My doctor gave me a carotid ultrasound and said I had barely detectable thickening and should take aspirin. Can someone tell me what thickening this refers to? Is it plaque within the arterial wall, in which case, if it is really small I would not be worried, or plaque that is pushing into the artery, maybe something like 1.5 mm wide, which would be worrisome?

Asprin is a blood thinner ,so maybe your blood had a high viscosity that could lead to clotting.

@@rozhan17 Yes, aspirin is a blood thinner, which is why doctors tell older people to take it. That's all there is to it. My doctor doesn't know anything about the viscosity of my blood. If soft, inflamed plaque in the artery wall breaks through the wall and reacts with the blood, it could cause a clot which could lead to stroke, heart attack or death. Aspirin might or might not prevent the clot from forming, but aspirin today is regarded as too dangerous for primary prevention of heart attacks and strokes.
