Carroll Ballard shows off his Eclair Cameflex CM3

Ойын-сауық

A few years ago I had the rare privilege of going to legendary filmmaker Carroll Ballard's house to do a TV news story for KCRA-TV in Sacramento, California, to promote his newest film "Duma." After the interview I asked if, for B-Roll purposes, he would show me his Eclair Cameflex CM3 movie camera, which I his pride and joy. The news story has already been posted on KZread, but I just discovered that I still have the raw footage. This is the unedited footage of Carroll Ballard taking out his Eclair CM3, putting it together and showing it off. This is the same camera that also was used to shoot "The Black Stallion," "Never Cry Wolf" and "Fly Away Home." After I'd finished shooting this he held the camera out to me to hold. It was a great thrill. I have now purchased my own Eclair CM3 and it is a magical camera. Enjoy this rare look at a master filmmaker. For more info please visit mikecarrollfilms.com

Thank you for sharing this! I interviewed Carroll this year about directing The Black Stallion--as timeless today as when it was released 40 years ago. He's a visionary.

Wonderful peek into Mr Ballard's world - his work speaks for itself, and I'm all the more impressed that he's a fan of the CM3. Delightful camera, rock-steady imagery, so simple to use - you can even swap the mags out as you're filming. designed for the French Navy, which is one of the reasons for the 'hot-swappable' mags.Mr Wexler provided me, a total unknown, a photocopy of the Eclair CM3 (16/35 version) based on a single phone call. YEs, film people are great, Eclair ones, even moreso! :)

My camera looks like this one here, but the name is Cameflex 1635. It's for 16mm and 35 mm film format.

Could you tell me what type of motor is used for this camera? It became very interesting ...

Thanks for this video! I've seen another video you produced on the Eclair Camflex as well. I've recently obtained one, and was wondering if you have any idea where Carroll Ballard got the motor for the Eclair he showed you in this video? It looks kind of custom... I spent years working on and with film cameras and have never run across this. Thanks!

Probably some custom made crystal sync motor, I would guess.

You sync the old-fashioned way, with a clapboard. Works just fine because the timing is excellent.
