CARPENTERS but Out of Context Is Classical

Ойын-сауық

You're watching the legacy of the Carpenters compiled in a random arrangement of clips. Completely out of context! I scoured this site trying to find random clips and skits I could use for this video. It took me 3-4 weeks to compile and edit all the media together, it was an arduous and exhausting task. A long duration of about 44 minutes of compiling various bits of clips and arranging them randomly, but all of that was worth it since no one has ever really done a Carpenters compilation before (in a video/clips type of compilation) at least to the best of my knowledge. I just wanted to make this video because it makes me happy, and it would be something that Carpenters fans alike would appreciate too. If it makes you happy watching this, then I think that's awesome too!

What an amazing actress Karen Carpenter was! I feel sorry for her because she never had the opportunity she deserved in Hollywood.

Karen should have had her own tv variety show! Not only did she have the world's most beautiful voice, she was a multi- talented natural goofball! It was said by her band mates that she mesmerized audiences so that they couldn't take their eyes off of her. Fuddyduddy Richard later admitted that their tv specials should have starred Karen by herself. Karen was born to be a star, but was denied the love and support that she generously gave to her family, friends and fans. Karen was a dream girl! We still love you karen, you beautiful soul. I hope that she's in heaven sitting behind a drum kit and playing for the true love and children she so longed for.

Karen was a natural actress; when the cameras rolled, she lit up like a firefly, relaxed, and took charge. Natural, God-given talent at play. She had a sense of play, too. All qualities of a great actress. It was her secret sauce in singing, too. She came in in a full emotional state for each song, had subtext in each word, sung clearly, went through the beats of the story to the epilog moment by moment, and held her audience in the palm of her hand.

I can agree with most of what you say but I don't see how you can call Richard a fuddy-duddy nor have I ever heard him say that about their shows. Lots of people, like you, seem to feel that Karen was the whole act, or at least the lion's share of it, but that's not true at all and is an ignorant, and willfully at that, point of view. Amongst many factors, you don't want to treat a band member like a sideman. Doing that removes the emotional reward for that person. Why should Richard invest as much effort as he did in the act if he is going to be sidelined? If he doesn't shine as brightly as Karen on camera or on stage, affirmative action needs to see that he gets his share of the spotlight. Otherwise it's going to cease to be fun for him, he'll lose interest, and that will be the end of the act. You can see that in full glory with George Harrison, and his lack of interest is one of the reasons The Beatles ended.

@@TheLarryBrown Richard never matured as a songwriter or performer. He had Carpenters doing schmaltzy nonsense even when disco and rock took over. Beachwood 45789? C'mon, he was a fuddy-duddy and helped kill their careers.

This clip serves as a reminder that: 1. (Karen) was not only one of the finest female singers who ever lived, but was an excellent drummer and had a made-for-TV personality. Had she lived on, she may have had the opportunity to sing in a Broadway production or a movie musical. She may have recorded several (if stronger) solo albums and recorded hit movie themes, among many other pursuits. 2. Musical genius (Richard) could have moved on to the arena of scoring films and television movies. Or gone on to produce music projects for artists outside of his work with Karen. Perhaps he would have continued writing original material with folks like Paul Williams and John Bettis and recording his own albums of jazz or classical music. After pursuing their individual interests, the two could have met back up now and again for an occasional "new album," or appear together in TV specials and events. Later on (perhaps in their 50's or 60's,) they could have teamed up for a long and successful Vegas residency like Donny & Marie Osmond did in recent years. We are also reminded that time ran out for them in 1983. Karen's many personal issues were too great for her to overcome. This was two fold: The lack of proper treatment at the time. And her very unrealistic idea of simultaneously participating in such treatment while continuing life-threatening behaviors. I have always contended that once the taping of their 1978 "A Christmas Portrait" TV special wrapped, they both should have agreed right then and there: "Ok, everything needs to stop for a little while. No recording, no touring, no TV appearances etc. etc." That was the defining time frame to begin recharging. To get rest and seek treatment...to be treated over a long period. The world would have waited a few more years for Karen to put out an impressive solo LP and for the duo to release their next album as a team. Their following was well established by this point. There was no rush. But in 1979, while Richard was in treatment for an addiction to quaaludes, Karen, known for her nervous energy and restlessness, refused to remain idle. At a cost of nearly a half-million dollars, most of which was Karen's own money, the solo effort fell flat to the ears of her record company family, who said "we just don't hear a hit in any of these songs." Without its release, and thus, no accompanying tour, this was another opportunity to stop, reassess and get some help for her growing eating disorder. Alas, once the solo album was shelved, it was "Let's get back to work, work, work!" That decision proved the beginning of the end. In every video from 1980 forward, Karen, whose voice remained unwavering and beautiful, is smiling for the camera but appears exhausted and rail-thin. She is seen singing and dancing to recordings that should have been postponed to a later date. Richard and others are quoted as saying "Karen was in no condition to record a solo album" (1979.) She was in no better, but rather worse condition in April the next year (1980) to tape what would become their final TV special "Music, Music, Music" for ABC. Even with padded clothing and heavy makeup, Karen appeared to have lost even more weight and was tired-eyed. At this time, her once "marvelous brown eyes" as her brother once described, were hollow and with very little life left in them. Following a very short engagement, she entered into a marriage that would later prove ill-fated. The following year (1981) was spent recording their reunion album, "Made In America," which was followed by a tireless promotional campaign in both North and South America. In late 1981, they flew to Japan to promote it there as well. By now, Karen looked skeletal and lacking any vitality, as if she would physically shut down at any moment. The following year (1982) Karen made the decision to face her issues by boldly moving, temporarily, to New York where she would finally commit to treatment. She chose a self-styled therapist located far away from family dynamics and her more familiar and comfortable L.A. surroundings. We now know that this was mostly an attempt to quiet the nagging of friends and family -- "to get them off my back," she confided to a friend. Because anorexia and bulimia were little-known disorders at the time, proper treatment was, to say the least, limited. Her therapist's treatment style was met with great trepidation by the family and others, but Karen was committed to stay the course with him. Unfortunately, even the best efforts would have proved futile. After years of compulsive dieting, periods of starvation and half-eaten meals followed by the excessive use of laxative formulas, her body's chemistry had been knocked greatly off-course. Additionally, as evidenced by her autopsy report, there appeared to have been a prolonged use of a product called syrup of ipecac. The syrup, which is only recommended for life-saving expectoration, was tearing away at her heart muscle as well as doing untold damage to its aorta. The irreparable damage was already done. Karen confided on a few occasions that she had struggled emotionally with regard to her mother. She feared she would not live to see them share a healthy and loving relationship. She always felt that Mrs. Carpenter favored Richard, regardless of Karen’s many accomplishments. And despite Karen’s own affection and attention toward her mother. After a visit the evening before her death she made the decision to stay at her parents' home before going shopping with her mother and friends the following day. Her parents kept rooms for both Richard and Karen should they ever stay the night. Before turning in, she had a lengthy telephone conversation with a longtime friend, during which she complained of feeling very “heavy and tired” in her chest. However, when the friend quizzed her about it she quickly brushed it off, blaming it on “a long day.” The following morning there was evidence that Karen was alert and energetic enough to start the coffee pot for her parents before returning upstairs to get dressed. When Karen didn’t answer the call to join her parents for coffee, Mrs. Carpenter went up to check on her. Ironically, it was her mother who discovered Karen lying face down and motionless in the walk-in closet. It was her mother who screamed for the emergency services to be called while struggling to reawaken her daughter. When paramedics arrived they only detect a slight pulse every 10 seconds. She was rushed to the hospital where medical professionals worked for nearly an hour to revive her, to no avail. When the doctor announced to the family in the waiting room that Karen had passed, it was her mother who repeatedly asked the doctor, “Are you sure she's gone? Are you sure you can't bring her back?"

Karen was obviously more comfortable doing sketch comedy than Richard. Richard whenever he had to appear in a skit just couldn't relax, whereas Karen, by contrast, seemed to enjoy letting the goofy underside of her personality come through on TV variety shows!

Karen should have had a solo career starting in the late 1970s. Richard could have continued to produce, but his song choices on many of their later albums were career-killing decisions. Yes, yes, Richard's arranging. I'd like to hear Richard arrange a Kim Carnes album and see how well it does. MEANWHILE, Karen Carpenter had one of the greatest voices ever that was silenced too soon because of her quest for love from her mother and the stranglehold Richard had over her career. Richard killing her solo album destroyed her spirit. I don't doubt that.

I made this video because I always thought, as a Carpenters fan such as myself, I would love to see random Carpenters clips in one video, where most of the clips were just them talking and talking instead of going into a full on music video/song. I want to share their funny side and the comedic antics in their legacy, that's why I made this video. I saw you made a video on what made Karen Carpenter a great singer, I'll make sure to watch that later on! Thank you dude!❤😌.

I recall reading somewhere many years ago that when John Wayne wanted Karen to appear in his film, "True Grit"(1969), she wanted to be in that movie but the producrers of the film said no. The producers of the film didn't want her for that movie - the role eventially went to actress Kim Darby - because she had no acting experience at that time! Kim Darby played the character "Miri" in 1966 in the Star Trek first season classic episode, "Miri".

@bradwatson1048. On the contrary, if Karen Carpenter had been signed to play the role in "True Grit"(1969) that eventually went to Kim Darby, that experience would have wetted Karen's appetite to branch out and explore other projects which would have at least reduced the arduous, exhausting concert touring and music recording schedule she had as part of The Carpenters and as a result, she may have never developed the horrible eating disorder that plagued her life and led to her untimely, premature death! Had she had a movie career, she would have gotten out from under her unloving mother and perfectionist brother's overbearing control!
