Sammy and Carol 's sketch was brilliant. Both are pure class. The subject isn't funny, but they did their best to showcase the issue of racism in a comedic way.

The sad part is that people like this woman do exist. I myself encountered a cashier once who was stupid and racist like Mrs. Wheatley.

Yes I agree especially when she describes themselves as Liberal . Mistake in the writing or exposing facts relative to past witch is disguised presently. I watched these shows as a child and enjoyed them very much. Now Tim Conway is my favorite.

She just plain didn't get it. All those little 'things' that would drop out of her sentences. And she just plain never got it at all. But he sure did. He liked her, respected her, but he knew that even now she would never consider him an equal, just a friend. The skit was funny but sad at the same time. Both did a brilliant job. Hats off to both!

The Sammy Davis Jr. skit is one of my best also. It stayed with me for all these decades since seeing it as a teenager. It was well written, well acted, while touching upon race relations and bigotry in this country. The best part, at the end when he says Good Bless you too Mrs Whitley. There was no animus or ill will, just a deep understanding of how some people are racist without knowing they are. It’s what they have learned and live. Still relevant today in 2020.

If you grew up under that stuff - you expect things to stay the same .When you run into resistance to how you were raised, you'll get offended - like Carol's character was. I still run into old (and baby boomer bigots who grew up under the JIM CROW system of the South- who hate the way things are now )all the time. Then you have their children - who deny their racist beliefs, but will not date nor marry anyone of another race . I understand their view ,for they don't want their family to have race problems. They have been raised to believe a certain way - and are afraid to change - to the point of defending what they believe, quite violently.

No surprise to see Davis in that skit- I mean, he WAS the man that kissed Archie Bunker! All In The Family was on almost the same years as Carol's show (started in 68) and was the real ice breaker for racism. I can't believe she picked a tedious skit like the orphan. I would rather have seen The Dentist to show what magic there was with Conway/Korman. Then again, it was good to see Bernadette Peter's talent. Thanks for the post.

The Shirley Temple sketch was an exact rehash of a sketch with Dick Van Dyke when he was a guest on The Carol Burnett Show in the 70s.
