John, as a previous employee of JRA/Rover Australia/ BMW/PGA and ultimately Ford, I really enjoy your frequent summations of the Automotive industry in Australia. I have no loyalty to the brands I previously worked with. One company that did impress me was KIA, I did some consultancy work with them for about 8 years, and saw their products improve out of sight. My involvement with the FCAI made me well aware of those manufacturers who had something to hide. 😏

Most of the slump in sales are attributed to the inability of car companies to supply stock. I certainly would not order anything with a waiting list over 4 weeks.

Interestingly while Subaru sales dropped from 52k in 2017 to 36k in 2022, it's ranking among car brands actually went up from 10th to 8th. Perhaps supply was a bigger issue for some of the brands in 2022. For those who drive for comfort and practicality rather than thrill and passion, there is nothing wrong with CVTs. However Subaru does need to do something about improving their hybrid system which provides next to no fuel savings.

I would love to hear some growth statistics within the companies that are doing well. Would also be interested to hear more breakdown between Ute vs passenger cars sales.
I bought a Leaf for my wife a couple of years ago and can honestly say its an excellent car and she loves it. It cost about half the price for a Hyundai, KIA or Tesla so for me that was cash in the bank! It is comfortable, has what I feel is a decent range for a 40KW battery (285km). My wife uses it for her daily commute 40km each way and she recharges as necessary in our garage over night using cheap off peak electricity. It may not be as fast as a Tesla or as well equipped as the latest EV's, but for everyday driving it does the job and costs about $6 a time to recharge.

As one of your token Pommie bastard viewers, getting my fix of Dingo Piss creek automotive news, I just wanted to comment on how good John's sound quality is. Hear me out, as I had the unfortunate "pleasure" if living in Australia for a while, and I can confirm that the relentless hissing in the background of this fine reportage output from John's esteemed organ is a testament to the quality of his audio production; nothing is more authentically Australian than the sound of swarms of cicada. Thank you John as always for your fine reporting on the state of the motor industry in Oz, as well as your dedication to upholding a higher level of journalistic integrity than nearly anyone else in the motor journalism market. With that said, being a complaining Pom, I feel obliged to complain about something, and so let me take this opportunity to discharge my duty (that being the obligation for me to complain in writing to you about something entirely unreasonable for me to complain about) by bringing to your attention that following one of your recent videos on the Blessed and Sanctified Elon (the Profit (sp) of the Electric "Baby" Jesus) and his not so long range, point to point, lets hope we don't have to make any detours, potato crisp haulage 100% green machine, cheaper than a train, faster than a plane, with fanboys "all got smartiestest brain" (you get the point) ... that I sat down late at night with my worst Australian accent and remade the famous VB ad voice over, which I sent to you by email, and you know what, I didn't even get a "nice one" or a "gidday" or even a "ouz it hangin" or nuffin.mate. This is extremely upsetting, as I must have spent at least 10 whole minutes doing it for your entertainment and the entertainment of everyone else at autoexpert.com.dingopisscreek (opportunity to put the card in the corner) or whatever the website is where you can get new cars at favourably negotiated prices (assuming that the you refers to a Bloke or Shelia living in 'stralia). If you are going to be so rude as to not even message me back when I sent you a (arguably not very) funny then I am just going to just have to write you a long comment instead for you to be able to read out in a silly voice instead. Oh, and finally, an observation on this video. Can I suggest that whilst the overall decrease in VW group sales can be reasonably attributed to their reprehensible criminal commercial tactics which have been oft the topic of discussion, the decrease in the Audi brand might well be a sign of a downturn in commercial criminal activity; It is a well known fact that the only people who drive Audi are drug dealers in the UK.

In case anyone is wondering about Skoda sales. The scene is a Skoda dealership where 5 lonely sales people remain seated at their desks as I walk around and sit in a Skoda Superb Wagon. 15 mins in and still no one rises from their desks and then when fiddling with the A/C a knob falls to the floor. Two weeks later I find myself in a Mazda dealership. 😊

I think Skoda occupy the space that SAAB used to occupy. That is bought by people who think they are so cool/different/unique/intelligent that they cannot even bring themselves to own a mainstream Euro brand, they absolutely must own the most unique/quirkiest/unknown Euro brand (despite knowing it is a rebadged VW), just to show the world that they refuse to follow the pack. In other words, car hipsters. Would amaze me if they continue to be sold in Oz as the world moves to EV's, and it certainly sounds like dealers don't really care much about the brand. I predict a future similar to Saab's. Wise choice with the Mazda BTW.

Also sad about Subaru, though it seems to be at least as much an Aussie/NZ-local problem as the parent company. CVT means no Forester XT, no WRX STI, etc? Well, they have them in the USA, and have had for three years. I sadly sold a 1997 Grandwagon 2.5 10-speed (same tranny as usually found in Forester), which I loved, in early 2019 when I was moving to a job in the USA. I got a 2.5 CVT Outback Touring there, which was a really nice car. Not big on the acceleration, but this matters not at all in the land where everything is either a freeway or else 55 mph with double yellows and no passing lanes. Or an actual city street. The cornering turn-in and body roll was worse than any Subaru I've driven in NZ, but spending about $80 on an OEM WRX rear sway bar fixed that. Back in NZ in May 2020 (oh how plans changed) and I got a 2008 Outback 2.5xt "Eyesight". 265 HP STI engine, 5 speed conventional automatic, I/S/S# modes, paddle shifters, dynamic cruise control, lane departure warning, pre-collision warning/braking (depending on whether cruise control is on or off). The FastR app says it does 0-60 in 5.0 seconds (way better than the new 2.4xt CVTs, which don't launch well). All this for NZ$10k in excellent condition with 86500 km on it. I've since put another trouble-free 45600 on. Over Christmas I had a couple of tanks of fuel (95) that managed 8.24 l/100 km(752 km range), and 8.31 l/100km, which I'm more than happy with. The overall average, with short trips, city driving, towing from time to time, is 9.2 l/100km. I can probably use this car for ten more years while waiting for Subaru to find the passion again.

@@AutoExpertJC... sorry John but I call bullsh*t on your response to David's valid comment. I believe his point related to supply constraints, for someone who loves facts and science you've missed this very important point rather badly. For example, whilst sales/deliveries for VW fell by -24% in CY22, demand/enquiries for VW cars "may" have been up 25%, but the issue was that VW in Wolfsburg simply could not supply enough vehicles to meet demand in Australia and maybe they prioritised parts and cars to other brands (e.g. Porsche +27%) and markets/countries in order to meet their fudiciary responsibility to shareholders (maximise ROI)... maybe? You can not sell what you don't have (or at least you should't), I believe "wait times" from some models was pushing 12 months? Maybe a better metric for your report would have been to measure demand somehow, starting with how many Austrlains wanted/considered buying a new car in 2022 but did not or could not? How else do you explain the high demand in the used car market? 18 year search data (not sales) from Google Trends indicates which brands are trending upwards (Australian consumer searches) and which are not. Thanks for your great work, but I reckon on this report you looked at high level numbers in isolation and did not consider external (enviromental) factors impacting the overall market adequately enough... So when a once in a one hundred year event occurs (pandemic), who can predict that, and who can predict which (part) supply chains will be impacted and to what degree? Sorry, I just think that JC, in this instance, is manipulating the data and the facts a fair bit to make a representation that’s a bit misleading, so I call bullsh*t on this YT video.

@@nicholasavram3433 It wasn't their fault in 2020 and 2021 - but it's now 2023. Other carmakers have gotten their houses largely in order (except the Hyundai N-variants) - Toyota, on the other hand, has enormous wait times for many models, still. If everybody has the problem, then it's not the automaker's fault. If just Toyota has the problem (at least to that extreme degree), then yes, it's Toyota's problem.

@@itlivesin Well that saying is older than oldest Fiat factory in Poland. I cant tell for sure where it originates from but probably from soviet era when Fiat sold a license for Fiat 125 to be manufactured by polish FSO factory. Fiat 125 was already 20 years old when that licence was sold and FSO manufactured it for next 20 years. Up until 1989 Poland was under USSR influence and Polish government was just russian puppet government. FSO factory was government owned so nobody would pay any attention to quality and giving best they can for factory owned by occupant. When we regained independence in 1989 lost in 1939, things started to change and now in fact polish workers are very dedicated and proud of their work.
Genuine question that I might have missed, was there an overall drop in sales from 2017 to 2022? I’d be fascinated to know which brands are out performing or under performing the trend. If the whole market is down say 7% in 2022 (made up figure), but carmaker X is only down 4% then they are out performing the overall market by 3%. I suspect that it will only make the top (bottom) ten look worse though.

I'm an unashamedly 'old school' Aussie where cars are concerned. My first car was a 1978 Ford Falcon V8 XC Rally Pack (lime green with gold mag wheels and black and gold pinstripes), and with the exception of a Jaguar XJS V12 (gorgeous looking and great fun to drive but "electrically challenging" with its "Prince of Darkness" Lucas electrics), I've always owned an Aussie V8. "Ford man" originally, I switched my allegiance to Holden with my VEII 6 litre SS back in 2010; current drive is a 6.2 LS3 motor VFII SSv Redline. I love my Aussie V8's and lament the day that Ford and Holden ceased production in 'Straya - I reckon we'll live to regret this one day in the not too distant future in this uncertain world. My beautiful "Black Prince" Redline is 6.5 years old now, it's worth more than I paid for it and practically I know I should update my daily drive soon (let's face it, these old V8's are dinosaurs now) , but have no idea what to replace it with. There is absolutely nothing currently available that I like. Decisions! Decisions!

John, I'm very disappointed in the Nord VPN App. The countries that it would be advantageous for me to set it to run from, run so slow I can't use the booking sites. The only country it doesn't throttle my internet speed back by 20% or more, is our closest neighbour. It also is not compatible with the version of Outlook I have a licence for. To be able to send emails I have to shut the Nord App down.
My Xtrail faux WD 2.0l sheetbox is still going strong 11 years (apart from CD changer), while underpowered had massive family friendly storage capacity bought for $25k was best value 2WD Wagon on market at the time it moved design wise towards its RAV4 competitor it lost market share as it had nothing to positivity distinguish it from its competitors.
Thanks

Honda's stock price in January 2000 was 1845 yen. Now in January it is 2023 3123 yen. Not sure how that tracks with regard to inflation but it is definitely higher. And yes they had a peak before the GFC that is well above what it is now. Do Honda just make that many small engines that they don't care about cars anymore? I have no financial expert but the company seems still to be profitable.

I can't speak for Australia, but here in Canada the Ford dealers in my area essentially had zero inventory. The lots are slowly filling up again, but there is no doubt that in my area sales must have been down significantly. The dealers of many brands were lining the front row with used vehicles of any brand they could get their hands on. Just to keep the staff employed. What few vehicles they did get they often gouged on the price. I think it's too early to judge which brands are in decline and which are winning. There is no doubt Tesla took advantage of their competitors' supply chain issues and the oil supply disruptions. Now, they are slashing prices significantly to compete. It will be 2024 before the distribution channels are fully stuffed again, then we will see what the consumer demand really is once the virus related issues have passed and consumers have the power of choice again. A friend in New Zealand wanted to rent a car for 5 weeks recently and he couldn't do it. They have so little inventory that they would only rent at the per day rate, not the monthly rate, because they would lose so many daily rate rentals. They can't get cars.

I feel your sentiment for Toyota in general but compared to many other shitshows carmakers stage nowadays there is a small glimpse of light there. Akio Toyoda seems like a good guy with his petrol head right up there. He and his then partner in crime Naruse went all "fuck the beige-ness", founded Gazoo Racing because they were not allowed to use the holy Toyota moniker and raced their heads out of the Nordschleife. This passionate Collaboration gave us the great LFA and the spirited FT86.Naruse sadly passed in a road crash but at least doing what he was best at, Toyoda is up leading the brand and Gazoo Racing has taken over all important motorsport outings. Along with that we have got the incredible GR Yaris, GR Corolla, GR86 and the GR Z4 Coupe. This is quite a swing back to the roots and all models are just gems. So here i am, hailing a behemoth of the automobile industy, but Akio Toyoda seems to at least be one of the dying breed of petrol heads in a leading position in this industry.
This is what happens when you put bean counters in charge of the decision making at a product level.
