The history of the ceremonial move is largely unknown. It seems to be done for publicity much like the ceremonial baseball pitch, the first recorded ceremonial chess move was around 1960.

That's not it... Despite what you read on the internet, in most tournaments players don't actually decide what opening to play until they are actually at the board. They are fully prepared to play any number of openings, but deciding which one to play often just comes down to how they are feeling at the moment.

@@yai4486 I severely disagree on "chess is about traditions", it has pretty much no traditions. Maybe it HAD traditions, but those times are long gone. Chess is very commercial and gen z-ish now, which is good, time goes on and things evolve. Also, you don't need to comment on my age.

@@nitenuc2341 Chess is stuffed to the brim with traditions. You may not recognize them, but that doesn't mean they don't exist. If you go to a park and see a player alone at a board waiting for an opponent, that's tradition. When you sit down and they ask for your rating, that's a tradition -- you may not recognize it and just tell them, but that's not their intention. It's banter, it's trash-talking, they are trying to get an advantage before the game even begins, as per tradition. If you ever want to a chess club they probably didn't start by teaching you what you need to understand modern chess, openings, pawn structure, statics, or dynamics. They start by teaching you basic opposition, the lucena position, and shows you the games of anderssen, morphy and the immortals --the opera games of the world. You go through the famous tournaments of the past, nuremberg 1896, paris 1900, and Gothenburg 1955.
