When I heard Hendrix as a kid I knew there was something special about his tone he's playing his effects, that he was the best to my tastes . Then I heard Tommy, same deal. to me they are equals to their genius. My two favorite guitar players, if I had to add another one it would be Jeff Beck, because he plays with such personality, he make's the guitar talk/sing, and uses his whammy bar like no other

Yeah, his Deep Purple 1975 album was epic and heavily overlooked. I have Bolin's album with Billy Cobham "Spectrum" and it's a masterpiece

@@bumpyroad3251 yep, was so terrible that the jeff beck concert he was opening never called for an ambulance all night until it was clearly too late the next morning. Was the roadies that made that call sadly. Was going to see him for that tour. 😪

I saw Tommy at Winterland in SF. He was so nodded out that at one point there were two guys walking him around on the stage, each holding him up by an armpit. Then they went offstage and that was the end of his set. This was in '76. He opened for Marriot, followed by Trower. I've seen the Trower set here on YT if anyone is interested.

1976 was a terrible year in Tommy’s life. Whether with Purple or solo there were some pretty bad shows. Even some that I heard where people said he was great, weren’t really, if you’re honest. We all heard Tommy at his best and 1976 was not that!

I remember an interview where Jon Lord said that if they had known how much of a drug addict Tommy was, they would have never brought him into Deep Purple.

@@TheJohnnyCotts That’s rich considering how Deep Pirples crew and management supplied the band with road cases full of coke and any pills they wanted. Coverdale and Hughes both have stated that on video interviews. Every band member was into drugs snd booze to a certain extent. Bolin would have lived a lot longer if he didn’t join Purple where he became hopelessly addicted to opioids provided by their crew and his so called minders who worked for Purple

  • @Wheelio

@@TheJohnnyCotts I think another large issue was that Glenn Hughes was basically "drug buddies" with Tommy Bolin and encouraged the behavior. Who knows if Bolin straightens up or not if Hughes and his own drug addictions weren't in Deep Purple at the time.

Tommy from what I understand beside being an amazing guitarist and one of my all time favorites was a great guy that had a serious addiction problem that ultimately took his life...is that what you mean...and Mr.Appice is fortunate to have lived to his ripe old age this can happen to anyone..Too bad more people did not try to help the guy

I was hitch hiking out of northwest Georgia near the Tennessee border heading home to NY in 1980 early summer and he and his girlfriend picked me up in a powder blue mustang heading back from Florida I thought they said, I was holding a cardboard sign that read NY unless it was someone else from the Vanilla Fudge. I was 18 years old and grateful to get a ride all the way to near the NY/Pa border.
