Sad that she struggled for years unneccesarily and took things till her heart quit. She doesn't look right here, three years into her anerexia. If only she could gotten proper help mentally and with the nutrition needs of the body. A few extra pounds is no big deal.

@@robertcarlsonrobert5846 I was 20 (1981) when an article appeared in the Boston Globe. Mass General had identified this eating disorder that had become rampant among girls...and they had opened a clinic. My college roommate was skin and bones; ate and binged - (would run the shower to cover the sound of her retching) and took laxatives and diet pills. She was obsessed with food in a way that was abnormal. Could devour a doz donuts in a couple of hours and puke them up. People stared at her in public. Our other roommate and I read the article in silence and shock. It took a couple of years, but she was treated at MGH and recovered.

The late great Karen Carpenter with that fantastic voice. Unlike today's so-called "singers", who all try to out-scream each other, Karen's wonderfully mellow tones could beat them all. How the music world is poorer without her. R.I.P Karen ❤

It's so hard to believe that it will be 41 years on February 1st, that the world lost this Beautiful angel. Karen died from complications of Anorexia nervosa. Her death brought this eating disorder into the spotlight and may have saved many lives in doing so. She will never be forgotten. Her voice, as evidenced here by this live performance was truly spectacular. Rest well, dear Karen. Gone, but most certainly not forgotten. As a footnote, Karen was just 27 when this was filmed. She was 32 when She died.

@@catnip824 Yes. KC had begun to develop anorexia about 1975, and the effects were very visible by the time the famous video of her drumming in concert in London was shot the following year. Also, with this Tonight Show appearance being from 1978, Richard will have been having medical trouble of his own, having become hooked on painkillers following minor surgery. He would take most of 1979 off, and that year Karen would record her abortive solo album. Richard, to his great credit, kicked the addiction that was menacing him, but Carpenters would never again be the juggernaut they were in the early 70s...

"Ya get one shot at it", says Karen, with a slight chuckle...knowing she almost never needed more than that. Superstar, which they perform here, is a prime example. The lead vocal on Carpenters' hit single recording of that Leon Russell classic is not just a first take, but the first time Karen ever sang the song. She was a marvel... Davidson's offhand remark about "the rest of their lives" is unintentionally mordant, isn't it.

Karen and Richard Carpenter always had great musicians backing them - Tony Peluso on electric guitar, Bob Messenger on stand-up bass and flute, Cubby O'Brien on drums, etc.!

I don't hear any electric guitar in the first gig. I wonder where the sound went...

@@NKomarov The guitar was running direct but definitely had issues in their first song. It cleared up in the medley. What I found most impressive was the drummer had only overhead and kick drum mics to balance with the rest of the band. Cubby O'Brien really had to pound to cut through all of the trons. A lot of raw energy and super tight; they sounded / played like a real road band.

Never heard of Cubby O'Brien. The dude can play, and I imagine Karen had high standards. She was a terrific drummer herself.@@fr0103

Do you happen to know the name of the blonde guy on the far right doing backing vocals and tambourine? Thank you.

Karen Carpenter was so uniquely cool and she just never knew it. So sad she compared herself to so many others that she could not take good care of herself! She was above them all. Hope she is in Heaven feeling loved.
