Side by side view of the Top Of The World video from the Carpenters first tv special in 1976 AND the special one Richard did for Japanese fans around Christmas of 1996. ( Often called the "Magic" Top Of The World". Done in 1996 with lots of rotoscoping, green screen, computer graphics and image warping. There is a woman actress in the background when Richard is introducing the video, dressed as Karen. Not bad for the time period.
Side-by-side view for comparison viewing. I enhanced the 1996 video, as the quality was very bad. The 1996 video is on the left of screen, the 1976 video is on the right.

INTERESTING
The first deep fake (of Richard, not Karen). Why did he think it was necessary to update his hair style? Is it that he's trying to recreate the moment in some kind of magical way? I just don't see that it adds anything to the performance.

Who is the actress dressed as Karen? Surely she doesn’t look Japanese. I wish there was behind the scenes footage of the making of the special.

I have never been able to find out anything about her other than she was an actress, but no mention of whether she was Japanese. She looks too short even from a distance. Guess they thought it didn't matter. Yes...a behind the scenes would be fascinating , or an interview of Richard describing the making of this video.

@@caleguillory5451 ...I believe they tried to have the actress "dance" like Karen, but in the tv special and the original video, she is sitting down with Richard as the music starts, then stands up to sing. I think they just had the actress kind of "swaying" in the background as Richard talked, just to have the image of a perceived Karen there.

Well, the look in Richard’s eyes as he heads for the piano made me think that he and the Karen look-alike performed live and then the actress was digitally replaced with archived footage of the real Karen during post-production.
