Carole King on Letterman, August 26, 1982
Carole King's complete first appearance on Late Night, first with her performance of "Locomotion/One Fine Day," then a three-segment chat with Dave, a performance of "Read Between the Lines" and finally, in her last segment, "It's a War." Backing her are, I think, Robert McEntee and Eric Johnson (guitars), and Richard Hardy (saxophone).

A world where King is Queen.
She is one heck of a songwriter. She wrote so many timeless standards it’s absolutely unreal.
She has always put a smile on my face. Her humility and gentle way is so honest. Such a treat to watch this. A very gracious David letterman.
One of my first albums "Tapestry" I bought when I was 10 years old. I have been a fan ever since. The woman puts a lot of soul into her writing and playing and singing. This performance still sounds great and look how many years it's been. Timeless!!

So fucking amazing how much talent she has. What a kick ass woman.
One of the greatest songwriters of her generation. She was writing songs as a teenager.
Magnificent performer and humanist. One hit after another. Dave appropriately gives her 20 full minutes.
hard to believe this was 39 years ago! where has time gone too
Carole King - talent beyond imagination! This magnificent musician/song writer has entertained and inspired generations.
She could write any style of song then perform it in her unique way. One of the all-time greats!

RIP Gerry Goffin. Two of the most prolific songwriters that shaped our lives. Hats off Carole........
If you want to truly enjoy her amazing voice “So Far Away” and “It’s Too Late” are must listens. She hits some amazing notes.

I love this woman! Such a great voice and songwriting.
I have been a fan of Carole King since my parents would listen to her music back in the 70s. She's one of my all time favorites. Her lyrics are simple, but say so much. I got to meet her in person in pizza restaurant parking lot when she was stumping for John Kerry in 2004. She seemed just as nice as I thought she would be. Beautiful and talented woman.

@@iandowney4630 You are actually incorrect. She wrote the lyrics to a lot of her songs. Her earlier songs were co-written with Goffin, but many of her amazing popular songs, like You've Got a Friend and I Feel The Earth Move, were written entirely by her. In fact, most of the songs on her seminal album Tapestry, were written entirely by her. I also love many of her other albums after Tapestry, and most of those songs were written by her, though many were also collaborations with other lyricists. I actually don't like some of the earlier pop songs, like Locomotion.
Rare tv appearance by one of the most prolific American singer songwriters in history. The first album I ever purchased as a child was “Tapestry,” and it’s still one of my favorites to this day. Saw “Beautiful” on Broadway and it brought back so many sweet memories. Thank you Carole for influencing me and my musical career. Your music is legendary.

No doubt a legend. We didn't even know she wrote some of those songs!
I am amazed how many other artists covered her songs and scored #1 hits and gold records. Definitely a big part of the soundtrack of my life.
I love her music and that sincere smile that bares her soul as a beautiful human being. That’s the first impression I get.
I love Carole King!! Of course she’s a gifted/talented genius and she’s attractive too , but she’s also nice down to earth lady!!!
Carole is the KING of pop! She's the #1 female pop star of all time, as far as successful songs written.

Just got back from overseas and discharged from the military. Enrolled in college and her tapestry album came out. What great music. When I hear the songs, I remember being back in the "world" and being around American girls again.
This is soooooo 1982. I lived in the states. Leg warmers and headbands. 1982. 1982. A great time actually and a solid album.

She is and always has been such a wonderful, beautiful soul. Her talents can't be questioned, and the artists she wrote for back when she was a teenager, incredible. Mozoltov
Once upon a time boys and girls, performers on television didn't lipsync or use autotune.
What a treat! Thanks for sharing this.
I had forgotten The Locomotion. So glad I stumbled blindingly over this. KZread apparently knows what I'll like to see/hear! 😊
Totally. When I work in the cubs and do covers, I don't often do female artists, but Carol is an exception. There's no boundaries to the way she writes, it's identifiable to all.
Thanks so much for posting this
When I tell you I am obsessed with this video.
Back in 1995 I met Little Eva, who also sang 'Locomotion', at a Doo Wop concert. I will say that Little Eva wasn't little.
Tapestry and Music I wore both if those albums out. Sooooo good.
I am Happy l bought two Tapestry Albums, one to play , and one to save for Collectible reasons. This just so Talented Lady, We saw her in Concert at Mohegan Sun, my Husband and l a short time before l lost him to the big C. He loved Carol King we were big Fans. Thanks Carol.
Thanks for posting this. While I don't care for the final tune, even here her talent -perhaps matched only by her seeming lack of pretense- is undeniable.
I have listening to Carol King since 1973 Tapestry album.
Wow!! Beautifully done ❤❤
I had the pleasure to meet Carole at a few sound-checks when she toured with James Taylor a number of years ago. Her catalog is extensive and watching her at the sound-checks I saw how hard she works to make them perfect. I love so many artists but I think Carole is at a rarified level with Paul McCartney and I’d be hard pressed to add others to that list.
Unbelievable, stellar, immense talent.
I thought I'd seen just about every episode of Late Night w/ Dave back in the day, but I must've missed this one . What a Treat !! Many thanks for posting !!

That’s Steve Jordan, Letterman’s drummer back then and played on Briefcase Full of Blues, the Blues Brothers’ first album and mega-hit.
Recall many years ago, I'm 71, when I started to listen and purchase 45 RPM recordings of many of the hits they were playing on AM radio back in the late 50's and early 60's...I was always looking on the record who wrote the song. And time after time no matter if it was the A side or B side..Goffin-King was listed as the songs composer/s. It was either Leiber-Stoller or Carol and her husband Gerry on it seems 65 % of all my 45's:-)
