@18:15 I read a review which suggested that instead having the handle in the middle (between the wheels) when you fold, to fold the bike in half then hang it over the saddle. Obviously it won't be as compact but it locks in a lot more easily. I'm going to do it this way for a while to loosen it then try your method. Very helpful video!

@@Fred-my9er Yeah when I first got the bike the clasp was really hard to connect with the ball and it took a while for it to become looser. Hopefully as you use it with the handlebar on the outside it makes the clasp less tight and it becomes smoother over time.

Really great review of a folder that always gets overlooked. Very much a bike that competes with others way more expensive. Nice.

Great video - was the final decider before purchase. Had it built is store. Staff very helpful and demonstrated folding down and up. Very surprised not to have folding/unfolding guide included (I def couldn't remember everything and if I make a mistake in folding up I could come a cropper!) so contacted Halfords. They sent me a link to this video as the best guide to folding and unfolding. So - well done - you are the official guide :-)

Good review. I’ve had this bike for about a year, really nice bike but I’ve not had a chance to ride it enough. Good tip about the steering column lock, thankfully I’ve never had an issue with it loosening but I’ll be sure to lock it in place now. I also agree that the mud guards should’ve been painted black/dark grey to match the frame.

A very detailed review. Nothing more to ask for. Unfortunately, I scratched my bike as I did not pushed the handle bar near the wheel while folding it. I think that’s the very first thing every intercity owner should be mindful of. 😭

Oh no sorry to hear that. Yes I think they should have put some wrapping or temporary padding on there from the factory which buyers can choose to take off later, as its very easy to scratch while trying to learn how to fold in the beginning.

Just bought this bike last week. Its great 👍. Its light, fast and a pleasure to ride..brakes are safe and responsive..for what you get its a bargain..the handle bars are wide and the end grips so soft rubber making them comfortable and keep your grip secure in the rain..the 8 gears is enough for general commuting around the city as the Cog is larger in size so as to get more distance with each pedal rotation...I will be staying with the folding bikes from now on and at some point will be getting a 16 inch wheel folding bike and perhaps an electric one but would be happy to ride a none electric as they are so light and easy to use...I am surprised at the speed . Its such a pleasure to get around the city...actually I dont use it as a folding bike and having put permanent nut and bolts in place on the bike as I leave it outside work for several hours, I do have a decent lock too, its a Kriptonite extra strong anti drill lock and the steel cannot be sawn into....im happy with my first carrera intercity folding bike 😊

I have that issue with the front end not feeling secure,but after watching your video I know how to remedy that.

It’s cool to see at 25 minutes or so on Lower Thames Street that the guy on the road bike, who looked like a pro (road bike and dressed like a cyclist), didn’t speed off into the distance even though he looked like he was leaving you at the lights a peddling off relatively quick. You were catching him at the next light every time. That’s very reassuring to people that might think that kids sized bikes (I know folding bikes are adult bikes) travel at kids speed, but you were moving at normal bikes speeds and even overtook several bikes.

Cheers....I now need a folding bike so this is very interesting as a few of these are for sale locally....I may go for the disc Carrera but it doesn't come with mudguards... plus I need a more basic used one to start with as it will be on train and bus luggage racks

I bought two of these from Halfords today. No explanation of how to fold and unfold the bike from the staff and the manual is just a generic bicycle manual. This has been so helpful. Thank you so much🙏🏻

Old video, but good information. This bike is offered under many different names, it's important to check every nut and bolt, and the frame and handlebar locks MUST have the security clamp in use at all times.

I got one of these cheap second hand recently and found folding a hassle because you have to angle the brakes/lower the stem and the stem folds to the left so dangles around and gets in the way of the folding mechanism. Can't understand why they didn't make the stem fold to the right like a Brompton where it's out of the way. Anyway, I took an Allan key and unscrewed the stem and mounted it backwards and flipped over the handlebar, now it folds like a Brompton and is much easier to fold quickly without having to alter the height of the stem or the brakes and it stays put and doesn't get in the way when folding. The catch is still far too stiff for me when trying to unfold it, so I might source a strong magnet like they use for door catches to hold the frame together.

These bikes are great value second hand. It's useful to know the stem can actually be switched that way for anyone who prefers it folding to the right. Thanks. Personally, I like it the way it is, as the handlebars and stem are then fixed in between the wheels and it takes less width space. It also results in a more manageable 'cuboid' shape to put inside storage bag or slim interior gaps in the house. But agree, it definitely comes at the cost of more steps to fold it like that. In regard to the catch, the front half of my one (the ball end) had actually wriggled itself loose out of the threaded socket attached to the fork and fallen off somewhere so I had to find a replacement. I took a chance on a magnetic catch originally designed for Dahon bikes but the plate side is actually the same bolt size as the ball head I lost so was able to simply screw that in to the threaded socket. I then took off the black bracket from the rear wheel, and attached the magnet half of the new catch and it works pretty well and is much easier to lock and detach. It's also still strong enough to keep the bike folded when lifting etc. I bought mine off e bay - if you search for keywords "Magnetic Folding Bike Catch Dahon" you'll probably find several examples, if you wanted to have a look.

@@ImOnItLikeJamOnToastI've ordered a magnetic latch off Amazon that looks identical. Also I've seen a seat post stopper with a castor wheel available on there. If I install that, it would lift the rear wheel off the ground slightly letting me leave the handlebars up and roll it using the front wheel balanced against the castor similar to a Brompton in shopping cart mode. I'm basically turning it into a cheap Brompton, I have a Brompton, but I was looking for something with bigger wheels, but all the other folders are just useless heavy lumps when folded and you can't really go shopping with them, but this config might work. Also allows me to leave my Brompton home when it's wet and muddy as the small wheels don't allow much traction in the rain.

That's a good point, this is the one I ordered: www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B09V76BH6T? If it gets in the way I might be able to sand it down, or get a seatpost extender to cover the lost length. I just need it to roll effectively when folded up, as it's just a bother to move around. Brompton are definitely the best bikes for going shopping with, except you definitely need a rack fitted for stability.

Thanks for your nice feedback. I still use the bike now and then for leisure but since getting a job where I can work fully from home about a year ago it doesn't get as much use as before. It does still come in handy for quick trips and for exploring holiday areas when I've taken it in the car. Bike hasn't given me much major things to complain about, only minor things like the rubber handle bar grips have loosened slightly and lost one of the folding clip ends after it fell off somewhere. I did manage to find a replacement solution (magnetic clip) which seems to be far easier to use, so maybe a blessing in disguise! I'll try and do an update video on the bike soon when I get some free time.

Cheers for putting the effort into making this video Thinking of getting the 9 spreed they have at halfrids. You still liking it?

If it's clipped in properly, it's actually very secure in mine and takes a sharp tug to get it open again.

Great review. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Can you share how far up the seat and handlebar can go? From the ground and to their full extend. That would help since I'm 5'11 and really can't figure out if I'm actually too tall for a bike like this.

Would you say this is a good bike for a learner?

I take no chances with the folding handlebars. I bind the catch with electrical tape to make sure it cannot come undone. I have steep hills to navigate on my commute. So peace of mind is essential.

I used to ride there often. I just lived across the river

Good review, I got this bike last week, bicycle newbie and this is my first bike. I got it from halford and while riding my handlebar went to the left side n I nearly stacked it... which was scary, had to take it back to halford and they had to tighten the handlebar..... my middle clamp the bottom which says open n close doesn't work... I just need to clamp n unclamp? Is this the same with yours...

You need to slide the little lock switch on the top of the clamp in the direction of the side that says 'open' with your thumb and hold it while you try to open the clamp. Otherwise the clamp won't open for safety. Look at around the 18:00 mark in the video where I open it. Hope this helps.

OK thanks, I just checked and all the little rock does is slide but it doesn't matter if I slide it or not as clamp can still open

Sorry to hear about your seatpost being stolen. :( The seatpost is 34mm in diameter. The total length is 545mm. But the seatpost narrows at the top where it connects to the saddle, so if you wanted to know how long just the main part is, it is 480mm and the tapered part at top is 65mm. Hope this helps.

Unfortunately I don't know. The "manual" that came with it is next to useless and doesn't have any technical specs listed. Its also hard to physically count the teeth as they are obscured by the double sided chain ring guard.

I wanna get a bike like that and then a Bafang mid range conversion kit (so replace the chainset) but if even the factory wont tell you how many teeth then I might just look elsewhere, although there appears to be a drought on folding bikes in the UK at the moment..

The manual didn't mention anything regarding max weight. But according to halfords website, it is 100 KG max for their folding bikes: "Unless otherwise stated, folding bikes are designed to carry a rider of up to 85kg (13st 5lbs) and up to 15Kg of luggage."

I'm 14st or just over....

I got this bike a few days ago. I managed to fold it by watching this video, but when I unfolded the bike the front wheel wouldn't move. I dont know much about bikes I'm not sure if it's something to do with the brakes?

It could be the brakes - have a look near the brake pads (black rubber) and see if they're touching the silver wheel rim, you can jiggle the black arms of the brakes a bit side to side to re-centre them so the rubber isn't touching. Other things to check is to see if the mud guard hasnt somehow bent and trapping the tyre, or if there is some obstruction in the wheel spokes.

It comes assembled, but if buying in box, the gears and brakes may not be tuned or perfectly set up so that would be something you'd need to look at getting adjusted if the gear changes are not smooth or brakes are scraping. Both are fairly easy to do at home if you look up tutorial videos on these subjects. In regard to learning how to ride, a folding bike probably wouldnt be my first choice to learn as the steering can be 'twitchy' on these bikes where the fork and stem are tall and the wheels are small. By this I mean, the steering has more tendency to turn by itself if you're not constantly holding the handlebar and correcting course. On a normal bike, the front wheel is easier to keep pointing straight ahead. Once you've got the hang of riding, a folding bike would be no problem after that but as a learner it might be a lot more to take in, on top of trying to learn how to balance your weight etc.

@@attilayeung3208 I would say a hybrid bike is better as they tend to be lighter than mountain bikes, but there are also some light mountain bikes too so best to check the weight when buying. An important thing when learning and for comfort, is to make sure the bike is the right size for you, you are not stretching/bending too far to hold the handlebars and you can easily touch the ground with your toes. There are many good brands and options. On the budget end, I heard good things about the Triban, Rockrider, and Riverside models from Decathlon. From Halfords, the Carerra Subway Hybrid models have good components and reputation. There are more expensive brands like Giant and Specialized but I don't have much experience with those but they seem to be very popular, I see a lot of people riding those names.

I would recommend this bike if the ability to fold it is a vital requirement as it does come at a cost. It is nippy to ride for journeys less than around 4-5 miles, but I find it tiring/uncomfortable for journeys longer than that due to the smaller wheels, it does feel less efficient than a 26" or 700C wheel bike. If you don't need a folding bike, then a full size rigid bike is faster and more comfortable for commuting. It is great for situations where I want to quickly go somewhere and take the bike in with me (I take it to supermarkets and put it in the trolley or roll it folded for quick purchases, for going into local off-site work locations, to the barbers and put it folded inside the shop, put in the car boot and explore the surrounding areas etc).

How far of a commute would you go on this bike? I have a 7 mile journey to work. I do have a hybrid bike, but i want a bike i can take into the office with me and not leave outside. Also take into the flat when I get home, but just deciding whether or not a folding bike would be comfortable and quick enough to do the 7 miles in a reasonable time.

The average single journey I do on this bike is between 2-4 miles (so 4-8 miles return). Its great for quick trips but anything above 5 miles can feel like a slog depending on the route. For example, 5 miles on flat smooth cycle lanes isn't actually bad, but if mixed with gravel, pebbled/ bricked roads, inclines etc would make a big difference to comfort. Although the occasional long journey has been fine, I personally would not find this to be as comfortable as a larger wheel bike (I also have 29inch hybrid) for doing it daily above 5 mile each way on mixed terrain. The small wheels and folding body doesn't absorb bumps as well as a standard bike, and although nippy its not as efficient. Then again I'm still using the stock saddle which can get sore on these kinds of routes so maybe a better saddle could help.
