commercial purified water, or from your home’s multi-stages portable purifier, the better. - Dilute the correct amount of Tetra AquaSafe solution based on the tank's capacity to remove any toxic heavy metals. Let the water rest in the tank and leave it for at least 2 days without any running aerator/air pump and power head. Remove the sludge impurities settling at the tank’s bottom using a clean aquarium siphon. - Pour the right amount of marine salt mixture while the power head is running at the bottom of the tank until the desired salinity is achieved. - Activate the air pump as well, thus floating dust particles would sink, or simply fully cover the top part of the tank to avoid accumulated dusts. - Run the powerhead and air pump for 3 days for the mixture to fully dissolve and circulate in the tank. - Carefully position the cleaned live rocks in the tank serving as a natural biological filtration. It should be 1 kilo per gallon of water ratio, hence for a 50 gal. tank, 50 kg. live rocks is required. - Let the water in tank with live rocks mature for 1 month with running power head, air pump, sump or external canister filter, and skimmer to achieve good bacteria build-up. Patience is indeed key is marine tank keeping. - Live rocks should be cleaned and brushed first by spraying fresh water, and checked for hidden little mantis shrimps which must be removed. Ticking sounds coming from your tank every now and then is an indicator of its presence, which may possibly be fatal to fish once grown. - Briefly dipping the live rocks in fresh water to remove dirt and other contaminants from its source works as well, but never for a prolonged period of time. It would cause the live rocks to die, and blacken emitting foul smelling rotten odor, no longer suitable for the tank. - Do not buy live rocks ahead of time, unless you already have marine water available in big containers at home prepared in advance where the rocks could temporarily be stored with running air pump. Further, never leave the rocks out in open air unsubmerged in marine water which would dry and kill the living organisms. - Ideal power head computation should be, tank capacity x 4 liters/gal x 4 to get the water flow rate per hour. Example: 50 gal x 4 × 4 = 800liters/hour flow rate. Hence for a 50 gal tank, get at least a Rio 800 power head, or its equivalent for other brands. For a separate sump, its capacity should be added in the total equation (tank + sump x 4 × 4). Rio brand works really well for my friends and I, reasonably priced, with reliable ceramic impellers, and quality product we utilize for both fresh water and marine tanks for more than 20 years. Do not buy one with a metal impeller since it would just corrode in time, and dissolved metal would be toxic for the fish. - There should be a highly effective built-in or separate multi-stages sump, or external canister filter with medias like Eheim, Tetra, Fluval brands, etc., a high priority in marine tank keeping, for the best mechanical filtration. Not having a good one at all is self-made marine tank disaster in the making. - Install a very reliable protein skimmer with replaceable air wood for small tanks, or turbo skimmer for with the correct power head for big tanks, serving as the aquarium’s chemical filtration. Ensure that the skimmer’s cup collecting toxic liquid impurities is regularly checked and cleaned. - Put a tester fish in the tank after a month. But first, wash the plastic bag containing your newly purchased fish with fresh water to remove any contaminants before placing it inside the tank to float and acclimatize. - After 30 mins remove the fish using a fish net, and quickly dip it for a second in fresh water to remove any attached fish parasites before releasing it into your tank. - Never put any remaining salt water from the plastic bag into the tank, to avoid possible contamination, and unseen parasites coming from the pet shop where the fish was puchased. - Feed the fish, observe, and if it survives for a week. Then gradually you may add more fish. Do note that all newly acquired fish should be quarantined first for at least a week in a separate aerated smaller or hospital tank with medication, before releasing in the main tank. - Fish overstocking could easily pollute water quality, and promote higher ammonia level, leading to fish mortality. Keep the number at a minimum. We used to follow 1 fish per 5 to 10 gal ratio, depending on fish size. - Do not over feed, and remove uneaten floating/sinking pellets in 5 mins which easily pollutes the water, or better, just provide live brine shrimp hatchlings instead. - When buying a fish, select the one which readily nibbles on pellets if the seller allows, very active, and easily scares away when you slightly tap the tank. - Most fish sold in market though cheaper were caught using cyanide, sold in bulk per bag, hence just die in your tanks days after. - There are reliable marine fish exporters in Parañaque, a paradise for marine fish hobbyists. Fish prices are far cheaper, quarantined, excellent quality, and condition, including crustaceans, anemones, among others. - Sand substrate is not advisable for an “all fish" aquarium which only traps lethal ammonia. A very thin layer would do provided it could easily be cleaned, as required. Though, sand works quite well for coral and invertebrate tanks with very limited number of small fish. - Wave maker is for long big tanks only, but not for small ones since it would cause fish stress and inevitable mortality. Its power would depend on the tank’s length/size, and properly positioned as well for the live corals and invertebrates to live and thrive. - There should be proper lighting for invertebrates/live corals, requiring maintained cool temperature, thus a reliable aquarium chiller is recommended, or simply position the marine tank in an air-conditioned room. - Rapid red/green algae growth on live rocks and tank's glass is a sign of nitrate/nitrite build-up, a result of too much light exposure and deteriorating water quality. - Always check the salinity level, and water quality using available reliable Tetra/Sera water quality testers. - It is best to have a reserved marine water mixture aged and aerated regularly in a covered big container, as needed for partial water changes. - A cloudy marine tank water with fishy smell is a result of insufficient and ineffective filtration systems. While an established odorless aquarium, has a very efficient, biological, chemical and mechanical filtration systems with crystal clear water quality. A marine aquarium may be difficult to set-up at first, a trial and error thing. However, once you know the basics, DOs and DONTs, and get the hang of it, it is even much easier to keep and less maintenance than fresh water tanks, since you only need to add fresh water whenever evaporation occurs. Hoping this long eyeful read would help your brother in upkeeping his tank, while enjoying his hobby. All the best to him!

WOW!!! Very detailed, and I surely learned a lot. Tried a salt water fish aquarium before without success years back. Will try it again soon, since what you've shared is very encouraging. I want to revive my idle tank once more and long been wanting to have an invertebrate and live corals set-up.with small colorful shrimps, anemones, clown fish, blue and yellow tang only. Thanks for this!

Bro, I just have a few questions for I'm interested to convert my fresh water aquarium into salt water soon. What kind of mechanical filtration do you consider the most effective, and filter medias to use? Will my old top filter be effective for my planned marine aquarium, and where do I buy external sump? Will the fish survive without live rocks? Kindly name hardy species so I know what to buy later on. Many thanks!

Tama sya sa deep sand nya para hindi ka lage nagwawaterchange at acclimation very good tested and proven through the years, yung problema lang hindi nya quarantine yung isda sa maliit pang aquarium linagay nya meaning stress yung isda sa main show tank nya pa, at malakas yung wavemaker nya po altough tama naman yon para sa oxygenation at aeration ng aquarium at to promote microorganisms that eat fish waste and for free fish food like how goldfish and koi eat algae extra stress pa ang mabibigay ng malakas na wavemaker especiallly maliit yung aquarium nya mali din mallit na nga po aquarium nya malakas wavemaker nagstrastruggle yung isda at you can't add sea anemones with that small aquarium altough good news nagmemake na daw sila ng bigger aquarium

1st your salt water aquarium is to small to hold that many fishes. 2nd you do not need a wave maker for a small aquarium because it will create a very strong current both left and right because the distance of the walls are to near. The strong current will weaken your fish and die.

Hi
love birds give me
1st your salt water aquarium is to small to hold that many fishes. 2nd you do not need a wave maker for a small aquarium because it will create a very strong current both left and right because the distance of the walls are to near. The strong current will weaken your fish and die.
