I've got a project in mind and currently I only have simple tools to do it with I'm looking at putting a square hole through a 2 × 6 And cutting a 4 × 4 down to a true cut 3 × 3 or smaller if necessary

It obvious you have never done any carpentry. Marking the waste avoids making mistakes. Any decent joiner/carpenter always marks the waste.

@@franklunt8975 Wrong! For marking for studs or rafters, etc. Yes. For trimming off a small piece that obviously is being thrown away, No! Try again, Jr.
