@@STREETMACHINETV They are pretty amazing engines! Smoothest V8 I've ever come across & smoother than even most inline 6's (when they are firing in the right sequence that is! 😀)

The important thing is that we all learn together
Watching this with headphones on was a bad idea when that thing backfired... cleanup on aisle 12! Glad to hear you've since got sorted, can't wait to find out what the issue was!
Always love the honesty Scotty. Showing the mistakes (and the journey) is how we learn. It's what makes your builds and series so relateable. Glad to read in the comments your sorted out the running issue. Love the build.
No need to make excuses, when youre trying something yourself for the first time. Heck, that how we learn what not to do the next time. Given the fact you dont hide ur mistakes and show us the process of trying to fix, is what I love about Carnage. ❤❤
These unexpectet pops and bangs, that nearly make you shit your pants are always funny for everyone around 😂
Great video Scotty, at least you don't hide your mistakes with fancy editing. It makes us other mortals more human. I don't know of any build where everything goes right. The main thing is that you're attempting something that the rest of us wouldn't have thought of, & that's worth a beer or 3!
Love your work Scotty and team. Living the Aussie dream
The last bit, the running issue reminds me of a backward dizzy, glad you show us the hassles as well as the triumphs, you'll get it Scotty we have faith in you 👍
"a journey of discovery" This is every car build, great to hear you got it running sweet now mate. I love this car!
Drama drama drama... There's so much drama in our lives these days. If there's an opportunity to kill some drama then I'm very grateful to be involved. Thanks Scotty! Now I think I'm ready to hear that Lexcen ROAR!!
Scotty’s great adventures Love that you just keep chipping away at it all Looking forward to seeing the next episode
Great video thank you for updating us ❤ Keep on Thrashing 👍
That aluminium lump sits back nice and low in the engine bay, should handle quite well for an old wagon Scotty, love your left of centre builds dude
V8, 4 cylinder, great to see continued learning , bit like the old days✌
Awesome episode Scotty, love the honesty in all your trials and tribulations in the builds.
This is a straight throw back to when I fired up my 1uz swapped car. Initially I was on stock ecu and one of the ignition drivers failed. I then dove head first into my first ever wire up of a link ecu and all the sensor fixings. Sent to fire that up, it ran better but still not right - my power distribution for my Injectors teed off before each rail, one of the tees had pulled out of the crimp!! I was feeling your pain mate! I'm sure you'll get it sorted, if not already!

Oh Scotty, I nearly shat at those backfires at the end haha - I hope you find the issue soon mate, don’t give up
The Button plan cars: Original car: Nissan Pintara - Badge car Ford Corsair Original car: Toyota Corolla - Badge car: GM Holden Nova (note: the Nova was once based on the Nissan Pulsar prior) Original car: Toyota Camry - Badge car: GM Holden Apollo Original car: Ford Falcon Ute - Badge car: Nissan ute (complete with the old 4.1L OHV carby / 3-speed auto) Original car: GM Holden Commodore - Badge car: Toyota Lexcen (what Scotty is reengineering in this video) There were other deals in place like GM Holden and Isuzu / Suzuki, Ford and Mazda (Lazer/Telstar/Courier which for Mazda was 323, 626 and BT50) buy they were in place well before Button plan. There was even advanced plans for the Mitshibishi Sigma return built by Ford Australia based on the EA Falcon but with the Mitshibishi "ASTRON II" 4cyl but that never happened, there were some designs shown over the years but I don't think there ever was any prototypes made. There was also some other deals like engine castings with Nissan and GM Holden doing engine blocks for other brands. In short the Button plan was a total wank fest of crap, about the only good cars to come from it were the Lexcen and the Apollo and the non Button badge cars the Ford Lazer and Telstar were pretty decent, the last gen Telstra TX5 with the 2.5L V6 / 5-speed manual and 4WS were pretty nice back in the day.

@@Low760 - yeah well thats why we are all pissed at no more Falcon, Commodore, Magna/380 and even the Pulsar (which ended local production in 1992). what killed the local market was the end of import taxes and opening up the market to everyone else.. that said would Australia be better off with locally made Everest / Ranger - Commodore (which was supposed to survived until 2022) and Colorado??? At least we sort of have the main players doing LHD to HD conversions even f they are not strictly 100% factory converted but supported and with very little government money also.

You forgot: Original car: Nissan Patrol Y60 - Badge car: Ford Maverick I remember a mate of mine that bought a Nissan XFN Ute & the only reason why he bought it was than Nissan had a 2 year warranty to Ford's 1 year/20,000km warranty. Everyone took the piss at him but that warranty worked for him in the end! Yeah, The Button Plan was a shit show but car makers across the globe are still doing badge engineering today. Who would have thought that the 2023 Ford Ranger would be the VW Amacock..... Sorry, Amarok.

@@1969Risky - But the Amarok and BT50 and Colorado (back when GMH were doing them) are simply not Badge cars, oaky maybe the current BT50 is the closest to Badge car there is but Amarok at least has its own design language for exterior and interior, would it be nice if it had its own engine? yes but look at the economics of it, never was gonna happen. You are right I forgot the Nissan Patrol / Ford Maverick, I would also say that was one of the better badge cars over that period.

It is a really good idea to retain factory fuel pump operation as in , key in run position, pump runs for 3 seconds , shuts off then waits for a tach signal to reactivate the pump only during cranking / engine running. In a post crash situation where the fuel system is leaking, keeping the pump running is a bad idea.
This is quite entertaining 👍
Really good info for an old head Scotty, cheers mate
its funny that you talk about the ground thinking it was the problem, i actually had that problem on an LS engine from crushing the back ground cable on the head when refitting the head. took me alittle bit to work out what the issue was 🤣
Farqummme he said, with a mudslide behind his leg... somethins not right there...🤣🤣🤣
I still love this car, such a cool idea and being a wagz makes it even better :)
Good to see that you are showing all the dramas I'll be looking forward to next episode to see it going... Im having 3 guesses before the next episode did you put the coil wires ass about or timing belt not on right or not enough earth on it that should be all soldered the starter clicking is a sign of a bad earth
I reckon you might have had a surprise visit from Vicpol CIRT if you had kept up the back fires much longer! Especially with the way some are behaving in Melbourne lately. Really enjoying this build and the info you are passing on Scotty!

I love that it's a Toyota but not a Toyota running a Toyota engine. Back in the day, I had my Soarer tuned with a PS2000. It never ran right, always misfired if I got it boosting. Took it back and they adjusted the dwell timing or so they said, but I suspect something happened to that coil when the car was being setup.

Most Toyota engines run in batch fire they fire 2 cylinders at once so it may bank off 4 coils and fire 1-8....2-7...3-6...4-5.. I had the same issue when firing my 1jz with a Microtech ecu the first time just a idea mate looks awesome tho good work ..

Scotty, you're in fuel save mode - cylinder deactivation!
@STREETMACHINETV

haha, if only it was so simple
This is why I am not a fan of Haltech - the coil outputs and the difficulty in getting a base map. A Holley EFI system poops on these from a simple setup point of view. Most engines fire up immediately after putting in the basics and many of these run reasonably well with the out of box tune.
Sometimes it's easier/cheaper for newbies to buy an ecu that's already loaded with a map. Link have 1UZfe maps. Personal preference.
Time to buy a decent crimper mate

If it was easy, everyone would do it. I've had plenty of practice with all of this, usually repairing an ecu after it kills itself and then wiring it up, pin by pin to bench test. Not many boards can be repaired these days though, things got real small and multilayered.

Hey mate, out of curiosity; rather than going through and unplugging each injector and coil to avoid this; can you just connect the ECU to the laptop with the main loom disconnected from the vehicle, giving the ECU a separate 12v supply? You should also rename this video "We fire up the V4 Lexcen for the first time" to be truly accurate. Also mate, I've got access to the wiring manuals to these things, you're probably past that now, but you can hit me up and I'll be able to help you out.
