Can you please unpin the pinned message and pin me instead? I'm from norway 🇳🇴 and my birthday is on the same day as Magnus, so this is my argument for my question. If you don't do it, I'm going to write an essay about the pinned comment and ask chatGPT to make millions on my essay and evolve my my villain arc while I laugh uncontrollable with a deep voice while I mix vegan meat with regular meat.

It is much harder getting to 2800 playing mostly 2700+ players rather than 2650 players. No disrespect, but this could be one reason why Erigaisi is going up rather than Pragg or Gukesh, who mostly play elite players and gain a few rating points only.

  • @epicchess2021

It actually works the other way round, very hard to do it via open tournaments because one slip up (loss or even a draw against a much weaker player and your rating plummets hard, flipside is you have to really grind your way up slowly due to weaker opponents all the time as you get higher and higher rated Edit: at least that is my understanding anyway, happy to stand corrected! A lot of people were talking about this though when Alireza was farming tournaments end of last year to make the Candidates. Leinier also tried it but failed and hence shows how tough it can be in Opens to grind higher and higher when you're already highly rated. One final note, I also remember Alireza doing this 2021 and crossing 2800 truly historic and special!

@@epicchess2021 high time Erigaisi got invited to elite tournaments. The problem is, there are too many elite Indians now so not all can be invited. This is just like Indian students in India who wish to study medicine - far too many good students, far too few places available. Happens when you country’s population is 1.3 B or something like that. If Erigaisi gets to 2800, even Magnus might give him a call.

@@epicchess2021 Its going to be different for every player. Some play-styles are just more suited to farming lower rated players. Alireza made 2800 in open tournaments but has somewhat struggled against the top top players.. at least struggled enough for his rating to dip back down since joining the elite. Arjun might be similar. Some players will find open tournaments tougher, though. Hans is actually a good example because he's a confidence player and has consistency issues. He will usually have 1 or 2 bad games in every tournament he plays. In top tournaments being inconsistent doesn't actually hurt him that much, no one is expected to win 10 games in a row in top tournaments, drawing or losing 2 games doesn't matter if you're also beating or drawing Magnus an Alireza on your good days.. But for an open tournament you almost are expected to win them all and like i said, Hans will struggle to do that just because of how hot an cold he can be
