Carrie Brownstein

Rising to riot grrrl fame with pioneering 90s punk trio Sleater-Kinney, and later gaining a whole legion of new fans as star of comedy sketch show Portlandia, Carrie Brownstein is a one-of-a-kind talent. Recently, she’s applied that talent to memoir-writing. In Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl, Brownstein writes of her turbulent suburban upbringing and of finding her people, and her power, through the feminist punk scene.
Visiting Melbourne on tour with the reformed Sleater-Kinney, Brownstein briefly rests her guitar for a chat with Myf Warhurst. Join the pair for a discussion of defiance, humour and rock and roll.

I rarely watch long interviews, but I was drawn to every word and I’ve never heard the band, I’m just a Portlandia fan. I love her even more. I’m not even a big reader but I want to read her book.

Corin just doesn't have the same appeal as Carrie, does she?

I think Corin is also really cool, she just comes off as more private/a lot less public-facing than Carrie. Carrie acts and has written this memoir, so I feel that she (Carrie) is more open to projecting herself and her life to the public somewhat more than Corin has been, and I don't think that either approach is bad. Carrie and Corin are different, but I think that is part of what makes Sleater-Kinney interesting and cool.
