OMG. How do they get such a primeval, shrieking sound out of CARDBOARD BOXES? Really cool.

Why do so many modern pieces start with one note?

Because the idea of developing music out of near silence is a very popular idea in modern classical music, its a way of resistance to the directness and obviousness that one can hear in older classical music or also in pop music, where the exact opposite can observed: Due to spotify and other developments intros are getting out of fashion and more and more the first few seconds have to present the interesting hook line, because that is necessary in the "war" of attention attraction. But - you are right: It's a kind of cliche.

@@MSchultheis Correct. One of my composition teachers once said (we were talking about clichés in contemporary music) , that there was a time when you could make a bet with the listener next to you, whether the second note is a semitone above or below the first...;-))

I think because the music is an exploration of the inner world of a sound; instead of combining multiple sounds, the process is to split up, and discover a world within a single sound.

Also, it can be to avoid traditional tonality.
