Cartagena (2024) is the second largest city of the region of Murcia in Spain with a major naval basis. The defensive port was already important during the Roman Empire and later in the medieval period against Arab raids. Cartagena was the capital during the Greek-Byzantine Empire of the Iberia peninsula. Some highlights of Cartagena are the Roman Theatre, the Auditorium, the National Museum of Underwater Archeology, the Marina, the defensive walls, the Ruined Cathedral, La Manga del Mar Menor and the City Hall. The city has a population of 220,000 and 410,000 live in the broader metropolitan area known as Campo de Cartagena.
