    If you remove the name Carnegie Mellon from the title and replace it with Stanford, Columbia, Chicago, Yale, UC Berkeley or Caltech, your arguments on why they are overrated may still be valid.

    Wish I had seen a video like this around college application time… the school you go to doesn’t matter nearly as much as the work you decide to put in

    the school you go to definitely matters to a degree, especially if youre in Finance. i know for a fact that the networking & funding opportunities at more "elite" schools are 999999x better than the ones at my shitty school. And dont get me started on scholarship-opportunities..

    @@natesamadhi33 who do you believe is more likely to get the high paying job fresh out of college... Mit graduate or a graduate from unknown small town university? People that graduate from mid to top tier schools start off with so many top tier opportunities and those experiences continue to benefit them throughout their career

    @@nellatl Right, people who never went to these top schools love to claim "it doesnt matter", but if youre a hiring manager and you see an applicant that went to Princeton, there's a subconscious weight to that; you automatically associate the elite reputation of Princeton to this applicant--ESPECIALLY if you (the manager) went to Princeton too. The alumni connections that so many CEOs and managers have with elite schools is insane. Thats why i cant wait to transfer out of the college im at now, because everyone knows its garbage lol. Our career counselors have no connections whatsoever.

    You make a good point! The tech industry is pretty fair when it comes to recruiting, skills and ability are more important than where you graduate from. But schools do matter when we talk about the training of soft skills, your network, and the opportunities

    yay! Tech seems a lot more merit based, although school likely does play a decent factor in getting past the resume screen and in certainly matters in the areas you mentioned above

    The points you mentioned about are probably the cons of CMU, but I would say there are many other reasons that make CMU the best CS university, like academic achievement, resource available for each students, etc. It would be better to includes more aspects to support your conclusion and make it more convincing

    Just to give you a perspective of student from an average state school. Many people struggle to even get past the screening even with 200+ applications.

    I am applying to colleges right now, and find myself questioning my entire life. I am going into engineering (biomed or electronic) and wonder if it is the same for my major. I am coming from a competitive school, and am morally exhausted of always trying to climb to the top, of competing with the best out of the best… I am not sure that I want to keep doing things in college. My question is does this apply only to cs, or engineering as well? Thank you so much!

    your reasons then would apply to all top private (or even OOS public) institutions for any CS degree, not only carnegie mellon. Besides, companies actively seek out students from carnegie mellon, it is a huge boost if you want to get those top jobs at top companies.

    i got accepted to CMU but I went to an instate state college instead (Georgia Tech).. I went for almost free, and CMU wouldve been 60k a year, so like a quarter million in debt.. It is not worth it at all .. haha im glad i made a wise financial decision

  • @narenmani07
    @narenmani076 ай бұрын

    This is so right! I think carnegie mellon should be removed from the title and you should just put these T20 compsci schools in general. Almost all of them fall under the same reasons.

    Salary data doesn't mean much if you don't control for geographic location. $100k in the SF Bay Area is poverty wages. $100k in Mississippi is beau coup bucks.

    You have to look closely at where these high paying jobs are. Cost of living is staggering in the regions where these high salaries are paid. High salaries are great but need to be looked at with deeper perspective.

    If you're not talking about how many years you're taught by grad students, the analysis is incomplete. On this metric, I wouldn't put Harvard and Berkeley in the same bin as CMU and Stanford. When students pay a lot of money, some will raise a real fuss if they're being taught by grad students all the way up through ML. So that steep tuition bill does mean something--the school has to do things to justify it. Reification with median starting salary needs to be qualified with how many dropped out of their intended major or learned more about the current state of the art, and that will partly depend on exposure to experts who've been in the biz for decades with insight and experience to share and practiced explanations of the advanced material.

    Other colleges will teach you exactly the same thing for way less money..... In my 40 years of being in IT, not once have I looked at what school someone has came from. I only care if they know how to do the work.

    Class of 2018 ECE here. I don't think you have any business in commenting on CMU's overall appeal considering you're an IS Major lmao. For CS and ECE, the quality of learning is still top notch. IS has minimal overlap beyond foundational courses. You are grossly underestimating the advantage CMU and other top tier schools give to help land interviews. 3 big tech offers with minimal effort when I was graduating (didn't take em though). Those statistics on comp are also questionable. I never even reported my final offer to the career center. Many people don't, and you are also not considering total comp. I currently go to Chicago Booth rn, and can tell you a top engg. school with an M7 MBA will separate you on all degrees as long as you put the work in and don't slack off. The salty folks who didn't get into top schools likely loved this video. Stay foolish
